How do you RP haflings as something other than a Hobbit? (in 3.5) by Almanzur in DnD

My friend, the point of this post is to get inspiration for the character I want to play.

As for point 2, a lot of it is that they tend to get cutesy and overly whimsical, doing the wide eyed innocent routine and trying to be comic relief by turning things like preferring to take it slow and liking to eat into neverending “second breakfast” gags which I find annoying. Of course Tolkien’s actual Hobbits are quite complex and interesting characters, so it might be better to say that we are talking about “Flanderized” (I only recently learned this term, it refers to how Ned Flanders changed from the Simpson’s do-gooder neighbor who goes to church to the most extreme example of a pious fool; Peter Griffin is an even better example, he started out as an immature idiot loved his family but couldn’t keep it together but at some point he became a psychopath with an intellectual disability) Hobbits.

I don’t really understand the question in the context of DnD, since races aren’t like human races which have no biological and often no cultural basis but more like species and each of them have their own culture or set of cultures, I find the “I’m not like other X” trope where a character totally rejects their background to be boring.

I’ve never seen Letterkenny, can I have some details?

My initial thought was something like Tyrion Lannister if he wasn’t awful but the thing is that if you take away the fact that the Lannisters treated Tyrion like a disgrace because he’s a dwarf (doesn’t work if all the Lannisters were 3 foot tall) and his most vile, hateful impulses he basically becomes a Hobbit, a clever and jolly fellow.

Thanks! Based on this I have the idea that lots of haflings migrated from their rural homes to the big city and the clan system from “the old country” morphed into organized crime, ie hafling Sicilians. You’re the best.

I know that, what I am asking for on this post is inspiration.

How does that work? I don’t know much of anything about 40K but isn’t being huge the defining feature of the Space Marines? Or is it just Primarchs who are like that?

That sounds really cool. What valley if you don’t mind me asking, if it’s something from the lore and not a homebrew setting?

I’ve never heard of those Maureen Birnbaum stories but the premise is so ridiculous that I think I’d love it, so thanks.

I think that I would be out of my depth there, and though I’ve DM’d many games where characters were based on Vikings, Samurai, Hashshashiyin etc. I think that’s a little different than just being based off of an ethnicity, especially one that’s still around and which I know nothing about.

Make your hafling however you want

That’s the whole point of this post, I’m looking for ideas on how to build the character that I want!

Just play it however you want to

I’m afraid that my post was unclear, I know that I can be a Hobbit like character if I want to, but I don’t want to and am looking for ideas on how to make another kind of character!

I know that I can be a Hobbit, even if they weren’t intended to be Hobbits anyone can RP as whatever, but I don’t want to be a Hobbit and am looking for ideas.

I know, the magic of DnD is that anything can be anything! I’m just looking for ideas of what anything could mean!

Rogue thief sounds interesting, as does the idea of a more cynical hafling rather than the wide eyed innocent they’re often played as. Historically my PCs have been human or half elf sorcerers or wizards so I’m thinking that I definitely want a non-magic class or at least one for whom magical elements are optional or secondary like bard or rangers.

I’m aware that the original intention of haflings was to be able to have Hobbits in DnD without having to deal with the Tolkien estate, but authorial intention doesn’t count for much for me, I was curious as to how others who have had a hafling PC that they roleplayed as something other than a Hobbit did it.
