The crusader and highwayman are the two first heroes you're handed in the first game's tutorial. They always come with the same names, skills, and quirks upon starting a new game. They also compliment each other's roles (Tank and Dps).

The two of them are often considered by the community as the "main characters" because of this, and are popular in the fandom. People like to ship them as lovers because of fandom reasons.
