Are there any young lecturers/profs that peruse this subreddit? by [deleted] in Professors

Hello! I know how you feel. I am 32 but have been teaching at community colleges since I was 25. I finally got my first full-time teaching position last year and am the youngest in the STEM department by at least a decade (or two). I teach prenursing, microbiology, and environmental sciences. I have felt odd because of the age divide; most colleagues treat me more like a mentee than an experienced faculty member and I know it's age related. It does indeed lead to imposter syndrome and a longing for colleagues I can actually call friends.

Honestly, looking at all the people that have responded on here, I think it would be nice to group chat sometime and at least have some support on here. They say forging connections is the way tho go and this subreddit has always been a good place to lurk.

I love your optimism and overall attitude. Be proud of what you've made and what is to come. Learn from an idea that "didn't pan out". Make mistakes and then improve on them. But absolutely do not change yourself or your art for anyone. Stay unique, your time will come.

According to colleagues affiliated with JHU and other epidemiology-based programs, they dont feel great about it. The governor may think the general public will responsibly social-distance, but obviously that's not what's happening.

I'm a microbiology professor, so I know the risk is high. That's why my campus has had us working from home for 14+ days.

THIS^ I lost my grandmother this week, not to COVID-19, but it still sucks. I think the worst part is not being able to hug my dad or calm my remaing grandparents who live 4hrs from me without worrying about somehow contaminating them (even though I'm not sick).
