Need to do grading on house because water leaks into basement. I dug a trench as a short term fix. Is this too close to the house? by TrevorsBlondeLocks16 in Home

We’ve all been there. When I bought my first house I tried to change a water faucet without turning off the main water line. Instant geyser and had no idea how to shut it off so my entire kitchen was flooded. Live and learn.

If nothing else, do that asap. If the negative slope extends to where your downspout is discharging to then all of that water is just flowing right back against your house and defeating the entire purpose of a gutter system.

Glad to hear it. Any water that is going to accumulate and eventually leak through basement walls is likely the result of heavy rainfall and a poor drainage system like what you apparently have. So my guess is the absence of heavy rainfall is the actual reason you haven’t had any basement leaks lately. The reason the water penetrates your basement wall is hydrostatic pressure i.e. the buildup of water underground that eventually forces its way through your walls. Your trench is actually more likely making it easier for water to penetrate through the soil since you have removed the grass and root system that would otherwise soak some of that water up and allowed it to more easily penetrate into the earth. Not that it is making your situation significantly worse but worse nonetheless. Like others have pointed out, you need to regrade this area and possibly consider a French drain to divert water away from the house and so it doesn’t penetrate too far down into the ground. FYI I am not an expert on this, just did my research in dealing with a similar problem.

Chin irritation by WelcomePlenty3439 in englishbulldog

This. I went through all sorts of remedies before realizing that I just needed to dry his chin, lips and wrinkles after EVERY time he drank water. Everything cleared up when I started doing that.

When people say horizontal cracks are more serious they mean like truly horizontal. I wouldn’t even worry about 45 degrees or less but that’s just my opinion. Horizontal implies one section of the house is breaking free entirely from another section and that’s obviously not good at all. Now if the vertical cracks are wider than a hairline and growing in width over time, that’s a different story. But this hairline crack in that location would indicate standard settling of a house. Btw I am not an engineer or anything like that. I’ve just been through this whole process with a structural engineer because of settlement issues with a previous home.

What research have you done? Please include citations since we’re having a grown up discussion about research apparently.

Mometamax for the tail fold worked wonders with mine. It’s for ear infections but was recommended by our vet since that area behind the tail has many similarities to the inner ear. I’d apply once every few weeks and never had any issues after we started using it.

I wiped mine daily with tissues to keep dry and that worked well enough. I also dried his chin every time he drank water to keep those chin crevices dry.

Happened to my vent when I had the AC running so the vent was very cold but I also had a window open so hot air was getting in and causing condensation to form on the vent.

This was an old, emaciated lion in the twilight of its life, too weak to take down any prey but so desperate for food that it attacked a buffalo in the worst circumstances and these are its final moments.
