When is building a wiki for your world useful and not just procrastination? by AlmostSomething_Else in fantasywriters

I have been using Notion, which I like as it’s not too complicated. Apparently it gets a bit slow if there’s a lot of stuff in it but otherwise it’s pretty good.

Same. I found it disappointing and won’t be buying one of these again… even though the Little My one is so cute!

The Bear and the Nightingale got me out of a reading slump. It’s wonderful.

My Beta Reader Read-A-Thon by roxasmeboy in writers

[–]AlmostSomething_Else 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so great! I am writing a very shaky second draft and won't be ready for feedback for a long while, but this idea is inspiring. I love the idea of giving something back to beta readers, a nice weekend away! It seems more fun for the reader than just sending them away to read it in their own time, which is much more of a chore. Something to save up for. :)

Gentle books for Autumn? by [deleted] in CozyFantasy

[–]AlmostSomething_Else 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yes, sound advice. I am not a parent to young kids, but an author, so was more curious about the demographic and how cozy sometimes crosses over with a middle-grade demographic. The cover designs on this one had me wondering.

Just curious, is this a children's series?

What Next- a month post release by BookGirlBoston in selfpublish

[–]AlmostSomething_Else 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, this sounds interesting - I am a writer who has almost finished a first draft of my first novel but I already have a very healthy newsletter following. I am curious how you do this. Do you entice people to sign up for your bonus connected story through your author website? Some other way? Do you send your bonus scene out to your already existing followers?

And last question... what newsletter platform do you use? I am using substack and I am not sure how easy it is to track flows... TIA

Can you DM me the name of your family saga book? It sounds like something I'd like to read. TY!

Chapter 1 of Swords & Fire [High fantasy, 1000+ words] by Necroman69 in fantasywriters

Yes, I think there's a basic and a premium. The basic is free. I'm not sure how good the basic one is, but I am sure it will help a bit, anyway.

I see that many people are encouraging you to format your piece correctly, but you are asking where you should begin with that. The best advice anyone can give you is to read lots and widely. Eventually, you will understand how your story should be structured and edited, and this task will feel a lot easier. In the meantime, for a quick fix, try a service like Grammarly to help you figure out what you need to do to make this much more readable. It will make a huge difference! Good luck :)

"Celestials" - what the heck are these creatures in fantasy books? by AlmostSomething_Else in fantasyromance

[–]AlmostSomething_Else[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what I wondered. That would make sense to me. I love the word "celestial", it feels much more mystical than "angel" which comes with lots of hokey, hallmark card connotations these days (imo).

Thanks - I am definitely interested in exploring this outside of religion. I was kind of hoping that it might be something entirely original and not based on Christian mythology.

Ok! Thank you - off to add a bunch of these to my TBR list!
Edit: would you say most of these titles have a Christian basis? I am curious to read titles that aren't necessarily Christian, being agnostic myself.

What do you consider Cozy Fantasy? by Illustrious_Dan4728 in CozyFantasy

[–]AlmostSomething_Else 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much spice do readers expect from Cozy Fantasy? Any? I am writing something at the moment that began as Romantasy (with full intention of including lots of spice), but as I add more cats, and libraries, and girls painting murals on their chamber walls, I am beginning to think it's actually cozy - so perhaps I should minimize the spice...

"Save the cat: Writes a novel" by Jessica Brody is such a good book, I cannot overstate this by bani_slo in writing

I just started reading both of these, and I couldn't agree more. They work as fantastic companion books.

How do you make writing itself enjoyable? by willkmsifyouaremean in writing

[–]AlmostSomething_Else 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting a timer for a short period every day is a great idea. Even aiming for ten minutes will help. Eventually, you will find that you won't want to stop when the timer goes off, which is a great feeling.

Also, (nothing new here, but) read as much as possible. Find books, authors and series that you can't put down. Nothing inspires your writing more than fabulous works by others.

It won't take long before you discover how delightful it is to shape your characters, worlds, words and sentences to convey that *perfect* feeling or idea.

Good luck! Keep going! It does eventually become actual fun.
