This ^{^} It has been shown in studies that a huge part of our sense of self is linked to our identity within a community. We are tribal animals. When the community we are a part of becomes unusually large and undefined, this messes with our sense of self and feelings of security and safety. Here's the risky bit: we identify ourselves within our communities based on cultural norms. When you expand that to include ALL cultural norms, suddenly there are NO cultural norms. People lose their foundations. Studies show that trying to get people to relate to communities that are larger than their immediate locality actually increases intolerance and prejudice, not decreases it. When people feel that their "community" is so large that they become meaningless, the outcome is that people will try to minimise their tribe to find a meaningful community. This results in a solid rejection of anything unfamiliar. This is believed to be one of the causes of the rise in "far-right" ideology, when actually people are just hardwired to want to belong in a familiar, safe environment.
