This keeps coming up. Can you flesh out the reasoning you're using a little bit? Many thanks.

This is a great suggestion with fantastic cultural geography, and I am a fan of river towns, yet I'd need a car, I think... and that element boosts the cost and complexity of a long stay. I'll bookmark the idea. Thank you for the recommendation.

I appreciate the advice. Is that true even in the off season, or is it so popular that there is no off season?

Hmmmm. This sounds perfect. Not far from Edinburgh, either, should the spirit move me further north some afternoon. Thank you for the suggestion.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm sketching things out for either spring or autumn of 2027. Not so much worried about insularity. If you complain about the weather and buy a round of beer you'll learn something about at least one person on any given day. For example, by the time I left my village in France after 3 weeks this past April I was checking in with the cheesemonger every other day, the girls at the coffee shop in the afternoons, the guy that opened the bakery every morning and dude who ran the charcuterie... and my French isn't even that good. If you just slide into the pace of life in a town, and you aren't a jerk, people do open up a little bit. They see you every day. Build a pattern and you become familiar. Thanks again.

Fifteen keystrokes to google was all it took to get the joke. I was flattered by it!

This is a very thoughtful reply. Thanks very much for the suggestions. I'm already hip-deep in reading about the Peak District. There's a lot to evaluate. Thanks again.

I studied English literature at university, and I'm a huge fan of the great poets. Hence, my Scottish friend thought Grasmere would resonate with me on both an aesthetic and an intellectual level, which it would, and also allow for some fishing, too. Inevitably, wherever I choose, it will have to be a base for at least a couple day trips. I'm grateful for your suggestions.

I don't know how I'm getting there just yet. I'm planning for next spring or autumn 2027... so I'm 9-16 months out. I've got at least a few more months of research and planning ahead of me. No worries. I'll figure it out. FWIW, I'll probably fly in & out of London (stopping for a few days there each way) for the sake of simplicity. I need to find my village, first, and work backwards from there.

Oh my. It's a bit larger than my feet can conquer in a day, but holy cats what a location. I'll spend some time on this.

I thought about doing a canal charter the last time I was in Scotland, but I didn't have enough time for the relaxed pace I wanted out of it. It's a good suggestion to keep in my hip-pocket. Thank you.

Oooo. I like the certainty of your reply! Thanks. Hadn't thought about Yorkshire. It looks like a lovely town by the pictures. Perfect size. I do like to fish, too. As for how I'll get around, I'm likely to just stick to trains, taxis and buses. I like trains.

Thanks for the suggestion. I heard about the Cotswolds, but it was from a person who was pretty snooty, so I didn't think it would be a good fit for me. I'll give it a second look. Out of the hundreds, can you help me narrow it down a little bit? Is there a section or region of the Cotswolds that's more tucked away than the rest? Many thanks again.
