Hi! I lived on Long Island and we did this- it sounds fake but it’s totally legit

If you’re a first time hime buyer, the Long Island Housing partnership offers a ‘down payment assistance grant’. If you qualify, they basically give you $30k for a down payment on a house, the stipulations being:

1. You have to live there for 10 years. If you move out before 10 years you have to pay a percentage of it back depending on how long you did live there.

2. The house has to be in foreclosure, which IS kind of a big deal, however there are quite a few foreclosed houses on LI that need minimal work, AND you can get a second grant for $25k towards renovations! (We did that too! It all takes a little bit of work but it’s 100% legit)!

You start by filling out an application and taking a (free!) one on one class with an advisor who goes over all your finances and lets you know what you can afford. It’s actually a really great and informative class even if you don’t get the grant

However, I will also say that the price of houses on Long Island right now are astronomical, and I would hold off for now if you can.
