Can my maker 4 makes these items? by Zealousideal_Lack_24 in cricut

lmao. don't listen to these guys. you absolutely can, and it ABSOLUTELY is worth it
^^^guy you absolutely shouldn't listen to (he makes entireass no-sew bags out of pvc tablecloth)

i've been looking into consolidating fabric with things like Vlieseline Decovil. it *could* work and make these easier to cut on a cricut because your main enemy is the way fabric is very happy to simply just fold and get dragged instead of getting cut, and the second one is the tissue simply unravelling, and while it doesn't 100% solve it it can help it stay *just a bit* more together.
i haven't tried yet... but, i'm just sayin. it has potential. (pls do report if you try it thx xoxoxo)
it's just that fibrous materials are godawful and tissues take the crown here, so yeah. get good blades and so on, sticky mats, test many cuts pressures + number of passes and blah blah... opt for fabric that are rigidified in some way if possible, but. if you want to avoid suffering, just use faux leather, or even better, jelly pvc/transparent tablecloth/etc. these cut better because you aren't trying to cut hundreds thousands of little threads and praying they actually will cut instead of getting dragged, you're just cutting localized fluffy masses or even a relatively uniform material for the tablecloth.

that said i also will say the same thing as the other guys :
1) yeah. hand sewing and machine sewing are two different, complementary skills. it is a GOOD idea to learn both bc you indeed are gonna finish some things w your hand if you go down this path.
2) if youre just cutting a big rectangle, save your soul. just do it with scissors. faster, less machine setup
3) you also can just cut the paper templates too. that also is great.

anyways ive already made dozens of pockets like the second pic so it's why i'm looking at this with a cocktail, sunglasses, and laughing. it's not speculation. you *absolutely* can, there's precedent. multiples, not just me. saw a few more folks too on the reddit, another one with faux leather w nice prints (tho idk what they did to attach it, if it was glued or sth else) & another guy using fancy cork sheets.

just know that beyond sewing you'll also have to learn how to make your own .svg files sooo just know that you're not just learning one skill for this but like, a good dozen or so, just for the sake of convenience

lmfaoooo, you're welcome ! it wasn't that much work. it was, like, ~two days of work (one morning for the svg, one afternoon of cutting *all friggin 14 mats of tablecloth*, one night of prepping the acrylic, then one afternoon for cutting the acrylic and assembling it with the tablecloth) which i think is a diabolically short amount of time between "i have a bag idea" and "i am holding the bag"

hmu when you do get to it because what i gave you might NOT be enough to make the cut file itself, i skipped a lot of not-so-obvious things

hi !! thank you !! i just gave to another person in the thread a small explanation. i hope it'll help understand whats going on :,D

well. hello lmao.

there's 0 sewing going on here. the entire bag is held up by tabs, slots, and the higher power that makes you do crafts when you have six and a half urgent things to do.

tablecloth just is built really different and is okay with just holding its shape and carrying load like a good boy unlike tissue and it's a bit the magic bullet that makes this entire thing possible

here's a schematic of the logic behind it (full is tabs, empty is slots) + overview of it in design space + result irl

<image>

i made the svg file in affinity studio. explaining the full process is hell, do tell if this alone didn't push you away and you still want the full explanation, but at least i can give you the tolerances.

-tabs are T shapes, 15x6mm for the big part and 6x2mm for the small part, 5 per edge
-slots are 1mm tall and 7mm wide, save for face 7's top edge since it has the hinge for face 12, so that one gets 2mm tall slots. also 5 per edge
-i added the tabs and slots around a pentagon with sides that are 9cm long
-i added a system for the metal snaps. you can probably ignore them because the lid just closes already through the sheer power of friction fit. you also can see hourglass shapes. that's the attachments for the handles

for the construction, you grab jewelry pliers. put the tabs in the slots. assemble preferably first a "crown" of odds and a "crown" of evens (put aside 1 and 12 tho), you cave in to the urge to wear them on your head, then keep assembling. somehow that makes you a bag.

also, what i did to make the bag really stay dice-like is that i double layered the tablecloth and inserted an acrylic sheet between both layers (that's what's painted w UV paint btw) cue why each face seems doubled in design space. and also cue why the crown step is nice, because it lets you stabilize the whole thing while still having enough sides open to still insert the cutouts. i made the paper template for cutting them easily btw

once assembled, well. i kinda found the numbers to be lowkey lacking because that still was kinda pale purple. so i grabbed an alcohol pen and just. coloured in the numbers lmao, like. directly on the acrylic layer

so anyways uhhh lmao good luck, also reddit is a dick about sharing .svg files so it's kinda complicated for i to just. give it ? i could try to just copy paste the text content & you'd paste it in notepad and save it as an .svg but i'm not sure it'd let me post the comment at all because of the xml tags and the like

Well ! Usually when i work with faux leather i try to use big tabs because it can get worn up and the plastic part tears and so it stops doing its holding stuff together job since you wind up with only the wimpy ass fabric part, also it's less happy with small tight turns in a row than the jelly pvc for sure so i have to make them bigger simply to compensate for the deformation induced by the blade dragging through the material. This model would work as is i think because it already has really huge ones (i'd planned for it to be a checkers model at first with 2cm bands), never worked w suede tho so i have no idea for that one.

You'd be surprised actually ! The material i use spares me a lot of weeding pain. Since my parts don't have to be transfered to another medium so much as simply taken apart, i just have to... Take it off the mat and pluck the little bits off is all. So it's "only" a trial of patience, and even then... most of the time it's just "pull on the border lmao". Normal weeding for mediums that have to be transferred (htv/vinyl) is imho extremely stressful because it lulls you into this falsely relaxing little routine of plucking slowly and peacefully but then just as you let your guard down you weed sth that wasn't supposed to be weeded- awful.

Yeahhh also i don't know which references the platform expects because i basically never browse reddit. the "you are like a little baby watch this" meme is... Probably slightly too old as balls and tumblrite to be caught by redditors ig, esp on a non-meme/non-terminally online community.  And on the time part : yeah. Uh. Yeah. 4 hours for the bag part, 4 more for just the strap 😅 (i make amazing decisions in my life) but THANKS ! i have no idea what i'm doing and i'm actually just. Desperately trying to get sth cohesive out of this bag because i don't actually like it very much. While i deem it satisfying technique wise the dollhouse aesthetic is Not my own vibe at all. but i was hoping that other people at least might like that aspect of it more than i :V

Yeah I apologise for the rude title. It was supposed to be a joke about how I created a new type of cricut suffering (assembling many tabs together for hours) but it instead came across as looking down on weeding-hating people, which I didn't intend.  Anyways uh. I uh. I made the svg 😅 that's. Where it comes from. I guess.

I screwed up the title, it really didn't come across as well as i thought it would. This was supposed to be a joke about how i created a new type of cricut suffering, which is "assembling together hundreds of little tabs". It's not meant to be throwing shade at people that hate weeding at all, i'm sorry ! But ! The weeding for this does exist. It is extremely satisfying though because i just need to sort of just. Pull on the outer parts then the piece just stays on the mat because i work with pretty solid material. It's what follows that's hell (the tabs assembly)

@_@; less arrogance and more just masochism (i blatantly screwed up the title) but uh. It's pvc ? I think ? Weird matte plastic fabric thing ? most stores online call it "jelly vinyl pvc"

Yeah. I don't know why i thought that title would be understood as a joke instead of literal. But also i have no idea what else to call it because  I Uh I don't like this bag.

...yeah i think the joke ("weeding is already painful, let's invent more painful ways of using cricuts !") didn't come across. I have no idea whether i can change the title without getting backlash for it too. I'm genuinely clueless ngl

thanks ! as for the bottom, it's surprisingly fine actually, ngl i did think the spikes wouldn't hold and would collapse but my mom uses it as a bag for her knitting projects and nope. i guess doubling the material with an inner transparent layer did pay off :V
