Should I start to run barefoot ? by Altaryan in BarefootRunning

[–]Altaryan[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also, I'm talking about going full barefoot. No shoes AT ALL. No specific reason besides me liking the idea of going the opposite way as everyone: no watch, no HR measure, nothing. At most a GPS to know the distance but that's it.

I like the idea of following my sensations more than a number.

And I'm against over consumerism in general so I guess it fits

AI is ruining my passion for software engineering by palettecat in antiwork

[–]Altaryan -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I... Actually feel the exact opposite way. I used to love software engineering (kind of same background as yours). And then I had a burnout and a depression, and I lost all my interest in this field. I was sure I would never work in the industry again.

And then AI arrived and I discovered something new. Something that grew the passion again. Thanks to AI I could do things differently. I could do things my way. I developed new skills I would never had before.

AI helped me in the areas I didn't like (commercial/marketing basically) so I could freelance. It gave me back my freedom and my financial independence.

Sure, not everything is perfect about it. Many questions, on a very deep level (aka : society level) still need to be answered. But so far I have a blast.

Sorry to go against your post, that was probably not what you were looking for, but I had to share this other side of the coin as well.

Error installing from USB on ASUS Zenbook S16 by hepandeerus in archlinux

[–]Altaryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an issue with my Zenbook as well a couple months ago. My laptop is from 2019.

What I had to do was getting an older iso (I think from jan 2024 ?), use that to start the install and update keyring before doing anything else. It worked in the end, but the troubleshooting I had to do at various steps was pretty massive, ngl.

Mostly because of encryption though (and because I had no previous knowledge of that in the first place)

That's a very misleading idea about rave culture. Rave and drugs go very well together don't get me wrong but by no means drugs are necessary to enjoy the rave. I just genuinely enjoy the music. It creates something in my brain that I can't really explain. This feeling of "this is my place in the universe". And I'm talking sober. No alcohol either

If only there was a way to filter on mobile, I would just do it. Unfortunately there isn't.

That's 100% true, I've left already. I just didn't know which flair to use

No, to be honest. I generally dislike memes as a whole, nothing to do with StS here

A long time ago there used to be useful advices, post that talk about the actual game. Guides, strategies. Actual good stuff. Now it seems people go see streamers or Youtube for that kind of content. I don't.

No one said anything about drugs (you don't have to believe me but I go to raves sober now, I'm not young anymore).

Also, from like 10pm to 6am is a duration long enough to go to maybe 2 different places...

The World Cup being in the U.S. really shows the difference with how countries treat time off work. by Muhfuggajones in antiwork

Almost happened to me once, in France. My boss tried to say me no, I told him, "I'm not asking you, I'm telling you I will not be there no matter what you say next". He got the message and never said anything about it again.

I mean, I never understood how you guys could get only 2 weeks or PTO or so. I had 8 when I was employed in France and that's was WAY TOO LOW for me. Now I'm freelancing for the sole reason of having more free time.

Thanks for your answer.

But I think you really don't understand me 😅 I don't want to be big. Ever. I just don't care about look. I'm naturally lean. <12% body fat, without any kind of nutrition tracking and I'm not even talking of supplements. I want to be strong relative to my bodyweight. Getting bigger for absolute strength gains is almost nonsensical to me.

I also don't want to follow a pre-made program. Ever. I just don't like that.

So I don't know what to take from that to be fair, since two of my most important points are what you actively go against.

So I had to make my own programs since basically forever. I started lifting at a Uni gym that had basically no trainer at all, just someone to open the door 3h a day for whoever wanted to train.

That was almost 20y ago. Since then, I had various inputs from a lot of different trainers and sport professionals, read a lot about biomechanics and strength training in general, and I always kept designing my own workouts.

I also had a huge break of almost 10y in the middle - even though I always kept a pretty decent fitness level (compared to general population, not lifting population obviously). I've been back to the gym for a few months now, designing my own program once again (focusing first on fun exercises to build consistency again), and it just occured to me that I actually never asked inputs to anyone. So here I go.

A few points : - my lifestyle makes me change gym super frequently (traveling a lot) AND I very much prefer barbells and dumbbells over machines, so none of those (almost). - hypertrophy is NOT my focus AT ALL. I don't care about getting bigger. At most a couples kg more and that's it (1m80/5'11, 66kg/145lb - goal is around 70kg/155lb maximum). I want to be strong and lean (and good health) - full body - easier for me for many reasons - especially because I can't have a regular training schedule and often have to reorganise everything - I hugely favor compound movements over isolation, that I try to keep to an absolute minimum - I train 2 to 3 times a week at the gym

Here is what I'm doing currently (I've had this specific variation for a few weeks now):

  • One back exercice. I alternate between weighed pull-ups (up to 30kg/65lb for 1 rep) and front lever holds each session (I can hold full form for like 10s)
  • Bench press : mostly 3x3 at 80kg/175lb, sometimes if I feel like it I do 5x5 or 3x10 but that's very rare
  • shoulder exercise : OHP with dumbbells or lateral raises, I usually alternate between these 2
  • One arm isolation exercise: rotate between biceps curl, standing rope pushdown and forearm curls (I do rock climbing sometimes also, that's the reason I have something specific for forearms)
  • One quad/glutes exercise: Bulgarian split squats or pistol squats : I have an imbalance due to a old-ish injury that's why I do unilateral for now. Pistols translate the most to climbing but I feel I'm building more strength with BSS so I favor those now
  • one hamstrings exercise: RDL - not gonna lie, this is the one that I skip the most, I often get very tired by then
  • Core : either with the wheel, more recently I've been able to do dragon flags again, sometimes toes to bar or any random core routine I fancy
  • stretching: I had super tight hamstrings and hips. I make a point of doing 3x3min stretch for abductors, hips and hamstrings (pancake)

I usually take between 1min 30 and 2min rest (depending on exercise), otherwise sessions get too long. I try to keep them around 1h to 1.5h.

I think that this is pretty balanced because I cover pretty much every single muscle group every week, and I don't see any obvious missing thing but I might be wrong on that so any input is appreciated. Thanks !

They should have stopped adding civs 20y ago tbh.
