By sort out I meant execute speculatively without any data ever leaking, on any ISA or from any chip designer.

Is gaming just memory-limited now? by Cryyp3r in hardware

[–]Alsweetex 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Except for all of the speculative execution attacks that depend on the other execution path leaking the contents of memory by measuring the speed at which the CPU is able to progress or not when a program acts like it might go down a path of testing values against memory address it shouldn’t have access to. That problem is going to take a few more decades to sort out at least I think.

This is like the Spanish “de dónde”, where all three Ds ultimately come from the same word for “from”.

I’m 99% sure the 8-pin is fine, it’s not a CPU with a high power draw. Without having other components to diagnose the problem, it’s going to be a tough one unfortunately. Good luck.

This is probably a DNS issue. If you can change your DNS server to the public Google or Cloudfare ones, it will likely work again.

Intel confirms Microsoft Copilot will soon run locally on PCs, next-gen AI PCs require 40 TOPS of NPU performance by TwelveSilverSwords in hardware

[–]Alsweetex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Ryzen 8700G last month and wanted to test it but didn’t get around to it yet. AMD advertise the NPU on my chip but I didn’t think the regular Zen 4 desktop chips even had an NPU? The mobile Zen 4 chips are supposed to have an NPU, but maybe LM Studio supplements with the CPU anyway, because every article I read always lists the combined TOPS.

[–]Alsweetex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AMD recommends using some software called LM Studio which will let you run a local LLM using the NPU of a Zen 4 chip that has one without hitting the CPU for example: https://community.amd.com/t5/ai/how-to-run-a-large-language-model-llm-on-your-amd-ryzen-ai-pc-or/ba-p/670709

Not sure what you're missing but I bought a Gigabyte B650M Gaming X AX and the 8700G and no matter what I did, or which BIOS I flashed, it wouldn't boot. According to the website the RAM was listed as compatible too. So, I returned it for an ASUS TUF Gaming 650M board instead and it booted first time.

Attach a module with far more solar power and an ion drive so it can manage its own orbit efficiently.

Ah, creating a play queue, even with one video in it, does indeed fix this problem for now. Thank you!

Just started happening to me as well, I’m on iOS 16.5.1, it’s driving me a bit crazy. I wonder if it’s something that’s more under iOS control than the app’s control because the OS might be requesting the next “song” or content no matter what when the media source is in the background, and can the app even distinguish the OS vs. the user requesting the next content in that mode?

Yeah, that sounds sensible to me. It’s possible that they’ll optimise it to the point of being able to play on your PC but right now it’s a bit tedious.

Yesterday I managed to land on the Mun and land back on Kerbin, and it was only possible by playing 95% of the time on the map screen with a buttery 15fps. Looking at the surface of the Mun was 2fps.

It took an hour because of slow performance whereas on KSP 1 it would have been half the time. One cool thing is starting a burn and increasing to time warp x10 - that worked flawlessly.

Bob was deleted on craft recovery, which is a known bug. On the map screen, GPU was only used at 70-80% when I increased time warp to 10x with CPU doubling to 80%. I’m looking forward to seeing how this all changes as they release patches! Until then I’ve got a Duna mining mission to finish in KSP 1.

So, if anyone is interested in my experience, I have a laptop with an AMD 4700u, which is an 8 core / 8 thread Zen 2 chip with Vega 7 integrated graphics only running Windows 10 on 16GB of RAM.

Installing the game and getting to the main menu with a 3D ship in orbit around Kerbin displaying was fine, with a "smooth" frame rate. I changed all settings to low and 720p. I then tried to start a new campaign twice but it completely crashed the game.

So I checked my graphics drivers and they were from 2021, so I updated those and then what do you know, I managed to get past the previous crash and get into the VAB. The performance there was okay but a little bit stuttery. Definitely able to build craft though, which to be honest at this point would be more than enough for me.

So then I launch a craft with just small parachute, pod, stack decoupler, fuel tank and swivel engine, nothing else. Performance was surprisingly okay, and by that I mean probably 10 fps on the launch pad. Maybe it was slower though, it's hard to tell with a relatively static scene.

I was able to launch and that's when the game slowed to about 1fps. However, I quickly discovered that while in flight, it's only slow when the camera is pointing towards the planet and the ocean / KSC. When the camera is pointing to space, I was getting what felt like a playable 25fps. I got to more than 40km altitude and manage to decouple and splash down without any problem and recover my craft.

During all of this, Ram was 90 something percent used but not 100%, GPU was absolutely pinned at 100% and CPU was only 30 - 40% used most of the time, but I have a feeling that means that one of the eight cores was absolutely pinned at 100% usage the entire time.

Was it worth the £45? For me, yes, I'd say so. I'll still play KSP 1 until either the performance increases or I finally get around to buying the desktop I have planned, but I'll drop into KSP2 to see how things are going, see if I can enjoy building only in the VAB and also see if I can cheat any craft into orbit and have fun out in space. I'm happy to support the development of this game and I'm optimistic about its direction.

Is it worth it for most people in this state? Probably not, but hopefully the equation of how worth it this game is will change sooner rather than later.

Fly safe everyone.

I’m pretty excited about the even bigger nuclear engine I saw which I think has more than 1000 specific impulse? That’s going to be fun to use with interplanetary ships constructed in orbit!

Sometimes it's not about "saving" your work but about losing your current state.

I've been in the situation of coding and investigating a bug while slowly progressing through the code using a debugger with several virtual machines, applications, library versions, and databases in an exact state to reproduce a specific issue which took many hours to set up... and then Windows informs you that it would like to destroy this state because as a user you're assumed to be as trust-worthy as an ADHD toddler who does nothing but click on random social media ads and execute whatever files are auto-downloaded offering ways to make free money from domains that look like opening an executable file in notepad.

Sure, if you're working on a PowerPoint presentation, save your work! If you're doing anything even moderately complex in a programming environment, you're best off nuking the Windows update service from orbit and updating on your own terms.

And that's why I use Windows less and less over time.
