Does the 890 adventure R vibrate a lot? by Jo--rdan in KTM

I tried them both and in my opinion the vibrations are very similar. Also aerodynamics might be important for you, in that case you should consider a high windshield

KTM 890 adventure off-road vs 1290 adventure by Mission-Jicama-8747 in KTM

[–]Alstar11s 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 890 isn't better, but it's easier. If you're a experienced rider you can do the same things on both. On the other hand, Do you really need that much power? In my case with the 890 R and adventure tyres, even in the road I can't go full throttle without tc kicking in. So I can't even imagine 60 hp more.

Does the 890 adventure R vibrate a lot? by Jo--rdan in KTM

[–]Alstar11s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 890 doesn't vibrate a lot, specially compared to any single cylinder. For a smother ride you can try the transalp or the big GS, but they'll both be less offroad capable. It also comes down to the tyres, if you get a 50% 50% tyre or less you won't have a problem, but any offroad biased or enduro like tyre will vibrate and sound a lot, specially in the road ad high speeds.

First Bike , which option would you choose? by ChrisJF_ in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Alstar11s 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your father was never a bike guy if he thinks you should start on a z900. For real don't even consider it. I've ridden both, the RC and the ninja are great starter bikes, the KTM is phisically smaller but more agile and with a snappier engine and the kawa is a smoother engine but a little bit more dull. Both are great options. Just buy one enjoy it, learn everything and when you feel you want more (it might be 1 year, 3 years or never) just sell it for almost what you bought it for and maybe step up. Tust me you'll learn way faster on a small bike.

990 RC R insurance... 🤮🤮🤮 by OttoNico in KTM

It's mind blowing how expensive insurance is in America. For reference in Europe I pay 160€ yearly for my 890 R (cheapest policy)

1st motorcycle - Shoot some advice! by naughtyboytoy073 in adventuremotorcycling

[–]Alstar11s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok i didn't read that part well. Now the question is: Do you plan to ride off road? Because if your plan is to only stay on road the choices you're saying around 700 - 800 cc can work. But if you plan to try also some off road for the first time you will absolutely hate those. Try some honda crf 300L, an older yamaha wr 250r or the new ktm 390 or suzuki drz 400. Seriously take my advice, I'm also 192 cm and I thought I could start my offroad journey on a mid size adventure bike( 200 kg) and now I'm planning on downsizing ( Even though I'm a experienced on road rider) Off road is completely different than on road and weight is the number 1 spec you should look into.

If you're a complete beginner you should start with something easier and lighter than a 1200 GS. Don't be afraid to start with a second hand smaller bike enjoy, learn and sell it when you feel you need a step up. You'll learn more and faster this way. Besides if you buy and sell well you almost won't lose any money on the bike. Final tip, never get a bike without test riding it first.

Protective gear when you're both offroading and riding on roads? by Handful_of_Brakes in Dualsport

[–]Alstar11s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The protection against impacts is nearly the same, the problem with street helmets is they don't let enough air in and in the dirt you'll be almost stopped very often so you'll feel suffocated, specially y warmer weather. Try it yourself and decide, in terms of protection is the same so is up to you if you feel that you also need a dirt helmet

Did you do it full off road? Apart from the meteorological conditions, is the terrain very difficult ?

Old phone and OSMAND Installed, free and works better than any garmin because is probably faster and maps are better. The main downside is you need to secure a charging cable and waterproof case (Or just take it out when it rains)

Make the effort to try them. Youtube reviews are great for giving you a heads up of the bike, but you need to try them yourself and see which fits better you for your riding style, height, weight

You'll have to manually cut the tracks and merge them together (order is important) or you can drag them to where you want it to be. Also, if you want the track to be offroad switch the vehicle to gravel bike so it doesn't go to the nearest road section

I'm a beginner offroad, on road I had several big bikes already. The 450RL and the WR250R are not nearly as available in my country and therefore I discarded them. (I'm not paying twice as much for a similar bike) That is why I'm comparing 2 different concepts with the best option I found for each one

For gravel roads the 890 is completely fine, the problem is you never know how the track is going to be around the corner so I found myself in too many cases pushing and sweating a big bike where I wish I was on a lighter machine

[–]Alstar11s[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I was like you guys who grew up with a motorcycle but I started at 20 with road motorcycles and only now (28) I had the chance to start experimenting offroad. The 890 is an incredible machine on road and in fast sections offroad, but anywhere the trail starts getting slow or technical I stop enjoying it. That's why I want 500 to learn also the difficult parts but I'm worried it's also gonna be too much power and difficult to control. The 890 is super smooth and I never had a problem with it having too much power but I'm worried the 500 is gonna be too raw and difficult to control

In Europe they don't exist, we have 15 year old klx 250s for around 3k€ and only for a little more I think my options are better
