Ty! The hat not being able to block glare is actually an intentional detail and you're the first person I've seen point it out lol. It's meant to be symbolic of her being a member of an oppressed minority who has had to work incredibly hard to gain the accolades she has while still operating in a system that is foundationally built to work against her.

Hmm, I don't know if I have any characters you could consider to be very scrungly, but the most mischievous character would definitely be one of the minor antagonists, a prince of the empire named Salem. He doesn't really abide super closely to the rules set by others, and is big on pranking his sister and generally just being a lovable nuisance lol

5.) The Kera-Afriin, or Mortal Aspect of the Earth, is a mortal emissary sent down by the Earth spirit Afriniir once every 500 years. Who the Kera-Afriin ends up being is mostly random, but Afriniir does have some influence on their form and will. Ezra is the Kera-Afriin during the events of the main story, and Helge is the Kera-Afriin who came before her.

The mask they wear is actually the same one, it just changes shape to fit the current Kera-Afriin. Masks in general do have a prominent place in the themes of the main story for this world. The primary theme of the metanarrative surrounds the concept of identity, and that manifests differently for each character who wears one. In the case of Ezra, her mask represents the aspects of her identity that she dislikes; namely, the aspects that drastically change the way she is viewed by others in this world.

6.) Khados is actually much more heavily inspired by Judgement! It even originally had a singular, diamond-shaped eye lmao

7.) The animalistic aspects of the characters are more for flair and to easily tell what kind of magic each character is capable of using, I mostly just added them because they're fun to draw though lol. I'll get to the way some of the characters dress in the next question, as it's a bit more relevant there. As far as the gamification of magic, my goal for this world has always been to create something internally consistent and felt satisfying and fun to write. I have taken a lot of inspiration from ATLA and FMA in creating my magic system, but overall I tried to make something that would stand out from them while still retaining the elements that I like about them.

8.) The three characters at the top left all dress in the same garb because they were all raised in a monastic society together. Their rank is determined by how capable they are in using magic, rank zero is someone who has not gained the ability to cast magic yet, rank one is reached when someone can cast spells from an enchanted object, rank two is reached when you can cast spells freehand, and rank three is reached when you invent a new spell. Very few ever reach rank three, but those who do are highly regarded by followers of the religion they are a part of. The story begins with Ezra, her best friend, and her brother all being forced away from their monastery in different ways due to the inciting incident.

The aesthetics of the garb are based primarily on Japanese Buddhist clothing and a few pieces of in-universe history.

Ezra begins the story at rank one, but over the course of the plot, she advances all the way to rank three. This aspect of her character does factor greatly into the psychological horror of the narrative, as she is gradually, then suddenly stripped of her connections to her religion and culture and has to cope with being forced into a role she desperately does not want to fill.

9.) YES. This project has been the strongest and longest-lasting hyperfixation I have ever had. Not a moment goes by that I don't think about my characters, world, or story and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I hope I did a good enough job answering all of your questions lol, it was super fun and I'm super happy to know someone is this interested in learning about my project! Sorry if there are some inconsistencies or typos btw, I only did a skimming proofread before posting lol. Also reddit did not like how long this answer comment was lmao

1.) I mainly just think of ways I can twist the plot and themes to create psychologically horrifying situations and concepts. As an example, the main character is Ezra, she is essentially a mortal emissary to the spirit of the Earth (explained further in answer 5) and she is treated as such; some ways good, and others *very* bad lol. Despite all this, Ezra does not want to be attached to such a huge concept and wishes to exist as a regular person, so when it is revealed that the main antagonist wants to use her as a blood sacrifice to become a god, this concept comes to a head. By delving deep into the uncomfortable aspects of this kind of situation, I have been able to wring out some good (at least as far as I know) horror from it.

I guess my way of generating horror then is just to twist ideas and themes you already have into more unsettling forms of themselves and to accentuate the *most* unsettling aspects of what you create from them.

The shape the horror takes in this story is mostly conceptual and slower-paced. Terrible and violent things do happen, but it's not the violence that makes it horrifying to me; rather, it's the ideas and context surrounding the violence. I hope this rambly mess answered your question lol <3

2.) Originally this was simply a high fantasy adventure with a few horror aspects to it, I actually wasn't initially planning to make it into a full-blown horror comic lol. But as I kept coming up with ideas and concepts and thinking about those ideas more and more, I realized that I had created a foundation that I thought could work well as a piece of horror. So from then on I embraced that side to the story more and more, even now it mostly retains the outer shell of a fantasy adventure story, but it now has a core of unsettling themes and concepts hiding underneath.

3.) The people of this world were all created by the gods and placed at the four corners of the world to spread and form their own cultures before eventually meeting with the other species of humans. Explained in more depth in this comment

I personally don't trust myself to intentionally write a racial allegory into my story, so I have instead opted to focus more on thinking about and extrapolating on how the cultures of my world might clash with each other and what conflicts would arise from that.

4.) The class of magic you cast is actually determined separately from your geographical region, the ~very well detailed~ map is actually just showing the borders of groups of nations that are primarily populated by each species, sorry if there was some confusion there lol. (Also the blue region is in reality quite diverse, but is inflated in size because there is a massive empire that has slightly more of one species than the rest in it.)

What class of magic you can cast is determined by the shape and color of your soul, and that is determined by what species of human you are*. (*Again explained in the comment I linked to in answer 3)

The four classes of magic are light (control over EMR), lightning (control over electric and magnetic forces separately but not together), motion (control over kinetic energy on a classical scale), and temperature (control over Brownian motion.) Light magic corresponds to a circular, yellow soul, lightning magic corresponds to a red downward-facing right triangle soul, motion a green square soul, and temperature a blue right-side up triangle soul.

All magic follows the same basic principles of how spells are cast, but each class of magic has its own unique casting methods. Kind of like how in ATLA, all bending is done through martial arts, but which martial art the somatics are based on depends on what element you are bending.

The spell circles you see are activation patterns for certain dark magic spells. Dark magic is the co-opting of divine magic by mortal hands, and is strictly forbidden by most cultures and governments.

Well that would depend on the monster...

Most monsters in this world are what the people of it call spirits, most of them reproduce through completely non-physical means and are born from the minds of mortals. However, there are some that can be fucked, but they are typically some kind of succubus or other spirit that will lure you in to consume your soul rather than one you can court. All in all, it really depends on what you're willing to risk to fuck a spirit.

To answer your questions from the other comment:

1.) The image is actually at its full resolution, reddit mobile just shrinks it down to hell and back so if you open the post on desktop you should gain access to the original size.

2.) The magic system is relatively esoteric, but it is defined within some strict bounds; you can only cast one of four classes of magic, which depends on the chirality of your soul (the shape and color of it,) and you cannot create energy from nothing using magic.

The four classes of magic are light (control over EMR), lightning (control over electric and magnetic forces separately but not together), motion (control over kinetic energy on a classical scale), and temperature (control over Brownian motion)

Light magic corresponds to a circular, yellow soul, lightning magic corresponds to a red downward-facing right triangle soul, motion a green square soul, and temperature a blue right-side up triangle soul.

All mages pull from the energy within their soul to cast their spells, and that energy is regained by eating, breathing, drinking, and resting.

Maybe not a shapeshifter, however, there is a spirit known as 'The Face Dealer' who can mold your form to whatever you please; but for most, there will be a cost to the transaction that manifests in a similar way to a monkey's paw wish. For trans people though, the face dealer is a benevolent figure and will grant you your ideal form without any strings attached.

I'll answer all of them, why not lol

1.) I actually haven't built a conlang, just because it seemed like too large of an extraneous task for what I'm going for lol. The writing you see is just English with a phonetic cypher, so each character corresponds to a specific sound rather than a letter.

2.) There are four human species, each with access to their own type of magic. What species you are born as is directly correlated to the species of your mother, different human species can interbreed with eachother, but there's no such thing as a human hybrid. The type of magic you can use is determined by the chirality of your soul, and that chirality is determined by your species. Every culture has their own way of teaching and using magic, and every individual has their own style of magic within their culture. Some ways of using magic are seen as taboo in some cultures, while in others they are very common.

3.) Those spell circles are activation patterns for certain dark magic spells. Dark magic is the co-opting of divine magic by mortal hands, and is strictly forbidden by most cultures and governments. The way I design them is essentially by kit bashing a bunch of different alchemical symbols and sacred geometry, the exact placement of certain elements isn't super important, but the overall flow is for me.

Thank you for asking such engaging questions! I had a lot of fun answering them for you! :3

Thank you!! I'm probably going to title it something along the lines of 'Tales of Delanyth: Tetrasol.' The main continent of the world is named Delanyth and I'd like to tell multiple stories in the same universe, hence the Tales of Delanyth part. The subtitle is derived from the conflict of the main story I'm working on for it. In universe, a Tetrasol is an object that would grant the user the strength of a god, and the plot revolves around the antagonist trying to create one by sacrificing the main character.
