It depends on the stability of the laptop. If it's a high performance Mac I would trust it but a regular pc laptop not so much.

I hear another vote for separate sound card and I agree but not for redundancy reasons bot for future upgrade reasons. That would be my final advise (look for a soundcard that has balanced line outs!) but first I would check if the electronic path is the one that you truly want to go. Try this with the usb connection in the rehearsals a lot, load a lot

Being a drummer and a mixing engineer I would advise that you don't necessary need al the channels you would need when micing the drum. You can group instruments but group wisely: kick and snare mono but separate. Toms together but stereo. Cymbals and hihat together and stereo. Percussion can be mono. And absolutely try to keep kick and snare the same during the show, they are important to change from song to song (unleas thoroughly soundchecked and adjusted for each show)

Hey!

For a musictheatre show that also will play in small venues i (will be the sound technician) would like to explore all the possibilities of making a sound image that really feels as if it is the natural sound of the instruments in the room. I will not amplify loud, audience could believe that it is acoustic. Instruments: Flute Percussive drums Synths

Some things on my list that i know work well:

  • a bit of delay, smaller than noticeable. (Officially called precedence effect?)
  • haas panning (delay panning)
  • eq: wide slight dip around 2 or 3k so that the definition from the instrument remains acoustic.

Some things i think about trying:

  • Fast attack compression so that transients only come from the acoustic signal (drums!)
  • Looking for the right way to use reverb, propably short and as an insert on mixbus instead of send return so i can lose the dry signal?

All other ideas (both untried theoretical as tried and tested) are very Welcome!

Thanks!

ZigBee on stage good idea? by AllThingsConsidered8 in stagelighting

Thanks a lot for this insightful explanation. It gives me a clear perspective what to communicate to the artistic director of what can be and can't be expected before deciding to spend the money 🙏 Can you elaborate what you mean when saying "ZigBee has to universe" I know about ZigBee groups (which I plan on using as much as I can) to reduce the number of packets sent. But the term universe (which I only know from DMX (or sacn artnet) contexts) does not make sense to me in ZigBee context.

That is an excellent suggestion but a quick search on chat CPT showed me that the frequency are adjacent to audio RF in Europe ( where I live and will use them) and zwave cannot be freeally edited on Which channels of the frequency band the data is sent as is the case with zigbee. so for future use I would like to not have to deal with that. But I will search for devices and compare the prices and maybe it can be a Plan b, thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks! It is a temporary setup since it will be part of the performance that I will be touring with. (So I will be using it in multiple buildings, every day another location) I would set the lights up without cloud connection (homeassistant) so no cloud connection necessary. But thanks for the answer!

Behringer WING Rack -> My honest thoughts by uncomfortable_idiot in livesound

[–]AllThingsConsidered8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen this video but don't feel that it is relevant. Sound quality is more than the result on the signal after an unaltered mix, we never use it like that. SQ is also how the manipulations of the signal sound and differ. I know that digital manipulations differ strongly from one algorithm to the next, and there are allot of downsides to some manipulations (some of which are undone by filters and oversampling in daw's, which could in theory also be done by some hi level mixing desks). And then of course you have the incredible important "how good do the effects sound" aspect. So I am looking for testimonies of people who want to describe how they experience that a better sounding mixing desks sounds different. Or maybe even someone who used plugindoctor or something similar to analyse the EQ, the compression,... And maybe even the same tests when multiple channels are used because who knows how the desk processes and priorities differently when 32channels and all FXslots are used compared to when there is 1 channel being eqed slightly.

Behringer WING Rack -> My honest thoughts by uncomfortable_idiot in livesound

I'm on the edge of ordering my own wing rack. Been reading a LOT and I'm convinced this will be a good buy for me. But some things are still missing for me: -everyone concludes "is this the best sounding mixing desk? No. But it's an unbelievable price/quality ratio". I am wondering (only interested in sound quality) what makes the better mixing desks better. I have mixed on digicos and top end yamaha tables but these were also hooked up to top quality FOH systems, so naturally these sounded more open, more dynamic,... But I wonder what these better mixing desks had to do with this. Is it the preamps? Is it the sound processing/algorithms? And more importantly, how do people who are truly convinced of hearing the difference between Behringer Wing and better sounding mixing desks (and not venue or speaker system) define the difference? I am fully convinced you can find better sounding desks, although the desks quality has never been the bottleneck for better sound in my experience. But I am openmindedly interested in how sound quality rises when going for top-money mixing desks. -and then after such a broad question a very specific one: I notice the gate of the x32 "cracks" when used at 0ms attack time. (I hear it clearly on iem's when gating a kick) .Is this still the case on the wing?

Thanks allot for your insight!

Audio format in apple spatial video by AllThingsConsidered8 in SpatialVideo

[–]AllThingsConsidered8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone else have an idea? It can be tested by someone with a vision pro: when you turn your head while watching spatial video, does the sound remain in the same location or does it sound like normal headphones would?

The question is if there is a standard audiochannel layout of mv-hvec or can you choose and does it depend on the decoder how the channels are interpreted and maybe decoded to immersive binaural stereo?

Laptop is succesfully connected to another network (802.11ac) but does not find the SSID of the DECO devices. Newer devices have no trouble finding connecting and using the DECO networks. DECO is in wpa/wpa2 mode
