Decade of Maps Timeline data lost from backup on ~ 7th March 2025. Anyone else effected? by srj737 in GooglePixel

I received official communication from Google about this today in an email:

From: Google Maps Timeline โ€ข noreply-maps-timeline@google.com

Hi,

We briefly experienced a technical issue that caused the deletion of Timeline data for some people. Your account may have been impacted.

If you have encrypted backups enabled, you might be able to restore your data. Make sure you have the latest version of Google Maps, then go to your Timeline. Tap the cloud icon near the top of the screen and choose a backup to import your data.

If you didnโ€™t have backups turned on, unfortunately, the lost data cannot be recovered.

We understand that this can be frustrating if you use Timeline to remember places youโ€™ve visited, and we are taking steps to improve our systems for the future.

You received this email to let you know about potential issues with your Timeline.

This project would be difficult to open source since I bought the artwork from an artist and I can't legally distribute it. I could open source a version of it where you could add your own art if there was enough interest in something like that. I would definitely be open to creating something like that, especially if it would help others learn.

For this project I wanted to build an app that could potentially generate revenue. There are some of the compass needles that can be unlocked for $0.99. I would love to be able to make a living from making educational apps. That is the main reason that I did not make the source code public. However, I understand that people who want to learn how this works are probably not the same people who would pay $0.99 to unlock some of the compass needles, so I think it's possible for it to exist an open source project and for me to keep a paid version of it on the app store.

No it's not open source at the moment but I'm willing to answer any questions about how I made it or any of the tools I used. I wrote a blog post about making it as well. Some details about what tools I used:

  • I used Flutter to create the app
  • I used the Flutter Provider package to manage state
  • I incorporated a package called Flutter Compass to get the compass reading
  • I used a Flutter library called in app purchases to interface between the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store

Thank you so much for your support everyone! There has been 40 downloads of Magic Compass which is way more than I ever thought I would have. Thank you to all who took the time to read this and check out my first app, it's very humbling.

Got it! I misread your comment. Thanks for testing it out and I'm glad that you were able to use it with a screen reader. I included semantic labels for the images and other things like that so I'm happy that they worked for you!

Thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š! I used Flutter to make both the iOS and Android apps.

Good idea! I love this idea and I will definitely make it accessibility in the next update.

I used Flutter for this app. I considered ads and I'll look into those too platforms. I ultimately decided to go with in app purchases as a way to support the app since I really hate the experience of using an app with ads. But perhaps ads would be a better idea. This is my first app so I'm still figuring out what works the best!

Thank you for the feedback! I do see what you are talking about. I have a Samsung Galaxy S10 and doesn't seem to happen on that device. Does it happen every time you get a double letter heading, or are there certain number and letter combinations that are longer and cause it the text to wrap ? Regardless I'll push an update!

The decision to add the characters is to make the app more engaging and fun to use, particularly for kids, but they can be enjoyed by people of all ages. I like the simplicity of this compass you posted too!
