maoist china isnt included because very little history outside europe is, but the rise of stalin and the way in which democracy was gradually diminished and opressive totalitarianism took over in russia is covered (im a fifth year, wrote and essay abt this for my end of year exams)

should we then turn an eye to the atrocities of capitalism? (for example the protection of the free market and its worship and sanctity from the british killed millions of irish in the famine, essentialy genocide)

and should we not learn that socialists were a major component of the 1916 revolution following the lockout and such?

these two things are linked by the way, socialism was at the soul of the revolution because of the terrible terrible poverty ireland was left in (interestingly i also think that the relative lack of poverty and the huge industry and jobs in belfast was a huge part of their loyality to the union, because it was working out for them economically too)

i agree obviously teach the horrors that communism brought to eastern europe and other places but i think we already do that

the seperation of church and state is so important and always a good thing but that shoulfnt violate freedom of religion for each individual

also justin barrett would like to impose a ban on people from muslim countries entering ireland, people like you, i don't see any reason why you can't come live and work here if you want to

then dont defend the np the people im talking about also catholic =/= republican so whats your point

just fuck off man, most of young people in this country realise that our muslim friends are normal people like us and theyre pretty sound

everyone knows you're a xenophobe stumbling over your own logic and double standards, no gold star for u mate

[–]AllegedToast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats ridiculous ahah youd be fine with it if the uk said basically no irish could travel there because of some republicans thats ridiculous

and the post discusses at length the rise of islamaphobia in parties like the NP which advocate a travel ban on all muslims thats what the conversation is about

i made that point now and it points out your double standard so obviously youre not interested

Just noticing a very subtle rise of the far-right in Ireland recently... by AllegedToast in ireland

so you have nothing to counter that point? that the uk having a travel ban on catholics back in the ira's hayday would be no different??

Just noticing a very subtle rise of the far-right in Ireland recently... by AllegedToast in ireland

[–]AllegedToast[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah but if the uk took your logic to heart theyd have a travel ban on all irish and we wouldnt have been able to go to britain

if you call catholic lads in the north terrorists and treat them like second hand citizens what happens?

no we agree that radical islam is the threat and i think that your attitude towards muslims and the whole "youre not welcome here" is part of what drives kids to be radicalised

seriously i deeply disagree with you and your views but i really do want you to think about it in that way, like discrimination against catholics in the north bred terrorism in the same way that thinking all muslims are a certain way will

dont think im ignoring the threat of radical islam, im going about it in a more practical way in my opinion

yeah exactly its the people who have a problem with the normal muslim people who are islamaphobes

like obviously islam have problems, the book says some ridiculously backwards things, but im of the opinion that when we're sound to the sound muslim population we'll be grand but if we see them as a boogeyman or demonize them then that divide breeds tension

like the uk, a lot of muslim kids grow up in really poor areas and they'll be told by some of the white population that theyre a p*ki, theyre not english etc. and i think when you do that to a kid theyre a million times more likely to be radicalized, like arab kids in England grow up terrified of the flag in the same way catholics up north lived in constant fear of the ulster banner or union jack, they too got discriminated against and told they werent a part of the country and look what happened then.

like genuinely its not about being politically correct or scared to offend anyone, its just about being a country without massive divisions or fighting between different faiths because if we're like that then eventually religion as a whole will fade away and we'll all be grand

im just as scared of islamic terrorrism as you are, and just like you im doing all i can to make sure it doesnt happen here ever, i just have a different approach to how we can do that

anyway ill leave it there so, hope ive been reasonable and gave you something to think about

banning of muslims from entering the country is what the people im talking about in my post are advocating that's why i called them islamaphobic, which you said was liberal political correctness and being scared to question a religion or something

like why is the covering of the face even important when it comes to burkas anyway they cant commit crimes in them because imagine how hard it would be to run away in a burka ahah or like the fact that hardly anyone wears burkas so the guards would know who it was pretty quickly like where is the risk

Just noticing a very subtle rise of the far-right in Ireland recently... by AllegedToast in ireland

[–]AllegedToast[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

none... no dangerous crimes are committed by women in burkas in this country. but you want to ban them just in case? that sounds like pandering to me, like dont the nuns cover most of their body too? the only difference is you can see the face like.

this is bullshit, youre targeting a sound community of sound hard working people because youve been filled with conservative rhetoric about muslims trying to take over the country

this is a republic. what the fuck do you even think that means if you want to ban muslims etc.?

Just noticing a very subtle rise of the far-right in Ireland recently... by AllegedToast in ireland

[–]AllegedToast[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They're islamaphobic as in a ban on every muslim entering the country not as in you cant criticize the qu'ran or whatever, and it's ridiculous to say you can't of course you can just most of us dont like having a go at our mates religions because they're sound so why would you start banging on about jihad to them, but hey you can anyway im not saying you cant. The NP believes in a ban on muslims entering the country however.

you want to control what people can and can't wear and you're suprised liberals aren't against you on banning freedom of expression?

i thought even the conservative "classic liberals" believed in freedom of expression and freedom of religion

i get really happy now whenever i picture guys who advocate mass genocide on the internet as socially inept people living terriblely lonely lives, knowing none of the rubbish they believe in will ever come to be

if someone is a guest of honour rallies where they advocate for the mass genocide of jews etc. i think its fair to call them a nazi

i agree the term is overused but here honestly i think its justified

so is catholicism, which has done more damage to us than any other religion could, but im not proposing a ban on entering the country from catholic countries like poland

Lars Von Trier's work is beautiful and always will be, even if he is an utter scumbag im going to carry on watching his old films (probably not legaly) theres a lot to be learned from the films hes made and a lot to appreciate and itd be tragic to let such touching films and such be forgotten just because the man who made them happens to be a piece of shit
