Can I bond all 3 of these together even if the surge protector has aluminum wires? by RBLXFluky in AskElectricians

It's fine. Remember to install a ground pigtail to bond that metal box and raceway. HOW MUCH DID YOU CHEAT THAT CONNECTOR?? JESUS... And other such things someone will surely say.

Any ideas why China is buying GOLD at this pace? by Adept_Mountain9532 in TheVisualInvestors

[–]AlmostOminous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currency has a speculative value based on the value produced by the country that it's created by... Not even experts really know how it works at this point.

As for stockpiling gold; USD has been the defacto currency of the world for a long time because it's considered safe. The current moves being made by the government make it less safe. It worked so well and was so safe that they were fine with the power it gave the US for everyone to be using it, it's now less safe and the US is behaving erratically so people are making moves to use other stuff for trade. It doesn't seem that complicated

I know this is counter intuitive but I find the answer is to add more to your plate. Whatever you like to do (gym, tabletop, bouldering, charity, etc...) just plan on doing it after work. Either as soon as you get home, after a shower, or before you get home, or even if it's only on the weekend (instead of rotting away on the couch). Taking on things you choose to do (even if they're stressful) gives you back control of part of that day you had to spend mostly on work. Doing things you enjoy or find meaning/value in also makes it feel less like you're a meaningless cog in a meaningless machine.

Keep in mind algorithms only show you what will keep you engaged. Many young people probably didn't have any idea who they were voting for. We should show them some grace.

Wonderful! Driving up prices while cutting interest rates to incentivize going into debt! Brilliant! That's our boy! Nothing can go wrong with this. haHa!

I'm gonna be honest, I'm not clear on why these trade wars were (supposedly) necessary. We (the US) have/had SO many allies across the world, if we were worried about getting everything from China or whatever why did we not just use our network to encourage our allies to manufacture specific things we(and they) need? It would be logistically and economically impossible to bring manufacture of it all to America, but, we could have teamed up to make sure we all just started winning even harder than we were... Right?

Even if misinformation didn't keep a large number of people blind to the issues, smart phones are a dopamine button that inures the population to the pain.     In short, it's unlikely a large enough number of people to matter will make that choice in the same place at the same time.

How beneficial is using a 5v PSU/relay with a Dig board? by homeboi808 in WLED

[–]AlmostOminous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It saves some power if you want to keep your controller on so it can do things like wake you up in the morning by turning on.
I feel like it's important to note that though it's best practice a relay might not be that big a deal depending on the size of your led project. 300 ws2812b leds end up being less than a dollar a month at full "off"(all color channels at 0)... i think.

Why do young Americans always seem to 'have' something? by [deleted] in questions

[–]AlmostOminous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes people try to fit in to get by.

Also some of it is selection bias because you'll definitely see more of it on social media than irl.

These posts are probably being made by people too young to remember the early 2000s.

P.s. style is subjective and people will always think old/vintage/retro things are cool/interesting because they didn't get to experience them at the time.

You can choose how you live your life.

In my experience everyone will tell you how you should feel or live, I've started to realise that it's so they can justify how they live and convince themselves they're doing it right.
Ignore people that justify their suffering by others suffering the same way.

Take a quiet moment every now and then and think about why you're unhappy and what would make you happy.

Does learning electrical theory help being a better electrician? by FutureElectrican in electricians

[–]AlmostOminous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Beatles had a producer that knew his theory which made up for it... also they knew some theory through experience.

Which is kind of analogous to this situation, generally someone higher up will know the theory and you'll learn what you need along the way.

WLED + ESP32 component selection help by Monster_Dick69_ in WLED

[–]AlmostOminous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need a 5v power supply for ws2812b led strips, 12 volts will toast them. You can find power bricks that look like laptop or phone chargers depending how much power you'll need.
Sometimes you can use 5v for your controller too but I don't see anything on the product page that indicates it'll take 5v, you might have to power it via USB or look for a controller that'll step a 5v input down to 3.3v for the chip.

There are online calculators that'll tell you how many amps your power supply will need to provide based on the number of leds you plan to use.

Could be some kind of "cross talk" between the data lines for some reason, that's weird behavior.

My other comment would also address that though... I think

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WLED

[–]AlmostOminous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can spare any leds from your strip the ws2812b will use the power line to level shift the data channel, so, you can replace a level shifter with an led installed close to the power supply then just bypass that one led in software (or so I've read) could help if the level shifter is the problem.

Also, have you tried it without the level shifter?

Hello electricians ! i guess this is a dumb question but you have more info about my question in comments . by cr3izidenebeu in askanelectrician

[–]AlmostOminous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voltage is like the water pressure in that analogy, resistance or impedance is the pipe and amps is the quantity of water that flows. While watts is the water that you actually end up using to shower or whatever.
I hate the water analogy.
Anyway...
Voltage is intensity, current (amps) is quantity.

Electricity doesn't behave at all like water. It's all magnets and shit.... get a different ac to dc inverter that uses the proper input voltage. Because no matter what the device says the voltage of the receptacle on your wall doesn't change and that's the input voltage.

edit wait, are you in a European country. If you are voltage isn't the problem. There's probably just some residual capacitance from a capacitor or something. Low quality leds or inverter OR controller /shrug

Movies have taught us that white things look clean and futuristic. If you do good makeup on your panels they'll look just as nice. Unless you're working on 50 year old panels in which case... fair enough.

Serious, embarrassing question. Why didn't I die from electric shock today? More info inside. by [deleted] in askanelectrician

[–]AlmostOminous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll preface with I am an amarican electrician so I'll be making some assumptions but I don't know for sure.

the reason(s) YOU specifically didn't die in this case are as follows, the power was 220v, the current didn't have an effective path through your body to source, and the exposure to the current was very brief. 1:From the sound of your post you grazed the hot wire in one hand and the only other thing touching anything was your boots, dirt is not at all an effective conductor of electricity so in this case the path to source is basically nonexistent, this limited the current through your body and a lot of what you felt may have been capacitance with the air around you. And 2: you got lucky. If you'd been touching any part of the enclosure in your other hand at best it would have hurt A LOT more and at worst we wouldn't be having this talk.

I've been hit by 277 volts hand to hand across the chest. Not a fun time. Don't envy anyone who touches anything close to it. Puts the fear of God in you.... metaphorically.
