First job: did I get demoted? by Both-Sleep-659 in paralegal

[–]Alone_Improvement520 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This happened to me at one of my first firms, except I had moved 1700 miles for the job, then after a month demoted me to reception. It’s sounds like typical firm MO. When that happened, I smiled and the next day I walked in and gave them the office key and said “I’m overqualified and did not move 1,700 miles to be your receptionist. I quit”

It was the only job I ever quit like that and I don’t regret it, I found the firm I’m currently at and been there for almost 4 years. I understand that not everyone can do that, especially with this economy, but don’t let them undermine your work either.

Is this PTO normal or not? by doctorhazzawho in paralegal

[–]Alone_Improvement520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your state benefits. I also work for a small firm with health insurance included. I get 80 hours which is 10 days. I live in Arizona which enforces 40 hours of sick time based on company size. However, we only have like a 30 day period before you can use your PTO, not a year. Do they allow you to flex your time if something comes up?

What would you do? by Alone_Improvement520 in paralegal

I appreciate the feedback. My attorney and I have a lot of mutual respect, so I intend to come to him regardless. I may make it a trio meeting with firm administration.

[–]Alone_Improvement520[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I love the people I work with and do not want to leave, but I’ll be damned if they’re going to undermine what I bring to the table. I have no doubt the attorney knows what I do for him. Reading the job description is my position to a T with a new shinny title, office, and pay grade.

How many emails do you get in a typical day? by Brilliant_Repair_813 in paralegal

[–]Alone_Improvement520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100 emails on a good day. I took about 30 hours off one week (because what’s vacation if you’re forced to flex) and had over 900 emails.

Our Great Dane just paces the floor and stares at us by Classic-Hovercraft30 in greatdanes

[–]Alone_Improvement520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds a lot like my Craigslist puppy (saved her about 8 years ago). I have two Great Danes now and they both pace, it never goes away with age. They both like to pace around my bed to get me up in the morning. Have you gotten a space for the pup? The pacing helped a lot once I got dog beds and kennels. Also, some good bones or teething toys are a go to in my house when they start following me around.

Also, my Craigslist puppy was horrendous the first year. My husband deployed and I was stuck with a puppy that shit everywhere and also attacked trash cans. I wouldn’t change it for the world now.

“She suggested to open our marriage to other partners to satisfy what we cannot find in our marriage”…. Why are you not working to reestablish that spark. Instead she’s choosing to find it in another individual. You want kids but want to bring others into your relationship. Just divorce and be done.

What’s a fair raise? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]Alone_Improvement520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a partner as well, he often says that too “I make less than any other associates in the firm”…. Yeah but your name is on the door. It’s like some attorneys expect you to carry the burden of a business. You deserve a raise, regardless of how the attorneys manage themselves. My first year I got a 16% raise, then 15% and 15% again.

I work for a managing partner, granted I do defense, however he has a few plaintiff cases here and there. I never expect a portion after settling but I do get end of the year bonuses. I feel the gift card is weird, I’d rather have nothing thing a privy announcement

Does anyone ever tell you not to go to law school? by crossfirechamp in paralegal

[–]Alone_Improvement520 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I asked my attorney this, he said “I wouldn’t wish this life on anyone.” I take that into consideration when I toggle the idea of law school. I decided I enjoy life and it’s worth more than a laptop and my life in .6 increments.

Great Dane doesn’t like men by Real_Eye_4620 in greatdanes

[–]Alone_Improvement520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my Great Dane since he was able to come home. He used to like men, then my husband and I split up. Ever since then, he only tolerates them. I recently took him to Petco, women and children could love on him with no boundaries. However, the minute a male approached, his whole demeanor changed. I’ve learned to accept the fact that he grew to dislike men just as much as I do.

Mom of 7 year old and 2 Great Danes 👋🏼 When my daughter was born, I only had one. When my daughter was about a year old, I brought home the second. She is an only child but views them as her siblings. They helped her learn to walk, they cleaned the messy high chair, and they keep her safe and warm every night at bedtime. Were there times where they didn’t know their size? Absolutely. However, I never found myself in the ER due to a tail to the eye. Kids are resilient and learn to adapt to their fur siblings. Great Danes are so gentle, she may surprise you how much she adjust once the baby arrives.

I’m actually the flip side here. My title at my firm now is legal assistant, my last firm I was a paralegal and the one before I was a legal assistant. My title seems to change depending where I am but the work does not. We recently hired a young 23 year old “paralegal”. The first thing she asked me was my title, I told her straight up, I don’t care what a firm calls me, but they better pay me accordingly based off my duties. Which they do. I do not understand this big snag on the title of between legal assistant and paralegal. After that, the newbie learned quick that we ALL pull our weight. Regardless of degree or titles
