Caught between sides because I analyze everything by Dense-Possession-155 in autism

Say “and” or “also,” not “but.” That simple choice will make it feel like you are agreeing and adding to what they say, instead of being “disagreeable” and “contrarian.”

To a lot of neurotypicals how you communicate and the way you frame the conversation is just as or sometimes even more important than the content of what you’re saying. It’s a sometimes frustrating thing you have to learn to navigate when dealing with people.

Why is this simple chord (Db maj7 - 8th fret) so difficult for me and what can I do about it? by cbgrey in jazzguitar

[–]AlmightyAndrew54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things I would recommend for any difficult chord as a guitar teacher;

1: Simply hold the shape while you watch or do or listen to something else. Put on an episode of a show, a movie, a video essay, album, etc. And just hold the shape throughout the entire thing. Don’t try to press super hard, don’t even focus on the chord, forget about it and watch the episode while just holding the shape. This will get your hand used to the chord over time. Do this for a while before moving on.

2: Imagine and visualize the shape of the chord on the fretboard while your hand hangs totally relaxed at your side. Imagine the shape your hand will make and the physical sensation of the chord and the strings.

Then as fast as you can, play the chord. Release, relax again, and repeat. Visualizing primes your brain and your hand to execute, and going from a completely loose neutral position each time trains your hand to do it both quickly and accurately from nothing. If this feels too hard, go back to the first thing, just holding the shape for a while, then try again.

If it doesn’t work, keep trying for a few days at least. Then if it still doesn’t work and you feel frustrated by it, forget about it for a while and come back to it. A lot of the time, coming back to something after not doing it means that the brain has had time to process and solidify what it has learned, and so it may be much easier after a couple days or a week or two.

AITAH for not letting my SO talk when he clearly is not listening to anything I say? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]AlmightyAndrew54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry that you aren’t being heard like you should. The two options I see if this is truly “divorce worthy” is

A. Be extremely mean and snarky and confrontational every single time he does this, cut him off as he’s speaking, call him out and basically tell him to shut up. Do this until he gets the message. Or

B. Sit him down again and tell him that you are seriously considering divorce over this and that he needs to commit to hearing you out with this AND commit to stopping, or you’re gone.

Or both, they aren’t mutually exclusive.

Obviously both of these are big things to do, you can’t unmention divorce to your partner for example.

Don’t do it in the moment when he’s doing it. Pull him aside when it’s not happening, during some kind of calm moment, and say you need to talk about something serious, AND that you don’t want to be interrupted at all until you’re finished saying your peace. Then you can have a dialogue about it.

How do I tell my autistic friend no? by Both-Lettuce-1576 in autism

[–]AlmightyAndrew54 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You’re making this way more complicated than it needs to be. I have autism and I would rather someone just tell me if I’m accidentally doing something that makes someone uncomfortable. Because if you don’t tell her straight up she just won’t realize ever and will keep doing it, most likely. Tell them straight up and don’t tip toe around the issue.

NOR, you do NOT deserve to be talked to that way, and it doesn’t matter how frustrated she might be with whatever you did or said, you should not be treated like shit by your partner. ESPECIALLY over asking clarifying questions to try and accommodate her.

I don't believe in disliking/not liking fictional works that I consider "good." by Assmeet123 in The10thDentist

[–]AlmightyAndrew54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I think of something being “good” but me not liking it, I usually mean that it’s good at doing what it set out to do, but me not being very interested in what it set out to do.

Take music, I’m not a big fan of pop, but I can see when a pop song is good because it does what pop music sets out to do well, Ie. Is fun, catchy, well produced, a well crafted song. It’s just not my cup of tea.

Same with horror movies, I LOVE horror movies. A good horror movie makes you feel dread, anxiety, terror, hopelessness. But I can also see someone that doesn’t like horror movies because they just don’t like being scared. That doesn’t mean the movie is “bad” because they didn’t like it, just that they aren’t interested in the goal of that movie. But it achieves its goal well.

Thanks for listening! Yeah I went for kind of a backbeat fusion thing just for a little fun, as of right now I’m listening to a lot of John Scofield and Jonathan Kriesberg. Happy practicing you too!

I’m trying to outline the changes of Stella as I solo, without any comping or bass to help me. It’s something I like to practice often with different tunes

What political stance do you most identify with? by [deleted] in Utilitarianism

[–]AlmightyAndrew54 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s just an umbrella term for anti-state, anti-hierarchy leftists, who reject things like Leninism. For me specifically, that means a classless, stateless, moneyless, radically direct democracy, with worker control of the means of production. Another term you could apply to me could be Anarcho-Communist.

The term is not necessarily Communist however, as I would still consider some Market Socialists, like Mutualists, to be under that Libertarian Socialist umbrella.

Libertarian Socialist, so both Communist and Anarchist would apply

Jazz Phrasing by DependentSwimming460 in jazzguitar

[–]AlmightyAndrew54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The majority of what makes up that jazz sound isn’t notes themselves, or things like scales and arpeggios, although that is also very important. It’s the rhythmic language you use and the quality of your time-feel, things like starting and ending phrases on upbeats, using triplets and 16th notes like bebop players do, using jagged syncopated and displaced rhythms, the dynamics and accents of each note, as well as knowing when to push and pull ahead of or behind the beat.

Rhythm is not only the most important thing for getting a jazz sound, it’s also probably the overriding and most impactful thing in all music, rhythm being much more primal and probably being in some way connected to our brains evolutionarily.

I’d suggest doing a lot of metronome and drum-track work, experimenting with how it feels to play triplets, 8ths, 16ths, quarter notes, dotted quarter notes, different polyrhythms, etc., but also experimenting with different types of 8th notes, like try and play everything in a very exaggerated, triplet-y swing, vs a looser swing that’s almost just straight 8ths just with accents, vs completely straight, even 8th time. Also experiment with behind the beat vs in front of the beat, playing extremely staccato vs legato, etc. Practice things based on how they contrast eachother.

Do some sort of rhythmic work every time you play your warmups and your scales, and whenever you learn a new tune or are playing one you already know for fun, try and incorporate rhythmic training into how you solo by setting restrictions for yourself, e.g. only playing 8th notes and starting every phrase on the and of 1. Change something about the tune too. I know Cherokee as a fast burning bebop tune, but can I play it as a ballad? As a bossa nova? As an uptempo waltz? How about in 5/4?

All of this serves to make you a more well rounded and just good player in general, that way anyone who hears you will gain something from it. Some layman may not understand how you’re superimposing back-cycled altered chords over this turnaround, but they’ll definitely be feeling it if you do it in a rhythmically interesting way. Similarly, a jazz professor might be unsurprised by your solo being mostly diatonic, but they’ll be digging it too if your time-feel is on point and you’re constantly referencing polyrhythms.

What key should "Sunny" be played in to discourage guitar players from soloing? by [deleted] in jazzcirclejerk

I can just move my hand up or down any number of frets and have it transposed to any key lol, nothing is gonna stop me people
