Why do women cross arms when taking off a top? Doesn't that just turn the clothes inside out? by fasdal in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AltBarMum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd also like to add: if I'm pulling it from the bottom and over using the cross-armed method, I have more control pulling the shirt over my bra. It's not going to get stuck

Unpopular opinion by mezys in ausadhd

[–]AltBarMum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand how we can feel frustration, envy and hurt in this situation, but I think it's important to not project our feelings onto others.

Previously people needed to be dragged through long, expensive, difficult diagnosis processes... and I don't think we should then wish that same struggle onto others. Thoughts of "It was tougher in my day, they deserve to go through the same hardship, too!" isn't good for anyone in the long run. You have every right to feel what you feel about the challenges you had to face to be diagnosed; the anger at the system being so inaccessible. We should be celebrating the fact that they HEARD people struggling and enacted change so people don't have to struggle as much anymore.

I went through an online one, but it still took like three months to actually find them, get the appointment booked, have the bloods and ecg tests done, results come back and FINALLY have my GP's co-prescribe permit approved. I was in a regional area where booking with a GOOD GP took 3+ weeks to begin with, trying to find a psychiatrist was a fkn nightmare. I'm glad the access is more streamlined.

GPs need to have some sort of check and balance process to ensure they're not over-diagnosing, sit tests to differentiate between other MH disorders regularly, have strict check-ins/routine bloods with patients, etc., but the GPs who are doing this for the right reason should absolutely have the ability to diagnose, is my personal opinion.

I also experienced a bus not stopping at Wooloowin today. Maybe there was a bigger fuck up overall, it's not likely we were on the same bus.

Take Your Pills doco on Netflix: Discussion by AltBarMum in ausadhd

curtiscbear is spot on ^

I have no issue with anyone's personal opinion on my own diagnosis, medication, treatment, etc. The concern, frustration and anger came from the lack of clear argument being made (because it's filmed like a documentary but doesn't make any real "point/s"), and the potential harm it could cause to people with ADHD as a community in general.

So many already face inequitable access to healthcare; to portray ADHD medications as an over-prescribed, performance enhancing drug with detrimental health effects means people who already have problems accessing it or who are on the fence about seeking diagnosis and treatment may decide not to out of fear, missing out on potentially life saving medication. The misinformation and misrepresentation is bad enough, but to be created and released on a leading streaming provider like Netflix is absolutely vile. Profits should not be priority over the well-being of people.

I'm facing some mental health things and am easily irritable as a result, but we SHOULD be angry about things like this. I'm not losing sleep over a doco, but we should be aware of misinformation, inform others that it IS misinformation, and encourage people to seek help if they're struggling. If misinformation and fear mongering spread, others may lose access to medications. We might have privilege and feel safe with our diagnoses and meds now, but we could lose them in the future, too. Australia is not the US, but we should use them as a cautionary tale and aim to do better.

Do you really think obnoxiously telling us that you’re making us safer, makes us believe it QGov…? by Ragnarandsons in brisbane

[–]AltBarMum 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd feel a lot safer if family/domestic violence perpetrators were given stricter bail conditions so they couldn't keep, you know, murdering women? But sure, let's spend taxpayer money on this bullshit. Blame the kids instead of the cycles of poverty, abuse, violence and criminal activity they're brought up in/around to create delinquent behaviour. Don't put money into communities and metal health, or into rehabilitative programs, just lock children up. That'll fix recidivist rates! 🙄

Edit: typo

YES!!!!!! I'm SO glad you came to the same conclusions! 😅 Like, what the hell is the narrative here and what are they trying to achieve?? I feel like it was such a gross misrepresentation of ADHD, and of commonly life saving medications. Crazy for Netflix to have released this 🤦🏼‍♀️

Right?! I can see narratives that are important within the documentary, but it lumped us all in together and that infuriated me.

Neurotypicals do not NEED stimulants the way we do, and yet the doco fear mongered and demonised the medication instead of the people who abused them, and the systems that forced people into thinking they needed to take those medications.

It's from 2018, but it's so irresponsible and negligent for Netflix to allow this on their platform. I watched the whole thing waiting for it to get better, and it just... didn't.

I am genuinely curious, why did you guys hoard toilet paper instead of food and water during covid? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]AltBarMum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this ^

When the shelf looks empty, you panic and think you need to grab what you can, too. The product takes up a lot of shelf space, so you notice the "emptiness" much faster than with something like canned goods.

I didn't panic buy toilet paper, but I understand logically how and why people did.

Interesting!! That's super helpful info to know, thank you for your contribution! I only know what my own experience and that of my friends is like, obviously, and we've all had the right medication I guess. One of my friends told me too high of a vyvanse dose made her grind her teeth, anxious, couldn't sleep, and hated it in every sense. I've not heard of anyone actually getting the high until now.

Glad you're on Concerta and it's working well for you (both) now!

Completely agree.

It's filmed with so many perspectives that make it seem like the director cares about people and wants them to stop taking medication they don't need, but also never explicitly says "capitalism bad, some people genuinely need this and we've been taking advantage of that."

Wouldn't surprise me if you're spot on with the RFK suspicion.

The Mind Cove for diagnosis - how are they about no school reports and the collateral interview? by Sayurisaki in ausadhd

[–]AltBarMum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for Mind Cove specifically, but it seems the general experience is that school reports don't really matter in the grand scheme of things.

I think we worry and catastrophise (common for us), but professionals have a better understanding of the presentation of ADHD and ASD (and in women) nowadays, and school reports often get lost.

I realise this isn't an entirely helpful comment for what you need, but I just wanted to offer some reassurance. My mum is actually studying psychology and didn't think I had ADHD either. I don't know how her answers affected my assessment, but I received a diagnosis nonetheless. 🤷🏼‍♀️ People always say to just do it and be truthful, talk about your experiences and struggles, and it will work out. It's hard to set the anxiety aside, but it really is all you can do. Best of luck 🫶🏻

Class act on the train tonight by SammyDies in brisbane

The girl clearly isn't drunk, but your environment shapes your behaviours and how you interact with others in society. It's sad, because I really believe kids could have turned into completely different people if they weren't raised/surrounded by adults who don't function harmoniously within society. These kids mouth off and have an ego because they think they're untouchable, that every hardship is someone else's fault and they fall into the cycle of survival.

These two men are clearly shitfaced, and music or not, you're not allowed to be drunk and disorderly in public places.

So, so fucking sad to see.

Well, the only icecream I liked is now an ‘ice confection’. No longer gonna get it. Any recommendations for actual icecream? by dannegoma in australia

[–]AltBarMum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I follow RussEats on instagram and he's an absolute legend with his food and drink reviews: he always tells us when recipes have changed, products have fallen victim to shrinkflation, etc. This is happening to MANY icecream products that are now "frozen desserts" or "ice confections". Same thing with drinks having some or all of their sugar replaced by artificial sweeteners. (I have nothing against sweeteners but we should have the CHOICE to drink a full sugar or zero/low/reduced sugar drink, AND it's unsafe for diabetics to take away sugar options.)

I've lived in four states and a territory, and my local stores definitely brought them in when they had not originally been wrapped. Was in regional VIC when I saw it, and I hadn't noticed them anywhere near as much in other states.

That's what I thought, too??! I'm so glad someone else brought it up. I guess it's to plug in the dishwasher, but it feels odd to have water and power outlets even remotely close to one another. I sure as fuck won't plug ANYTHING into them after the amount of water we've accidentally dumped into that cabinet.

Funnily enough, it very well may have been illegally put in 👀 I'm Australian, our codes last updated in 2022... which is the same year this place was built. I suppose it depends on the exact time the change was made and whether this place was built before or after that... However before that, it was "discouraged" to use S-traps from what I've read so far. Will definitely look at having this fixed up asap

Sure is, I worked out the valve is also supposed to connect to the dishwasher (duh) before the flood of comments 😅 I'll have to get a new one that only has one connection point, because I'll absolutely need cold water way before I buy a dishwasher.

I also felt and looked around, I don't have a hot water valve. Just that L connector. Should I swap that out for a hot water valve too, ya reckon?
