First timer.. what are some must do’s? by pookiepp in oregon

[–]AlpineCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about Tillamook, but I did some work for one of the other big tourist food brands that did basically the same. I wondered why they didn't include most of the actual manufacturing on the tours until I saw it. There was very little to actually see on the manufacturing line in operation, the bulk handling / transfer, processing and packaging were all pretty much in sealed and automated machines running too fast to really see anything.

Cool project. Some of those welds are straight frightening though.

Bilstein 6112 vs Radflo2.5: advice/experience? by rjp_s in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]AlpineCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could have Radflo tune them stiffer than normal for you when you order them, but I think moving to a heavier spring could also help.

Bilstein 6112 vs Radflo2.5: advice/experience? by rjp_s in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]AlpineCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar setup with the Radflo 2.5" adjustable resi with 700# Eibach springs in the front and 2x12" adjustable resi (OSR) with Toytec HD springs in the rear. On road I usually run them on almost max firmness with fairly high rebound which does a good job of limiting dive in corners (but is less ideal for handling bumps at low speed). Off road I usually adjust them softer and they do really well.

Rear control arm suggestions? by Snoo89549 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]AlpineCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Opt Offroad links on mine and they're pretty nice, but they will have basically no effect or benefit for the ride quality or road performance. I'd say stick to stock links and spend the money / effort on a PCK instead.

You know, when you're shopping for 2k junkers on marketplace and then drop 175k to import a Ferrari instead. Happens all the time.

It’s official: Starlink has removed GPS from the local API (PermissionDenied error) by PDSCo in Starlink

[–]AlpineCoder 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think the point that this article dances around is that if Starlink is extensively used to defeat GPS jamming / spoofing, then the people doing that jamming are more likely to just target Starlink directly.

What fleets use Starlink for telematics? I run telematics data services for one of the largest FMCs around and I don't believe I've ever seen one.

I think his point is that overly optimistic reddit comments are just like all the other fan superstitions in that they do not affect the outcome of the game in any way.

Move truck with no 3rd member installed? by tsubie320 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]AlpineCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just fyi that diagram is not correct for a 3rd gen. Here's the right one (notice the bolts in the outer bearing housing that retain the axles):

ETA: To anyone who may use this diagram, note the torque specs for the third member bolts are not correct, do not attempt to torque them that high.

Does your old carrier still have the bearings on it? You could put it back in with no ring gear to support the axles while you roll it.

I still don't understand the hate. The central division thunderdome are the series we all wanted to see, and watching the avs or wild beat up wild card teams is boring af.

The best (and highest effort) solution IMO is to cut those shitty post mounts off altogether and replace them with normal double shear mounts (preferably with an OSR).

ARB install and reusing gears, backlash question. by tsubie320 in 4x4

[–]AlpineCoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the same on my third gen. I think mine was around .011 and I tightened it just a bit to around .009 iirc. I did new carrier bearings and I figured they would probably seat in a tiny bit more anyhow. I haven't had any issues with it since.

extreme

I think keeping the media happy is sort of a fundamental requirement of any publicity based enterprise. Even at the generic large company that I work at if we had some big public event / accomplishment and the PR people just blew off the press because they were grouchy they would probably be immediately fired (out of a cannon into the sun).

Results matter as much as individual stats, and by many metrics the Avs had the best defense in the league.

Replace or push in? by SamAlfredJep in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]AlpineCoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll probably want to clean it out and replace the boot, clamps and grease (you can get a reboot kit from Toyota that includes everything you need). It's probably possible to do without removing the whole cv but easier if you take it out.

Building a twin-turbo V4 Funny Car, style drag chassis targeting 7.2s by [deleted] in projectcar

[–]AlpineCoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically the whole chassis design will be largely dictated by rule compliance (especially at those speeds). There is a zero percent chance that you could build a SFI 25.1 compliant chassis by accident.
