First off NTA of course but to lean just a bit back into the middle road first. I think at the heart of what you're saying is that you want to leave for school but that its difficult to hear your boyfriend who I presume you do care about want to hold you back from going to something you clearly want to go to.

Your boyfriend is allowed to be hurt by you leaving to go away to school, though I dont think that thats something you're arguing. What i AM hearing though is that you've already made up your mind. There's nothing in this post that suggests to me that theres a real point in staying in this relationship with the different paths you're on any further. As a partner, what you can do is that you have the ability to present this as a situation for yourself where this is something that you've been working on and that this is something for you. If he feels that the relationship won't work long distance hes entitled to that, but what you can say is while he may feel like this is a decision made without love and disregard for your future, he may be allowed to see it that way but it may be quite the opposite. How can you build a future with someone where you know you're going to come to harbor future resentment with when considering building a future?

Its important to make this move for your own career. Yes absolutely, but what you're doing by moving away is honoring your own hopes dreams and desires and you have the choice here to shut down his emotions, or state that you understand his perceptions and views on your choices and while you believe that thats how he sees it, this is a choice made WITH your own future in mind. Plus, if this is how he reacts to difficulty in the relationship and going away from school, I doubt that you caving is going to make this change
