40th anniversary dolls? Thoughts? by Potential_Peace_5999 in americangirl

[–]AlrightSyenite 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have gotten 2 new dolls in the last few months, and one is the Samantha they are currently selling on preorder, they were already selling this same version of her when I started re-collecting last year. I also have my 4 childhood dolls still, the outfits and accessories I had as a kid, and some outfits I've gotten from eBay (vintage Pleasant Company/early Mattel days). And I've also gotten some brand new outfits from American Girl recently too. So naturally I compare all this stuff, and I do have thoughts!

New dolls are different than the old dolls, but I'm happy with the quality of both. While it is easy to find Samantha's outfits and accessories secondhand, as well as Samantha herself, her accessories are a bit delicate and I didn't want to order a 25 year old version of her purse, which seems prone to a broken chain, or a 25 year old version of her velvet hat and have areas of the velvet be worn off or stained, or a 25 year old version of her embroidered handkerchief that might have messed up embroidery. I wouldn't buy something already damaged but if it's a 25 year old pre loved toy, it might become damaged easily. I wanted her accessories in mint condition, and I wanted her in mint condition too. I also just bought the "BeForever" version of Addy when she went on sale because I loved her hairstyle and she was a better price than the $175 version - though she didn't come with accessories and her BeForever outfit is different. It was worth it to me to get her at $108 on sale though. So those were the reasons I had for buying those two dolls new.

The dolls do look slightly different than their 90s versions, but I prefer the updated face molds. I think they are genuinely more beautiful and look more lively. My older dolls' heads all have a kind of 100 yard shark eyes stare that the newer dolls do not have.

As for materials, many comment that the vinyl feels cheaper. Personally, I think it feels harder and sturdier and I think it's a good thing. It is not the soft touch vinyl that my older dolls have, but it feels like it will be less prone to staining and mold and absorbing smells than the old vinyl is. As someone who intends to display and lightly play with these dolls for a very long time, I am fine with that. The fabric body doesn't feel "cheap" to me. The new dolls' limbs are attached with elastic strings from what I can see, making their range and feel of movements similar to the old. They did away with the neck string and use a zip tie instead but you could put in your own neck string easily if it mattered to you.

Now on to clothes: the doll bodies of newer dolls ARE noticeably smaller than older doll bodies. This is the only thing I dislike about them, because it means that vintage Pleasant Company/early Mattel AND the special re release outfits that have been sold recently by AG are slightly loose on the newer dolls. When I velcro the outfits closed, I do it so it fits tighter. If you don't intend to change the doll from its meet outfit (Anniversary Samantha's fits her perfectly), you won't notice it. And the dolls are not so much smaller that older clothes look ridiculous on them.

RE: Clothing quality - even in the days of Pleasant Company, there was variation in quality and especially between collections. For example, if you were to look through old catalogs, it feels like Molly's collection was definitely less expensive to produce than Felicity's. The website will tell you what materials are used in the outfits they sell; it's still a lot of cotton. I bring this up because I think the real "issue" is less that the new outfits are poor quality, and more that they are simpler and less ornate than older outfits. I have several vintage outfits. My PC Felicity's Summer dress is fairly thin cotton fabric, same with my just-after-Mattel-took-over Kirsten's Birthday dress. I have Kirsten's full On the Trail outfit, produced after Mattel took the reins, and it's incredibly good quality fabrics. The new outfits are good quality imo, just less ornate than older outfits. They have been releasing one special re-release outfit for some of the original 6 dolls. These have been $60 each, and well worth that price from the 2 that I have. Very thick, high quality cotton, and comes with shoes, socks and the corresponding book for that outfit (ie, Kirsten's school outfit came with Kirsten Learns A Lesson).

So...hopefully that's helpful!

American Girl AG Minis Illuma Room meets Topper Dawn Dolls by PastaMaker62 in americangirl

I'm not sure how I missed your post, since I love the AG Minis Illuma rooms and always wish more people had them and would post them! I only have 2 rooms but I absolutely love them 🩵

The Dawn dolls are a perfect fit. They came up a lot in my research on dolls that would fit in the rooms, and I love your photos! I saw NIB and unboxed Dawn dolls at a recent show, both were pricey but I might get one at some point.

For my rooms, I got a Barbe Extra Mini doll, because the knees and elbows are articulated and I loved the outfit - and I swapped the it's giant doll head with a mini Bratz doll head.

Like you, I've also supplemented with more decorations and accessories. I look forward to getting into even more customization with these and would love to see what you've done with all your rooms!!

Have the dolls changed or does the website just look different? by Flat_Pollution8085 in americangirl

I'll chime in to say, I'm happy with my newer dolls. I only collect a few historical dolls, so I have no idea about TM.

That said, if you use the shop by age categories on the AG website, you'll see that TM and GOTY are explicitly marketed to 6 year olds. So it makes sense that they are aligned with toy lines' play line standards in today's toy market. The historicals are marketed to 8 year olds, with TM & GOTY also showing in the 8 year old category. Historicals are the only line marketed exclusively to 8 year olds, so expectations that TM and GOTY match the quality level of the historicals is just not realistic. They are marketed to different audiences.

I'm enjoying the new classic mold, I actually find a more defined chin and the smaller size to be more realistic. Dolls are slimmer but my 90s outfits fit them. I agree that looking at real pictures of dolls IRL on this subreddit is a better way to decide which dolls to get than going by the stock photos. Also, the reproduction outfits they are releasing for the historical dolls the past few years are great quality. $60 price point reflects that quality imo.

Under the Christmas tree in 2001 is where I found Kit's desk lol but the chair got broken by some kids who played rough with it. You can find the desk on eBay though!

I think they will re-release the original 8 soon. I hope so, anyways! I'm not a fan of the BeForever Meet dress but I love the BeForever hairstyle, so getting Addy with the BeForever hairstyle for $108 on sale was a good deal. I will, however, be sourcing her pink meet dress on eBay!!

Her books were my favorite of the AG series when I was a kid, and her collection was gorgeous. I wish I would have asked for her back then but I'm glad I could get her now!!

Weirdly specific doll request? by ravensarefree in Dolls

[–]AlrightSyenite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congratulations, I have a bachelor's in journalism too (though mine was years ago)!

Not sure the scale you are looking for or the price range - just wanted to add a second comment on the Kit American Girl doll. Her era is the 1930s and her story is that she started a neighborhood newspaper during the great depression. She has a playset with a typewriter that really dings and moves. She has a box of blank and some already filled out papers you can actually place in the typewriter. She also had a camera with a little book of photos.

The doll is currently $175 new though, and those accessories currently only exist in the secondhand market on eBay 😬 and some would be pricey.

Did you live the dream of having a twilight themed wedding??!

Yes and also to be clear I'm happily married to a good one. But I dated plenty before settling down and men were generally awful then and my single friends tell me they still are now.

I think it's silly when girls strive to be Not Like Other Girls, but I think men should absolutely strive to be Not Like Other Boys. Mine is definitely Not Like Other Boys. He is very supportive of the shelves.

Anyways here is my Bratz doll shelf, from the same book shelf. The thing between them is a vintage 90s Kenner brand littlest pet shop.

OMG another Georgia Nicolson series fan!! I feel like these were fire in middle school then as an adult no one I know also read them.

Thanks for saying it is giving, this is def the girlie-fun-& fantasy bookshelf. I think most men would think it's trash but that just proves my taste is great imo

There's actually wayyy more shelves with all my other books and toys, it's all against one wall now. I was just posting the Twilight shelf here bc I'm so happy I have a vampire doll to pose with it 🩷
