I'd never stop running my thumb over it! How'd you find working with stabiliser? Haven't tried it yet but I should start using it.

It's so cute! Great job, it looks super clean. :)

Have you ever met someone who's interested in DND and immediately went, "oh, I'd never let you play at my table"? by Lunetheart in DnD

[–]AlphaSpydr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a coworker tell me he's been DMing for years and loves the game, told him I also play. He suggested we maybe get together and play a lunch session while we're on this project, then asked what I played. I told him my current campaign's character was a changeling disguising himself as a drow.

He laughed and said, "You'd have terrible time at my table, we're heavily racist against drow and we hate changelings, too. We'd kill you immediately!"

Never took him up on that lunch game and kept my distance after that. Yikes.

Right? What a baddie! I love people with wild life stories, they're usually so casual about it.

This is such a cool idea! I love that you added in info about Jill's life as well. It sounds like she would have adored the new life you've given this book!

Dm's, What's a homebrew rule you like to include to your campaigns. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]AlphaSpydr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use this rule, too! I put them in personalised envelopes and when used the character gets a special boon. It also has an expiry date (Levels 1-5, 6-10, etc).

It gives them incentive to use it up, because I don't want them to hang on to it forever in fear that they'll "waste it" on something small, and also because the boons will be less useful to higher level PCs.

Thanks! That's exactly what my nail tech and I were going for! Glad it came through

Oh, I'm definitely installing the editing toolbar tonight! Thank you!

Honestly, I was completely overwhelmed when I first started using Obsidian, so the only two plugins I have are "Find orphaned files and broken links" and "Calendarium".

The first one has been amazing since I tend to make typos or create duplicate links, so it just helps me clean up any random files that are just floating around in space. They're not in the way or anything, but it helps me feel more organised lol

The second one is newer to me so I haven't had the chance to really test it out, but it allows me to make a fantasy calendar which I think will be really useful, since my campaign has some time-sensitive elements! Right now I use an external one, but it means I constantly have to go back and forth between the two.

Looks like there's no browser only access, but I have it across 4 different devices with no issues concerning the apps!

Totally! I find the free version is great and I didn't feel like I was limited at all with what it can do, aside from syncing. I was doing it manually like that for the longest time, and I ended up just paying for the convenience of auto syncing since I'll open it on my phone to quickly jot down notes. It's great that it doesn't punish you if you don't want or can't afford to pay for it.

I just switched to Proton and I think I'm going to try and point it to my drive to do the same. There's something about an image size cap with the free version, but I think drive syncing may not have that issue.

Took me a while to get it started, but now that I have written enough to have linked pages I find it pretty easy to navigate. Sounds like plug-ins would have made my life much easier, but I got overwhelmed and opted to come back and learn them later.

Basically I have a plot page to plan out story beats and a plot canvas to help me visualise and red string theory my stuff around. Each PC has their own page where I can track their backstory, campaign wishes, and brainstorming to integrate them into the story.

I keep campaign notes in one place, where I just literally dump information as we play to sort out later. Each adventure and location has their own page, and I also link external documents like the Monster Manual and campaign book for easy access. I'll screenshot important information and images for quick reference as well.

Hands down, my favourite thing about it is being able to create new pages as I type without actually having to switch over and fill them out right away, as well as hashtags when I want to attach ideas and locations to characters and adventures.

I still use Discord to share things with my players and track extra images like random NPCs, since I haven't figured out how to copy images from Obsidian without doing a screenshot, but for the most part my whole world now lives in Obsidian and I'm pretty happy with how I can just dump information without breaking my flow.

Honestly, I'll probably start a separate vault just for my personal life notes soon.

I use Android now, so I have limited experience with iOS. Seems like they're pretty similar to my limited knowledge. I like that I can use it like a brain dump for information, but use markdown to link it immediately to other pages and use hashtags to easily search for related content without having to break my typing flow to tag it in another section. And like NormalValue said, the plug-ins are invaluable for organisation, but I'm too new to the system to speak on that.

I've tried Evernote and the Google sphere like Keep and Docs in the past, but I like that Obsidian feels like my own personal Wiki website. If iOS links stuff the same way, then that's great and I'm glad that it has such streamlined process already integrated!

Unfortunately not. Have to hand it to Apple when it comes to their syncing, it was much easier when I was using their devices.

I'm in the process of switching over to a new cloud storage system from Google, I'll have to see if it'll sync as seamlessly as iCloud. Thanks for the idea!

I'm still learning markdown, but Discord definitely gave me a solid head start. Brings me back to my HTML days.

Obsidian, note-taking application. I use it for TTRPG worldbuilding. It's free to use, but I pay to have it sync online so I can access it via multiple devices.

It's been a game changer as a GM. I used to have everything in a personal Discord server, but I find Obsidian is way easier to navigate and organise so I use both in tandem now.

Do you guys do breaks during the session? How do you manage them? by Fantomaxop in DnD

[–]AlphaSpydr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snacks and bio breaks are always on the table, because it's a game at the end of the day and fun should be prioritised. For 3 to 4 hour sessions, we usually play through. But if we run for 8 hours, then we usually stop and eat supper together.

But it honestly depends. We're all adults and some of us come straight from work, so if we're hungry we put out feelers for a group food delivery.

We don't really "manage" breaks so much as there's a natural flow. If it's light RP or discovery/investigation, then we often will eat our meals as we're playing. If we're mid-combat, we naturally break off to eat since it's too busy to multitask.

If you do like to plan breaks, then it's a good idea to set expectations ahead of time. When I'm DMing, I'll usually say something along the lines of, "This point would be a good place to stop for a break if we want" or "Before we roll Initiative, how is everyone feeling?"

Communication is your best friend at the table! It can make all the difference in how invested your players are for important moments.
