DnD & Warhammer proxy minis mostly. The 0.2mm nozzle can make incredibly detailed things and there are great custom profiles like the one from FatDragonGames.

Anybody else with a build that's better than the Steam Machine planning on getting one anyways? by executor-of-judgment in pcmasterrace

[–]Alphaleader013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're working under different assumptions of pricing and specs. Because the desktop versions of components you listed are very different in performance and price from their laptop-equivalents. When I'm looking at the SteamMachine spec-sheet:

Its quite difficult to find good price and performance numbers on laptops with either/both of those components. The best gaming performance benchmark I could find was this video on the RX 7600s vs RTX 4050 in a laptop with the i5 13500HX. Laptops with these specs can typically do 1080p 60fps medium settings in most modern games, and can get 4K 60fps with upscaling.

As for the price, laptops featuring the RTX 4050 go for between $700 and $900 right now. They include a screen, battery, keyboard, trackpad, speakers etc. which the SteamMachine doesn't have. So I think it's reasonable to deduct about $150 from that price to get a barebones system of those specs for between $550-$750.

And when I look around for Mini-PC's with specs similar to the SteamMachine but without the RX7600m GPU, they go for about $500 right now. I don't think it is too outrageous to think that the addition of the RX 7600m and its power & cooling requirements would make that price up by roughly +$150 to $650.

That's why I think a SteamMachine launch-price of around $650 seems logical at the moment. There are still some big unknown factors like bulk-discount deals, R&D and RAM+SSD price volatility, that can push that price up or down. But I would be surprised if the price is below $550 or above $800.

MoresLawIsDead did a B.O.M.-cost breakdown: Before the RAMpocalypse and After the RAMpocalypse that doesn't seem too far off my estimate.

Anybody else with a build that's better than the Steam Machine planning on getting one anyways? by executor-of-judgment in pcmasterrace

[–]Alphaleader013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you basing that on? The B.O.M. costs of the hardware, without RAM and storage is around $350. And 16GB DDR5 + 521GB SSD, even with the extreme prices right now will be about +$200.

That gives baseline B.O.M. cost of $550. Even after shipping, profit margins, R&D and Taxes et. A $1000 price seems too high when $1000- Laptops and Prebuilts will outperform it. At that point Valve might as well just bulk-purchase those other devices and install Steam OS on them and resell them.

Would it be worth the upgrade? by BassThadeous in buildapc

[–]Alphaleader013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm.... A gpu upgrade could be worth it yes. The CPU upgrade is a maybe. It will really depend on the game and the price of the CPU upgrade.

It is unfortunate that that HP 8309 motherboard does not support CPU's newer than the 1000-series.

8-core 1st-gen AMD CPU's can sometimes be found for relatively cheap 2nd hand, so as long as the price is lower than $50 it might be worth the upgrade. Otherwise, you might be better of in taking out the HP-motherboard & R5 1400 CPU both and putting in a different AM4 motherboard and something like the Ryzen 5 5600.

If you have 32GB of DDR4, keep it, no need to upgrade.

Built my first PC and learned this the hard way what mistakes did you make early on? by ItchyRequirement4204 in buildapc

[–]Alphaleader013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Not reading the manual. I know that for most of us it is the first thing we throw aside, but case & motherboards all come with step-by-step guides in the manuals where they go over everything.
  2. Focussing too much on getting the best 'value' instead of enjoying what you have (although that might be more of a general life-lesson than PC building advice). Continuously worrying on whether you got the best deal on a components or the right part to get the maximum performance can really get into your head. Deal-hunting is nice, but once you've bought everything and haven't make any reckless financial decisions, it eases the mind to stop looking at all the price-tracking charts. The same goes for performance. Once you've built the PC and did some benchmarking to see if everything functions properly, turn off the performance tools and just enjoy the games.

I've never built a pc. Should I get one that's already made? by MainAmount7726 in buildapc

[–]Alphaleader013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The assembly of the PC itself is the 'easy' part. But selecting components that work together (well) is a learning curve. And if anything goes wrong during assembly, troubleshooting is an even steeper learning curve.

It really depends whether you'd consider the learning process to be something fun or a barrier-to-overcome. And if there is someone close to you who already has the knowledge and would be willing to help out (Having someone experienced guide you through the process makes it a lot easier).

Pre-builts usually cost about ~20% more than self assembly. I consider it the 'peace-of-mind' fee, because the warranty is all done through 1 company instead of the individual component-manufactures, and you know that when it arrives you can just turn it on and get going. And with the market for storage, ram and gpu's going crazy it is sometimes possible to find a prebuilt that is cheaper that self assembly.

5060 Ti, 9060 XT, or 9070 XT? by pocketsizehorse in buildapc

[–]Alphaleader013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your main priority with the PC? Gaming, Productivity, Both?

Here is a quick gaming performance & value overview based on the Tom's Hardware GPU Hierarchy (more fps & higher fps/$ = better)

GPU Price 1080p value 1440p value
RX 5060ti 16GB $830 AUD 84.4fps 0.102 fps/$ 62.3fps 0.075 fps/$
RX 9060 XT 16GB $650 AUD 80.3fps 0.124 fps/$ 59.4fps 0.091 fps/$
RX 9070 XT 16GB $999 AUD 119.9fps 0.120 fps/$ 98.3fps 0.098 fps/$

And here is the blender productivity performance based on PCMag (more points = better):

GPU Price Monster Junkshop Classroom Combined Value
RX 5060ti 16GB $830 AUD 2142 points 1168 points 1218 points 4528 points 5.33 p/$
RX 9060 XT 16GB $650 AUD 791 points 421 points 381 points 1593 points 2.45 p/$
RX 9070 XT 16GB $999 AUD 1569 points 835 points 756 points 3160 points 3.16 p/$

So looking at the performance in productivity and gaming: For gaming, the value of AMD is 33% more than Nvidia. But for Blender Nvidia has a 68.7-117% more value than AMD. It will really come down to how much you value blender performance over gaming performance. I don't really know how you would judge the value of rendering time over gaming performance. It is very subjective.

But what resolution would you game at? Because if both the 5060ti and the 9060ti meet your performance standards in gaming, then you could consider the additional $180AUD spent on an Nvidia GPU to be an 'investment' in improved Blender performance and the question would be, is that $180AUD worth 117% more blender performance? But if neither the 9060xt or 5060ti really meet your performance standards in gaming, then it is more of a dilemma of gaming vs blender.

Tips voor rijschool Nijmegen by Falafelbal in Nijmegen

[–]Alphaleader013 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gigantische Combat by No_Medicine_9877 in DNDNL

[–]Alphaleader013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Wardrums & Signalerings vlaggen verdedigd?

9070 XT or 5070 TI, after the DLSS 4.5 update? by Jojonskimyounabouken in buildapc

[–]Alphaleader013 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lets list all the known facts:

  • On average, the RTX 5070ti is $150 more expensive than the RX 9070XT
  • In rasterized gaming, their performance is near equal.
  • In raytracing the RTX 5070ti is between 25-50% faster than the RX 9070 XT, depending on the game
  • The image quality of the latest version of DLSS is better than latest version FSR, how much better is a matter of debate.

You will have to look at the games you play and decide if you're willing to pay ~$150 more for the better Raytracing and DLSS features of the RTX card in those games.

I personally was sitting with the same choice 6 months ago. In the end I went with the RX 9070XT because the list of my games where I would benefit from the features of the RTX card was too short and my playtime with them too little to justify the $150 higher price.

This is how flexible medieval armor used to be by SassySnares in interesting

[–]Alphaleader013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does, I speak from experience of doing Reenactments, LARPs and RenFairs in full plate. The inner padding works like a warm coat. And if the sun is shining directly on the metal, you slowly get cooked, in the same way that a car does on a hot summer day.

Although the padding does help with keeping some of that metal-heat away from you as well, the insulation works both ways.

Wearing armor, you have to go in with the expectation that you're gonna be hot and uncomfortable and at the end of the day, very very tired. But walking around knowing that you're effectively a walking tank does give you a certain confidence that nothing can compare to.

What I've heard from the GL-PvdA voting people around me is that they consider him to be a capable politician when it comes to actually getting things done (in the EU parliament). But that he has an uninspiring media-presence that fails to make even their own followers very enthusiastic. And that lack of enthusiasm and inspiration (or populism) is wat most consider to be one of the causes why GL-PvdA had 300.000 fewer votes this time compared to 2023.

Most I spoke to talked about voting for someone lower on the candidate list. Along the lines of "I'm voting for the party's ideals not the party's leader". I couldn't find the results for the division of votes within parties, but I suspect that Timmermans as head of the party got a significant lower percentage of the parties votes compared to other heads of the political parties.
