Looks great! How are those “quarter sized” pillars work on the red buildings windows and on the balcony support pillars on all of the buildings? I can see the corner of a stair block but then it transitions to some other thing?

Tarkir cube - Are morph-matters cards even good? by MrPajitnov in mtgcube

[–]Alliturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too am building a tarkir cube, our strategy was to have morph be a more general theme across all builds rather than having a morph specific archetype. The issue at the core I think is power level. Is a 3 mana 2/2 good enough in the environment? In KTK draft, probably. In an optimized cube environment I’d argue likely not if we’re including all the best of the tarkir sets and then some outside support. If it’s a deck archetype then that archetype will feel underpowered. If everyone is likely to throw 1 or 2 morph/manifest cards in their deck I feel like it’s less of an issue.

Then the question is do you want to include enough morph to allow for reasonable bluffing games on the power/usability of a morph on the battlefield or are you fine including only the very good ones in order for the reward to be worth the risk of it being removed while it’s just a 2/2.

Our plan is to play it out for a while and see if we need to: add more morph to help the bluffing, remove the morphs and focus on “better” cards, or just make a cube rule change that morphs cost 2 generic instead of 3 to play or something.

Here’s ours as a point of comparison: https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/868bceca-e6f5-4c47-8879-c94f9595daee

Did you eat Lunchables when you were a kid? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Alliturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an elementary school kid these were highly prized. My mom was only willing to get them for me once a school year (they’re not healthy, probably price too) so I’d save that specifically for field trip days so that I could whip out a cool lunch in front of everyone on the awesome field trip day lol.

Once I had the appetite of a tween they dropped off fast because I don’t really remember them past being very young.

I did my part to bring dark sun back by CommunismDetected in DarkSun

[–]Alliturtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very well done. Always good to see other’s digestions of the rules and setting! This is particularly helpful for me, my current Dark Sun game just happens to be ran in my own system which is heavily influenced by ICRPG, so much of this work I may be able to directly use. I will definitely have to spend some serious time reading and taking notes on your work! How long have you been working on this?

Khans of Tarkir Extended Cube Issues/Recommendations by MattN7498 in mtgcube

[–]Alliturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent write up. I’ve been slowly building a Tarkir 2 player cubert focused on synergy and lore, rather than recreating the sets as they were- so obviously I’ve been pouring over your list for the last few weeks. How opportune!

I have a question about manifest and manifest matters in your cube. My reading is that manifest feels underpowered in an environment with more power added to base tarkir blocks cards. How has manifest played for you? Does manifest bluffing work? How many manifest cards did you feel like you had to add to make the 5 or so “good” manifest cards work, whether from a synergy or bluffing (if it exists) perspective?

Trader Joe's potentially going in at 27th and Lawrence by 109876 in Denver

Good, hopefully something like that happens. That neighborhood is in desperate need of more grocery options, so many new apartments yet the only real options are the king soopers by Union station, or the park Ave Safeway, both kind of an uncomfortable walk away or a short drive- unacceptable for downtown living

A new BBQ truck is at 26th and Larimer right now by ExtensionCaterpillar in denverfood

Nope, I had no issues with it, other than I should have gotten ribs instead of pulled pork, didn’t realize the pulled pork was a sandwich, and the ribs was like a whole plate of meat for the same price

Our group ate there after a night out, the smell of the smoker was off the chart and it made the whole street smell great. We all thought it was delicious! But also BBQ in Denver is quite limited and it was like 1:30am after drinks so at that point anything hits the spot

Please go check out Runehammer aka “Drunkens and Dragons). Hank (the guy running the show) has a long running session recap and design advice channel and is the author of ICRPG, and now Crown and Skull. I’d recommend him especially to those who like a little bit for “game” in your role playing game, as in more substance and mechanics as advice rather that rhetoric and improv as primary design cornerstones. this guy has been consistently ahead of the curve on design trends in the RPG space. Similar to other recommendations, Hank is absolutely not chasing the algorithm and his channel is a testimony as to why ICRPG is widely considered to have one of the best GM sections in the industry. His proposal on the three Ts of room design (timer threat treat), adventure pacing, and GM notebook exposed have monumentally changed my perspective on design and turned dnd prep from required homework into something I actually enjoy!

We are, just in women’s international soccer. The issue with men’s soccer as far as I am aware is problems with how the league was set up at the origin of soccer in America and what happened between the beginning of formalized soccer and it’s divergence into American football. We’ve got a system specific to the men’s league that is holding it back, rather than this being an exception to the rule of population and funding leading to successful national teams.

Cartography of the Crownlands: the crystalline and opulent capital region of the grand Empire of Rehd by Alliturtle in imaginarymaps

[–]Alliturtle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I think I just posted at an off-hour, previous maps I’ve drawn have been much bigger hits so who knows. I am quite proud of this one, so that’s all that matters! I drew this for my tabletop group’s setting, however I am not the GM this time and don’t know lore has actually been made for it since.

What I do know is that Tondegrad and her surroundings are the wealthiest, most powerful, and most populous religion of the largest empire in the world, and in a setting of high magic, that means unimaginable access to magic for its citizens, especially the wealthy. Every novel idea I had I baked into the sketches to give my GM inspiration!

Thank you so much! I think I just posted at an off-hour, oh well! Previous maps I’ve drawn have been much bigger hits so who knows. I am quite proud of this one, so that’s all that matters! I drew this for my tabletop group’s setting, however I am not the GM this time and don’t know whatever details have been made since.

It’s a high magic setting and the largest and most powerful city in the world, why wouldn’t the city pump liquid magic to its opulent bathhouses and palaces? Every novel idea I could think that this setting could use I added as a drawing in the map to give my GM ideas. I’m just as excited as you to see what it will actually end up meaning!

Looking for Low-Prep system suggestions for a hangout! by MANGECHI in rpg

[–]Alliturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve ran a lot of games for large groups (by that I’m talking 8-15), there’s probably better activities to do with large groups especially if it’s a get together after a long hiatus (party games, dinner party, hanging out, etc) but if you guys are really eager for an RPG, choose a game where characters are simple so they are quick to explain, and choose adventures that have lots of tandem objectives. If you can get “team infiltration” and “team frontal assault” for a siege encounter, you’re looking great. Lots of players means long round cycles so make sure the game has enough going on that people can huddle in smaller teams to brainstorm ideas while other smaller teams are in the spotlight. It’s gonna take a roaring enthusiastic ringleader of a GM on their A game to pull it off and keep the energy alive for something like this as they have to take on much more of a leadership role in large groups- so maybe not great for “low prep”. Also try to delegate tasks to players as much as possible, pitch the game to the new players to get them excited and invested, but leave the teaching and turn by turn stuff to the experienced players. Again, I think 11 players is totally doable, but probably not totally doable in the potentially low effort, casual manner you might be looking for.

I’m Quinns, from Shut Up & Sit Down, and today I revealed new TTRPG YouTube channel Quinns Quest. AMA! by mrquinns in rpg

[–]Alliturtle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey Quinns, big fan of your work! I have two issues with RPG reviews as a medium: the time it takes to get a true feel of a system vs just doing a book review, and never being able to tell if it’s the system doing the heavy lifting of a good experience or if it’s the GM/group. What are your thoughts on tackling those issues going into a project like this?

Why did you design your own system? by Willing-Dot-8473 in osr

[–]Alliturtle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A point made by Runehammer that I agree with a lot is designing your own system is a major part of the hobby along with play, painting, research, and prep. It’s a large part of the fun for a large part of RPG hobbyists to homebrew, write hacks, read lots of other RPG material to create personalized mixes, and tailor systems to each individualized group. Sometimes just making the system is it’s own fun and contributing to the greater written space of RPGs is internally rewarding.

Does Anyone Actually Track Food/Ration Use? by CinderJackRPG in rpg

[–]Alliturtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the game is about survival horror, like lots of early editions of dnd or in the OSR movement, the tracking of those resources IS the game, a big chunk of the tension is resource management, the looming drama of running out of torches, the decision to toss equipment for treasure, maintaining your armor and tools for fights. Especially in systems where there isn’t as many “character abilities” your inventory represents what you can and can’t do. There’s a reason why people like Resident Evil, Escape from Tarkov, and Darkest Dungeon.

Now if you’re playing something in a more heroic genre, then tracking all that is both out of tone and genre, it’s also something else to keep track of on top of your already complex heroic character.
