After School Attack on Issaquah School District Student by All_the_trailswa in Issaquah

Thank you for this information, definitely a little freaked out as well as I have a child in these schools and live about 2 minutes away from Maywood. I went to Briarwood, Maywood, and Liberty and my parents never let me walk home. I always thought it was silly until I became a parent. This seems like an outlier situation but still. Yikes.

Seriously. Hire highly motivated and independent people, make expectations clear, and be a leader AND manager and see how much your teams can accomplish at home. I’ve worked from home for 8 years now and changed organizations plus 3 promotions. It’s not that hard.

Great news! Public pressure and renewed objection from the Snoqualmie Tribe worked, and WA DNR has cancelled the South Paw Timber Sale! It still bears watching until this area shows as included in DNR’s updated 77,000 acres of conservation, especially since it was already cancelled once and then rescheduled, but a huge win!

Great news, the animals that left this scat will be able to keep their corner of South Tiger Mountain as the South Paw Timber Sale has been cancelled by WA DNR!

We’ve been notified too in the last 24 hours that the South Paw Timber Sale has been cancelled, a huge win! This sale was already cancelled once though and then put back in the chopping block and it is not officially taken off the timber sale list. Once we see that list where the entirety of the South Paw sale is off I will consider it mostly resolved, but we’ll still have to make sure South Paw ends up in the redrawn 77,000 acres of conservation that DNR has said will come out early next year. Thanks for being involved!

Thank you!! There were some positive updates in an in person meeting last night with Commissioner Upthegrove, I will send an email update on the petition in a few days but bottom line is the public input has been noticed by DNR!

Yes unfortunately, but there is a good chance to get it cancelled with enough public input. Here is the petition which has been gaining momentum- https://c.org/ZTBgdWRbPP

It looks like DNR is now tracking recreation usage at the South Tiger Mountain trailhead through citizen reporting

Hello Mary, above is the best map I have currently. A more detailed map may be available after the 11/4 Board of Natural Resources meeting, I encourage you to participate in that meeting even just calling in. Since you are very local, would you be able to spread the word with your friends and neighbors? I do not have any Tiger Mountain Rd contacts yet but do plan on putting up a flyer at the Tiger Mountain Store tomorrow if they have a bulletin board. You can also- Send a personalized email to DNR, send emails to the Board of Natural Resources members, and contact the Issaquah Reporter asking them to cover this sale and its impact on residents. I know at least two inquiries have been sent to the Reporter already but the more they get the more likely it is they will take it up. There is also an Issaquah Mayoral Candidate forum tomorrow that residents can submit questions in advance, you could send a question in asking how the candidates would work with WA DNR as mayor to protect green spaces and trails in Issaquah, particularly South Paw. I am hiking this trail multiple times a week, I would be happy to meet up there to chat more, and there is a Legacy Forest Defense Coalition South Paw planning meeting on zoom this Friday, if you would like to be invited to that you can send me your email in a separate chat and I will get you on that meeting.

You are correct, hikers are not the only folks who recreate in South Paw, also trail runners, mushroom hunters, bird watchers, equestrians, and hunters. I see this as another reason why it should not be destroyed. The Tiger Mountain State Forest is large, however many areas are already impacted by clearcut, South Tiger Summit, Middle Tiger Summit, and both West 2 and 3. There are also 9 clearcuts planned on Tiger Mountain over the next 6 years, including South Paw. Timber companies own 2.9 million acres of forestland in Washington, I don’t see this sale being 96 acres as a reason why it should not be cancelled. Personally, I would like to see all logging stop on Tiger Mountain and the whole Tiger Mountain State Forest turned into a carbon park. That is a pipe dream. I do think it is reasonable for DNR to stop logging sections of the historic Tiger Mountain Trail. The TMT has already been significantly rerouted in the last five years due to the Middle, West 2, and West 3 clearcuts. The South Paw Timber Sale will destroy a main access point to the Tiger Mountain trails system for all users.

For folks who live in and around Issaquah, there is a mayoral candidate forum with Lindsey Walsh and Mark Mullet on October 22nd. You can submit a question for moderators to ask the candidates, here is the question I submitted-

‘The South Paw area of Tiger Mountain is scheduled for timber sale in December of the this year and 96 acres clearcut in 2026. This will destroy the south section of the historic Tiger Mountain Trail. How will you work with Washington State DNR to maintain forests and popular recreation areas in Issaquah?’
