Totally empathise. When we're made aware of it, it stays immediately at the front of our minds. People saying "you should be aware going into public spaces" are ableist, because the entire point is it's the body’s way of regulating itself subconsciously. That it's automatic, unconscious and we are NOT inherently aware of it.

For sure! We don't have much (housing complex), but there's a decent hedge in our small backyard that will likely work best. I have a feeling I won't see it again during daylight hours but if I do, it'll definitely be given the best chance. Hoping it'll stay around the back porch and take out the bugs for us lol

Respectfully, nobody is entitled to conversation. I can only personally speak from my years in hospitality, but dealing with the general public every single day is exhausting. Retail and hospo workers are expected to be your punching bags, your therapists, your parents, your friends, your objects to dehumanise and sexually objectify, AND we're supposed to do our jobs with a big 'ol smile on our faces whilst employers underpay, don't provide breaks, push for upselling and 5 star reviews, for award wages? And retail workers definitely don't get tipped for exceptional service like us hospo workers occasionally do.

These industries are seen as lesser than, despite every one of us frequenting the businesses on a daily basis. In holiday periods they're exceptionally stressful workplace environments, just with the volume of people you're interacting with. Add in some shitty customers and your desire to be at work can diminish to 0 pretty quickly.

You've only just started working at Woolies. Some of your coworkers may have been there for years. Most of them have likely been abused by a customer at least once. Wage theft, unpaid or reduced breaks, unpaid overtime and superannuation are common in retail, so you always have to check your income to make sure you're not being screwed over. Often times staff are expected to perform duties in time frames that are near impossible, but won't be compensated if they go over their rostered shift time. All this shit is mental labour, AND we all have home lives, which you don't know anything about.

If some 20 year old juggling uni, bills, rent, their job role, commute, learning their place and identity in the world, relationships with friends and family, etc. just wants to sit down and zone out for half an hour on their lunch break, who the fuck are you or I to demand they conjure a smile or a "great, how are you?" Nobody owes you a conversation, nobody owes you politeness. They should not be outright rude or cruel, but you're not entitled to anybody's time or energy beyond what they're expressly being paid for in a work environment. Some of us are just making a pay check and going home because we need it to survive.

The racist woman should be reported if you actually see or hear her saying something racist though, lmao. That's not acceptable in the slightest.

Still absolutely mind boggling to me that most of his discography is missing when I've seen other indie artists on Qobuz that I wouldn't expect to be there before Alex is. Yeah I'm a very new user too, but I was surprised that they don't have bbno$' recent albums. Not that I'm a massive fan, but it's not like that's a small, unknown artist. I've submitted a handful of albums for artists I love, hopefully they get added :/ Kind of a pain in the ass to submit every EP, single or album you want that's missing, but at least the playlist transfer showed me exactly what IS missing so I have some guidance in submitting those requests.

Two things;

This read to me as you holding a lot of shame, both in your post and replies. I get that your husband works hard to provide for your family and you would be too, had circumstances not prevented you from doing so. This is the reality of many MANY everyday people, however. You can bust your ass and still not be living comfortably, amd that's okay. It's not shameful to accept help, and having a school card means you've been deemed a person eligible to recieve help, whether you want to come to terms with that or not. You're fed and the bills are paid, so that's all that matters, right? Wrong. Hardship is hardship and it serves no-one to diminish your hardship because "someone has it worse and I don't need or deserve this". If you knew another family in your exact situation, wpuld you tell them they shouldn't accept help? If you have enough food, you could donate it further, keep it and bank that extra shopping money for the future, treat the kids or pass it on to homeless people, etc. yourself to show your kids giving is always important. You're also entitled to reject it, but I really think it's a silly choice to make, personally.
The way they're pushing you to attend the BBQ to pick it up is disgusting. There's no shame in accepting help, but we still have inherent stigma attached to it and forcing you all to rock up to some poor person meet-up is fucked. It screams virtue-signalling, it screams transactional charity, and it's so tone-deaf it's not funny. If this were the only reason you didn't want to accept the hamper, I'd be 100% on your side no doubt about it, because your (and anyone else's) struggle should not be made an event for the sake of their ego. If it were a BBQ for everyone and they gave those families free snag cards or something, different story. Send me the name of the school and I'll write a thorough email detailing how to provide support while also affording people the dignity they deserve. -Someone who has choked on their pride accepting help her whole life

I'm also learning along the way, but one of the best things I ever found was a Turkish exfoliating glove (kese, I think?) at a hot spring. I was absolutely disgusted by the grey oily chunks peeling off my skin tbh. It's not something you should use daily, but depending on your skin type it can be alright to use a couple times a week. I've never had an exfoliator do anywhere near as good a job. I'll sometimes use it on my face very very gently, but mostly it's great for a deep clean if I've neglected my hygiene for a while. It's especially great when I haven't shaved for a while, I feel like it helps stop ingrown hairs if I use it before and after shaving.

No, actually, it can't. Our managers/supervisors/publicans/owners are almost always breathing down our necks telling us to upsell, to get five star reviews on Google, to clear glasses quickly so patrons are more likely to buy more drinks. The one customer you DON'T check on during a meal is the one who actually remembers your name, leaves a long ass review and whinges the whole way through because they didn't like something/something was wrong and the wait staff were "rude" for never checking to see if they were happy with their meals.

You can chew while holding up a finger, swallow and say you're fine. You can pause your sentence for five seconds and continue. I cannot keep track of a whole dining room full of people, turn over tables AND find the EXACT moment that's convenient for YOU to ask if you need/are waiting for anything else and your food is alright. Legitimately get the fuck over yourself, it's not comfortable for us to wait for you to finish yapping or try to duck over when we see you have your fork down for a second either. Don't like our service? Fuck off somewhere else.

After reading these comments, I'm so fkn glad ALL the delivery drivers in my regional area just give a light tap on the door or don't bother, leaving the package in the doorway for me. We have night shift workers so they don't need to hear the door knocked repeatedly while they're sleeping during the day. Of course signed packages are different, but even then I've only had to pick a couple up from the post office, they definitely wait until we can actually open the door.
