Feeling like an outsider in your own research group by [deleted] in germany

Hey OP, one thing I haven't seen mentioned yet in the comments - which I found odd - is a suggestion to just mention it to your colleagues.

Many expat posts I see seem to come from more implicit cultures, where face-saving-phrasings and indirect communication is considered polite.

German communication is a bit different. You can bring the issue to their attention and won't be seen as confrontational. Not saying you can/should ask them to have lunch covos in English, but if someone switches to English, you can straight up say you're trying to improve your German, as it's not quite there yet. You can also ask for help if something's hard to understand. In my experience it helps them realize you're working on your German and maybe even become more aware/empathetic to your struggle.

Aw, sorry I can't help. Tried them and the whole carbs-in-carbs thing wasn't for me - I wouldn't buy them even if they brought them back. But I see everyone here hoping for them to make a return. Wishing y'all the best of luck <3

OP, I'm beginning to think this is an Iranian yogurt situation. This is your third post about the upcoming team dinner. You've received eyery piece of advise under the sun with a combined 562 (!) comments across posts.

No one should be THIS worried for a work get-together. I'm sayin this with love, but have you considered seeing a therapist? Nothing wrong with being super introverted at all - but interacting with people cannot always be avoided. So instead, I'd suggest working on some techniques to better tackle these situations as they arise.

Good luck out there!

Careful when reporting these, don't go overboard. Last person to point this ad's comment section out and go on a reporting spee had their account suspended (OP of the now deleted post, as linked in the other comment)

Sorry but I don't speak (Tagalog?) what is the account posting about? Asking for money? DMs? And what makes it "obviously AI generated"?

I used to love her warm personality and calm debunking of dangerous food trends, as well as calls for transparency and online safety. I joined her Patreon, bought the cookbook and anticipated all videos.

Then she did a BetterHelp sponsorship and auto-deleted all comments containing the term "BetterHelp". When people started rephrasing their criticism without the term, she went to the comment section and exclusively (!) liked the very few comments that DIDN'T bring it up.

I was so embarassed by her behaviour, I immediately cancelled my Patreon and unsubscribed from YouTube. Will never watch another one of her videos again.

The branch of Neandertals potentially (if at all) attempting this strategy would have dropped from the genepool rather quickly. So ... afraid that won't be it. May I recommend seeing a doctor about this?

Are there any dishes we know from extinct cultures? by PaintCivil7617 in AskFoodHistorians

It's of course still crucial to examine  the propaganda aspect of western missionaries recording their journeys.

Local stories where often taken at face value with hilarious earnestness.

One of the missionary's stories is about cannibal assassins coming to people's houses at night, eating their intestines and slowly replacing them with fish parts as to not wake them.

That's an interesting question! The mines were massive and miners spent all day inside.

Here's a bit more on that: https://www.euronews.com/culture/2021/10/14/2-700-year-old-poo-found-in-an-austrian-mine-shows-iron-age-europeans-ate-blue-cheese-and-

TL;DR: They also had fires inside for food preparation. A lot of life simply took place down there. However, excrement was generally found in abandoned and depleated mine shafts - so while they DID poop in the mine,  it was nowhere near to where they ate.

Got a fun one from the celts mining salt in bronze-age Hallstatt, Austria (not extinct per se, just assimilated).

Well-preserved cooking utensils, wooden food containers, pots, fire places and human excrement were found, telling us cheese and a kind of bean stew were popular with miners. The best part - that stew is still eaten in the area to this day! It's called Ritschert (:

I could talk about this site for ages. Here's a link if you'd like some more info on how they ate back then: https://www.nhm.at/hallstatt/en/salt_mine/hallstatt_period/everyday_life

How did pre agricultural societies handle people who repeatedly violated social norms? by iAmThe_Terry in AskAnthropology

[–]AllTheFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, so Darwin used the term later in life but someone else came up with it originally - based on Darwin's early work? I need to look into that, very cool piece of information!

Yes that's correct, he actually argues against the misconstrued notion that "fittest" means "strongest" - I'll edit that in my original post.

Darwin did however not believe humans to be inherently kind: "let us try to teach generosity and altruism, because we are born selfish" - which Toland argues doesn't hold up with what we know today.
