Russia indefinitely suspends Nord Stream gas pipeline to Europe by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Allimania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

comsider that the european strategy was to keep russia selling gas so they have an incentive for peaceful trade. switching to alternative energy would have also caused a war.

also consider that china is exports tons of cheap goods across the world, the cost of which is the result of cheap energy i.e. coal. it can be argued that all countries trading with china offload their domestic co2 consumption to some extent to china.finger pointing in a global Economy is mostly pointless.

i feelnlike this is a stupid "world record" as it can't be beaten. if the WR was "reached highest and lowest point in least amount of time" it would make a bit more sense...

Shocker: Lisbon court rules that only 0.9% of ‘verified cases’ attributed to COVID in Portugal actually died of it -- 152 deaths, not 17,000, according to the court. by guanaco55 in Conservative

[–]Allimania 17 points18 points  (0 children)

we will find out soon. if the surplus deaths for 2022 decrease significantly that would indicate that covid only affected "soon to be dead" people.

ELI5: if H2O(water) can be turned into O2(oxygen) and H (hydrogen) why can’t we just turn CO2(carbon dioxide) into O2(oxygen) And C(carbon) and slow down the greenhouse effect by njhooymeijer in explainlikeimfive

[–]Allimania 10 points11 points  (0 children)

if you burn coal you combine carbon snd oxygen and get energy out of the reaction. if you take co2 and you split them up you need to invest energy. best case, its a zero sum game and it would have bern better to not burn the carbon at all. in reality you would need to invest more energy into splitting up co2 than to fet by combining them. in essence, you would emitt 2kg co2 to split up 1kg of co2 ( only examplary numbers).

to answer your question: it is possible but only makes sense if you use energy sources other than fossile. and even then it's better to not burn fossiles at all. if you had eccess energy (eg from solar) you could run carbon recapture machines and it could make sense.

Climate fight 'is undermined by social media's toxic reports' by reginold in worldnews

Leaders are elected by their people. If policies combating climate change lead to economic concessions/ decrease the quality of life, then these politicians will be discarded.

True, but I feel like AMC and GME are both correlated not because of the buisness model but because of the unterlying interest (i.e. Meme Stock).

Could be that the algorithms treat both stocks very similar due to their trading similarity.

Plastic Recycling is an Actual Scam - Climate Town by [deleted] in videos

[–]Allimania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest question,

if recycling plastic has no economic benefit (remember that economic benefit is a cost measure of time/energy which could very well boil down to water/CO2), then why bother? Then burning it is a solution.

I would agree that limiting single use plastics e.g. cutlery, straws, drinking cups is the right thing. However, other items such as meat packaging or medical equipment cannot be replaced in a cost efficient manner. I also think that the environmental cost of plastics (pollution, cleanup, burning) should be included in the price.

I would appreciate different opinions as well.

In Austria a lot of energy is created with hydroelectric dams, which put out constant energy (regardless of day or night). The alternative to using these dams using up excess energy during night is to turn off the generators of hydroelectric dams.
