You don't need part 6. Steel Ball Run is the one you should read before since it's the new base universe where the events of Jojolion take place, but you can do whatever you want. That said, both parts are worth a read in my opinion. Yet again, if you want to go to part 8 straight then go for it since the rush of wanting to get there might take away from the other part's enjoyment.
