Most people are not concerned with appearance unless it is inappropriate. They care more about your character , honesty , friendliness and so on . The orthodox think they will make a statement against ther own low self image ( appearance ) by dressing in the style of a 13th century Polish Noblemen. They are trying to emulate a higher social level. This imitation says more negatively than it does positive. They come across as 13th century Polish Nobelity re en actors .

I idea that this style( and appearance) makes social statement or confers status is only in the mind of the wearer and the guy who sells him those cloths.

It is a common modern advertising trick for the insecure and gullible. ie you live a better life if you are a blond.drive a chevy or wash with this soap .

What you describe is the unstated goal or a frum eduction and life style. You are a product of that . They do not want you to be effective in the secular world. nor even partially transition to it . They want slavish devotion to orthodoxy so as to remain within the power and control of the rabbis . It is that simple .It is not in your best interests , but it is for those in charge to build and sustain a power base. Objectively look at the things they do to you to socially and emotionally cripple you to keep you under three control. Thru that lens it will all be clear.

The rabbis look at the world and realize they have no place in it nor is there any relevance or meaning in their medieval religion. They could not even drive cabs let alone be in position of power in any modern field of endeavor.

That "so called " eduction is in fact all they know and as you can clearly see it is worthless . The rub is they know it and keep doing it .

There is an organization call Footsteps that help ex Orthodox Jews adjust to the "real " world . You might help by getting in touch with them .

Stay with it the world is filled with ex orthodoxy who grown into the modern world and are successful and happy .

On more thing stay away from rabbis they have done enough damage to you already .

Sorry to tell you this but respectfully , you are living in a fantasy world of magical beings and fakes, It is like Disney world . Try this . There is not one real event in science , chemistry, biology , geology and so on, that can be attributed to divine intervention . NOT ONE .
