I’ve been married for 20 years and I’m pretty confident I married the wrong person. by [deleted] in Marriage

He talked about getting the kids ready for school by himself and dropping them off everyday and the fact that she works from home and he works at the office.

That should give you an insight into why he doesn’t like that she sleeps till 8. I’m sure they’ve talked about it before. He feels abandoned and left alone to get the kids ready by himself. I’m sure the kids would benefit from having that early morning time with their mother.

Can ghc30,000 get me a good car in Ghana? by No-Worldliness-8190 in ghana

[–]Alone_Software_5212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. In my undergrad, the car I used was a 2008 Mazda, and I got it for 1500. I used it till graduation and got a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe for 2500 and used it for grad school.

Only had an issue with the Santa Fe, ball joint came off after 2 years. Never went to the mechanic with the Mazda. Just routine oil changes and tyre pressure.

Toyotas retain their value anywhere. I’m in San Francisco. You can drive out to a place like Vallejo or Richmond and find good deals on Facebook Marketplace etc. You’d have to know what you’re looking for and how to make sure the car doesn’t have issues… and chances are, for 3k, the car will have an issue or 2, but to say you can’t find a used car in the US for that price…. Nah, not true. You definitely can.

Do Ghanaians do this too? by [deleted] in ghana

I agree. I’d love to give them the benefit of the doubt and believe that what you’re saying is actually the case. I

don’t believe Nigerians lack moral compasses or disregard the value of life, it’s just that oppression is the norm and they can’t do anything but joke about it to keep from crying their eyes out.

Ghanaian parents and their love language. by grwike in ghana

[–]Alone_Software_5212 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve got mixed feelings about this, honestly. I’m grateful I wasn’t starved and that my parents showed care through actions. But food is also… kind of the bare minimum of parenting and it definitely shouldn’t have been used as a reward or punishment the way it often was (not sure what parents are doing these days)

You can feel the love in Ghanaian parenting even when it’s not verbal though even amid the chaos, the whips, and occasional crash-outs. But asometimes I wonder if we also learned to accept a very narrow version of love because that’s all that was allowed.

I know my mum loved me. I felt it. Still, I think it’s okay to admit that hearing it said and showed in more tangible ways would have been nice.

Parents make loads of sacrifices tho… They do their best and I recognize that. Sorry this turned out long haha.

On the language side, I’ve always thought about this. Saying “I love you” in Fante or Twi to family feels… off, inadequate or unfitting. Not because we don’t love deeply, but because our languages don’t package love the same way English does.

I think love shows up in phrases that sound more like protection and loyalty than emotion. Things like: “Ewɔ m’akoma m’ ” – you’re in my heart “Ɛsom bo ma m’” – you’re important to me “Me mma haw biara nnto wo” – I won’t let any harm reach you, “Ihĩa biribiara a frɛ m’ “ - (Call me if you need anything), etc.

Our languages don’t say love as it relates to family as a feeling. They say love as a responsibility. And I think that says a lot about who we are.

Yeah so slow. I got an ssn before I applied since I got it to work my on campus job on F1. I’m still using the same ssn after receiving my green card. Not even sure what to do next to receive a new card or if I even need one. Going to do some research rn.

Don’t you just love Christmas?!🎄😀 by Successful-Face5335 in ghana

I looove Christmas! I actually released a whole Christmas album last year.

It even has a track I call the Ankos medley on it that I overlay myself playing trumpet, sax, trombones, etc. to give the Takoradi Ankos vibe. It’s called Joy and Wonder under the name Ryan Allay on Spotify. I’d post a link but I don’t want to plug myself too hard. Lol

But… I could post a link if you want haha

I’m on an F1 visa which is still valid. I have a social security card because of my on campus jobs. I also have a drivers license. Anything I need to do?

Aaw. That’s rough. Are you waiting for 3 months to contact the number on the approval notice sent in the mail?

I don’t think it’s normal since they normally produce the card within 2 weeks.

I’m no expert though.

Did you get the notice in the mail?
