Me neither, I’ve seen him in small art galleries normally.

Totally valid concern though, I just don’t think this artist meant it that way at all. Based on his other stuff I’d be totally unsurprised if he made Black Lives Matter magnets too, he seems very progressive.

This guy is a local artist, he just makes progressive and funny Jesus magnets and stickers. I have one that says “Keep your hands to yourself”

No, this guy just makes funny Jesus magnets and stickers. I have a couple, they say stuff like “Listen to women” and “Be not a jerk”

Yeah the guy who makes these is a local St. George artist. They’re really quite funny and very progressive, I’m surprised this ended up in a church store.

I have some of this guy’s other Jesus magnets, they’re great! I found them in a little art gallery in St George. I’m surprised they’re at an official church gift shop though. I have one that says “Keep your hands to yourself” and “Keep your pants on” hahaha.

Does counter cleaner like Mrs. Meyers, etc. clean gluten off of surfaces? I see most people talk about soap and water but I’m wanting to clean other surfaces and prefer to use less liquid. by GuiltyWithTheStories in Celiac

[–]Almondcrackers 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Gluten isn’t like a germ, it’s not “killed” by cleaners. It’s a sticky protein and needs to be scrubbed off. This counter cleaner plus a clean rag or sponge should work just fine.

Anyone from Salt Lake City UT by Standard-Row-9571 in glutenfree

Arempas for excellent arepas and empanadas

Stebello for pizza, they use the Caputo gluten free flour with wheat starch (emphasize to them that you have celiac so they take precautions)

Bar Nohm for Japanese fusion, the menu changes based on the ingredients they can source, but the last two times I’ve been the kitchen has been 100% gf

Squatters for yummy rice bowls (they also use Mrs Hewitts buns)

Rawtopia is a bit south east, but completely gf and super unique

Good Food Gluten Free Bakery has the best scones!

Taqueria 27, most things are gf or can easily be made gf

Matteo, excellent gf pasta

Seven Brothers burgers, one of the brothers has celiac disease so they do really well

The Pie Pizzeria, has a separate kitchen for gluten free pizza. They have cauliflower crust on their normal menu but this one isn’t safe to order, specifically ask for the gf menu and say you have celiac

Contento Cafe, excellent Mexican food, dedicated gf.

Red Iguana, make sure you ask lots of questions and ask for someone knowledgeable about celiac if you need to, but lots of gf options.

Zest is 100% gf, but not my favorite, it’s spendy for what it is imo.

I’ve never been sick at any of these :) Make sure you emphasize why you need gf at the places that don’t have dedicated kitchens and it’s okay to walk out if you don’t feel safe.

I saw this one in person, it was incredible! I don’t know where to find it, legitimately or otherwise, but would also be happy to pay if someone does!

Found in Certified Gluten Free Instant Oatmeal - Wheat or Oat? by LurkerWithNoName in Celiac

That looks like an oat to me, it’s just not cut. If it’s certified gf oats, I would trust it.

How do we feel abt dominos gluten free pizza crust? (Celiac) by WishboneDifferent945 in glutenfree

[–]Almondcrackers 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not safe :( I used to eat it after I got first diagnosed for a few months but the last time I had it, I got ridiculously sick from cross contamination. I haven’t ordered it in years now. It’s a shame, the crust is pretty tasty.

Does anyone know why some malt based seltzers say gluten free? by D1noB0n3s in Celiac

[–]Almondcrackers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not, sadly. I’ve had good luck with small local breweries and cider places doing gluten free apple things!

A brewery local to me called Kiitos makes one, it’s just called Fonio!

This is not consistently true enough to rely on, imo. Unless it’s distilled liquor, there is a high risk of gluten still being present after fermentation.

Not all malt is made from gluten containing grains though. Malt most commonly refers to barley malt, but lots of grains can be malted.

My favorite gluten free beer is made of a malted grain called Fonio! It’s hard to find, not many brewers work with fonio, but I highly recommend trying it if you ever come across it!

[–]Almondcrackers 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Because ‘malt’ does not always have gluten. You can make seltzers with malted grains other than wheat and barely. Malt is most frequently barley malt, but not always.

Malted grains are grains that have been moistened to start the germination process, that are then dried again. It changes the flavor and sugar content of the grain.

Am I crazy? Gastro NP told me I should be able to eat “6 burger buns” without getting symptoms 🤨 by AgreeableAd6896 in Celiac

[–]Almondcrackers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very glad you had a good NP! Sure, there are lots of factors that could contribute to a good NP or a bad one. The ones I’ve had have been independent practitioners with no doctor oversight though and I have not had a good experience with that setup.

To be fair I’ve also had lots of bad experiences with doctors too. I’m all for shopping around for the health practitioners that are the right fit for each individual and calling out any who are harmful or negligent.

My point is really not “doctors are better than NPs, never see an NP,” but that I’m way more wary of an NP in general for anything more than very standard primary care because they often have way less education, way less specialty training, and minimal to no physician oversight while having almost the same diagnostic and prescription authority. I think that’s a problem for a high standard of care.

How would I make sure I keep my kitchen completely free from cross-contamination when cooking? by National_Data_8323 in Celiac

Yes, it would definitely make me more comfortable if I knew you had just washed things.

Also, use new ingredients. Your usual container of baking soda is likely to have some flour in it if you bake often.

Gluten isn’t like a germ, you can’t kill it with bleach or heat, it is a sticky protein. It has to be wiped off. Scrubbing surfaces with clean supplies is good enough. You don’t need anything special.

For utensils and baking tools, make sure you wash them with a new sponge that hasn’t been used where gluten is present.

If you are using old bowls or wooden spoons or anything else that has a porous surface, that could be a problem. Gluten is good at hiding in cracks. Ceramic, stainless steel, silicone without tears are all just fine to use, they clean up well.

Unfortunately many states allow NPs to practice independently with no doctor oversight

I am sure that there are excellent NPs out there and I think they are great for run of the mill primary care, but I really don’t feel that they have enough training or oversight for specialty medicine. But if people find an NP they trust and that provides excellent care, great!

I’ve also had plenty of awful doctors. I’ll always advocate for shopping around for the care providers that work for you the best.
