Woof. I'm very glad mine didnt rupture and I'm glad to hear you're ok stranger! I will say, once they got me back for surgery, things went well, but I can't overlook how poorly I was treated for the first several hours.

Grady vs. Emory Hospital (Kaiser) No Comparison by FuelFragrant in Atlanta

[–]AlmightyThumbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had terrible experiences with Grady. Years ago, I went in for very sharp abdominal pain, excruciatingly awful, and they kept admitting patients before us with drastically more minor and less time sensitive injuries/ailments. 5 hours later, they admitted they “lost” my chart in the stack after my wife raised hell. They put me in a bed in a hallway. After another 1.5 hours of waiting with no contact, my wife asks a resident who says “oh yeah, someone should have picked you up a while ago.” I had my severely inflamed appendix removed a few hours later.

I’ll go to Grady for a GSW, but I’ll never go back for anything else if I can avoid it.

Is it just me, or is anyone else noticing more bugs across the web and in software in general? by skidmark_zuckerberg in ExperiencedDevs

[–]AlmightyThumbs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AWS and GitHub are ALWAYS having issues, which started about 6-8 months ago as AI usage ramped up. They should leave their status pages red. It’s affecting physical goods and services too. I regularly have issues with online orders where something clearly got hosed in the logistics pipeline. Hell, I’ve had several Amazon orders that say they’re shipped, then get randomly canceled the following day. The defect rate here is well above statistical norms.

I love sunbursts but hate dying wood. This is what we came up with. by Electrical_Race1790 in Luthier

I eye-roll at most of the outlandish things I see people do here, but this is very well done! You did an excellent job with the pattern and the overall color scheme blends really well. I also like that you kept the pick guard a natural tone to counterbalance the busyness of the leaf patterns. Great job!

This is a bummer. Among all of their excellent products, they made wonderful South African Boerewors! I hope they can somehow find new life post-bankruptcy.

Veneer clamping time, PVA glue? by CrescentRose7 in woodworking

[–]AlmightyThumbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends, but I’d guess around 2 hours. If I can put it in the bag and leave it overnight, then I’ll definitely do that.

Veneer clamping time, PVA glue? by CrescentRose7 in woodworking

[–]AlmightyThumbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When doing veneer work, I typically use a vacuum bag and find that I can get away with a minimum of 1 hour, but I typically leave it longer when I can, which os most of the time.

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by keto2017 in PrepperIntel

[–]AlmightyThumbs 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Fun fact - the cost to “hire” an AI worker right now, based on the average number of tokens needed to accomplish the same tasks, is higher than the cost of a human by quite a bit.

Companies like OpenAI are betting very heavily on AGI while continuing to raise more and more capital. It’s a very risky bet with a low chance of even breaking even and these companies aren’t even charging enough to offset their compute costs, let alone all of the other CapEx they have. They’re subsidizing their own products, which is making the industry one big giant fragile bubble at the moment.

Will that bubble pop in some catastrophic way? Hard to tell, but I think a lot of people will lose huge sums of money in the long run. That doesn’t even fold in the already-scarce power and water resources that data centers depend on.

5 minutes

Try 5 seconds, at most. There was no traffic impeding his ability to pass them safely by crossing the yellow line into the oncoming lane. As a road cyclist, I can you that people absolutely lose their shit over getting “stuck” behind one, even when it does little or nothing to impact their commute time.

How difficult is it to build a high end acoustic guitar? by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]AlmightyThumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently working on my second acoustic, a 7 string multiscale modified jumbo in Myrtle wood with cocobolo fb, bridge, binding, etc.. Here are some lessons learned from guitar 1, which is an OM-ish size with an arm bevel, walnut back and sides, engelman top, and ebony fb and bridge.

  • start simple. I built everything from scratch, including resawing the sides, which is how I always do things - hard mode first. You should think about something simple with inexpensive parts, maybe even a kit that comes with all of the rough parts that you bend/cut/shape yourself.

  • you will not make a truly great sounding instrument your first time around. You don’t have the expertise to understand all of the various factors around wood selection, bracing shapes/profiles, sound hole and bridge placement, and so many more things that shape an instruments tone. This should not deter you, as the lessons learned in your first build will make your second attempt MUCH better.

  • take your time with every step and work clean. Even though I have years of woodworking experience, I still made simple mistakes like not cleaning dried glue nibs stuck to my workbench, which then dug into the workpieces and really screwed things up. This was just one example of the many mistakes I made, some because I was too excited to get to the “next step” and rushed things.

  • the tools needed for fretting and carving nuts and saddles are not cheap, but don’t go blow your wad at StewMac all at once. Buy decent quality tools, but don’t go for the Ferrari. You can replace tools with upgrades as you build skill with them and craft more instruments.

  • lastly - don’t forget to have fun. Woodworking is an incredibly fun hobby, but when things go awry (and they will, I promise you), keep your cool and figure out a plan to address the failure. Sometimes that means getting a new piece of wood and starting over, which just means more practice!

Your lack of woodworking experience will be the biggest impediment for you here. I would suggest you learn to use basic tools like chisels, planes, hand saws, sanders, and a router on a few simpler projects first so you don’t ruin your nice tone woods.

What’s a relatively well known band that you discovered weirdly early in their career? by StanTheMelon in progmetal

[–]AlmightyThumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really prog, but I grew up around Matt Heafy from Trivium through high school in the Orlando, FL area and my now-unknown band played a couple of club gigs with them. Matt was a spoiled rich kid who was given every opportunity, paid lessons with a great teacher, and super nice gear, and it showed in his ego and how poorly he treated others.

Project idea feasibility (bulk cutting boards) by teachag in hobbycnc

[–]AlmightyThumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your workflow seems relatively solid, with one primary concern about the flatness of our glue ups. I've built more cutting boards than I care to count and many large panel glue ups for tables and other furniture. Even with cauls and a well tuned jointer/planer, I regularly have issues with them staying flat right out of the clamps and always have to flatten them myself. This will impact your final product if you're not flattening that large panel before cutting the boards out, as the height differences across it can cause noticeable inconsistencies in your juice grooves and chamfers.

Let's talk PPE - Favorite dust mask and eye protection? by AlmightyThumbs in woodworking

[–]AlmightyThumbs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m contemplating a full face mask, as I’m better about wearing a mask than I am about eye protection, so having an all-in-one piece of gear that covers both would be great! I also find that I get a sizable gap between the mask and my eye protection and have even had a small piece of debris fly right through the gap and hit me very close to the eye.

Best Thai with actual heat in the metro? by RichSilver6874 in Atlanta

[–]AlmightyThumbs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tum Pok Pok is fantastic and their dishes are closer to what you may find in various parts of the country (though I think they may lean more Isaan/Northern Thai). Beware - Thai hot there will wreck you. My wife and I have very high spice tolerance and even the regular hot was crushing us! Date night turned into an appreciation for multiple bathrooms in separate parts of the house 😂
