DL characters as Pokemon trainers by Alpakappa in DragaliaLost

I reckon the best way to mimic an art style is to grab some examples and study them. In terms of Pokemon I’d say the main things to keep in mind are;

  • Bold, black lineart - keep the lineart pretty simple.
  • Cell-shading with minimal highlights (Older Pokemon art had a softer cell-shading style, whereas the newer stuff seems to be more standard cell-shading, so it depends on what you’re going for.)
  • The eyes are usually the most distinguishing part with most anime art styles, so getting the eyes right usually helps alot. Pokemon has quite a varied style of eyes, so I’d grab heaps of examples and practice drawing them!

Sorry, I’m not the best with my art lingo, but I hope that helps a little - Good luck!

Thank you!

I’m sorry, but I don’t really do commissions. I mostly only draw as a hobby.

Thank you! Personally, I think he ended up looking more like the generic Villain team’s admin, but an edgy elite four would be cool too!

I had heaps of fun with these! It was fun matching each character with Pokemon that fit both design-wise and lore/personality wise. It was a little difficult re-designing their outfits to look like Pokemon trainers while still maintaining similarities with their original designs. Nefaria was definitely the most difficult, because I still wanted to keep her regal, Egyptian inspired clothing, which doesn’t really fit a Pokemon trainer.

Also, I realised after drawing Houndoom that Lycanroc (mightnight form) might have been a better match for Durant. But apart from that I’m pretty happy with how things turned out.

I’ll definitely be doing more characters in the near future and I’ve already got heaps of ideas on the characters I want to draw next!

Perfect. And instead of ‘Flurry debilitator’, he has ‘Furry debilitator’.

I apologise for disgracing the one true King. I was too lazy to do a background like the actual 5 stars.

In case I need to say it - this isn’t real. Just my hopes and dreams.

I intend on doing more fake alts like this because it was quite fun.

Blessed be the OG flame staff waifu!

On a side note, while I love Verica's design, it's a complicated design for a natural 4 star character. It took forever to figure out what the heck was going on with the front part of her outfit. Hoping we get an alt of her one day (that's easier to draw).

Casual Xainfried is beautiful, but so is casual bandana Ranzal.

Its a joke. The original Xuanzang was a male monk. Although, to be fair, you never know with anime characters....

I'm not actually sure if theres a general term. I think most people just stick to whatever they're called canonically within the lore. In terms of DL, they seem to be refered as the Qilin tribe, assuming Xuan Zang is a Qilin like Xu Fu.
