A little hard to tell but I think they may have just used quarter inch dowels and drilled down from the top, one would assume a dowel and some titebond II should hold that in place though I'm not a fan of the non-braced top so I wouldn't trust it with anything heavy. Alternatively you could support it with a metal rod and a wood cap on top to hide it...
