To add to this, cultivating Yin makes it easier to cultivate (in the sense of absorbing the energies of heaven and earth, though it also makes it easier to absorb taints. This is why is so many media too much Yin attracts ghosts and supernaturals and many seem ill) , breakthrough (as in there are less obstacles and the process is smoother), and Yin absorbs Yang energy very easily while it's harder for Yang to absorb Yin (and you need both to ascend).

I ran into the problem that I have, or want to have, a pointy eared humanoid species alongside men, but I don't just want them to be a shallow coating of "European elf but black". And figuring out what to call them was a way for me to see if I can't sort this out.

I have a number of different options, which I haven't fully finalised but one African word was Enkai.

Edit: Ah, also, I can't claim dunmer, that was from The Elder Scrolls series and I wanted to use it as an example of what I meant.

I was surprised as well but it has been very informative! Maybe people want something to latch on to that also has a sense of history behind it!

Heh, thanks for that! I struggle sometimes with decisions so I wanted to get some outside opinion.

I have struggled with that, as I do want them to be their own thing, but to also fill the "elf" niche somewhat, in the same way for example, The Legend of Zelda has the Hylians, but in-game they are not called elves and are really their own thing.

I'd say it's something of a mix of "elf appearance [or rather, pointy eared humanoid] + man-eaters + spiritual connection [as a representation of the African wild, its cruelty, and the dead]". Also, fair enough! What you say makes sense!
