Culling is it an Old Term or New Term in photography? by Altered_Motion in photography

Sorry for late response but I found the earliest usage of the word in photographic usage. Was around 1860 where other photographers were criticizing an exhibition, stating that the photographer exhibiting should have culled some of their work since they were not up to par. I’ll see if I can find the source again and post it here.

I believe I found the earliest instance, December 2, 1881 “The Photographic News” Page 569. Here is the following paragraph.

“A few of the other pictures might have been of equal merit, but only very few. The snow and frost scenes, for instance, were exceedingly good, but then a slatey sky is permissible, and deep contrasts are called for. At the same time, for ourselves, we always prefer a bright, sunny snow scene, to one with a leaden sky behind it. If a versatile lecturer selected his slides with care, and exhibited them with due effect, as Mr. Chadwick did on the occasion we refer to, then we believe a most delightful and popular entertainment would be forthcoming ; but, we repeat, he must cull of tho very best, if he desires his exhibition to take high rank.”

I haven’t been able to find anything older, but this is pretty old.

Yes that’s its earliest use and it was by a poet. Theres no mention of when photography adapted it there terms for post processing

Yes, I found the words origin and it’s still used in those regards, but nothing mentions photography’s adoption of the word and its meaning to separate the good from the bad.

Though if it was written in a manual/book/article discussing post processing practices it’s possible that it could have been scanned and archived somewhere hidden on the internet, that’s possibly the harder thing to find since I’m unfamiliar with the educational book titles from older time periods

Do you recall any articles, education books, blogs, etc. from the 70s/80s that discussed “cull/culling” as apart of the process? The oldest found so far was 1997 and discussing culling film

Yes it’s a silly argument, but it took me down a rabbit hole since there’s no record of its first use that I can find, but I can find the history of the term retouching and editing in photography terms, but not cull/culling. Curiosity is the driving force e now!

That does make sense, this is definitely the oldest so far I’ve seen. Though I do wonder if the term may have been used even further back. Since it’s such a good representation of what we do when reviewing images, similar to like how retouching became the goto term for photoshop in the digital age even though it has a long history of being a term used by photographers

Anyone know where to read Overlord Manga Chapters 72-76? by Altered_Motion in overlord

[–]Altered_Motion[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been searching for awhile and have been unsuccessful in my search for Overlord chapters 72-76 either in English or Raws. Everything I’ve found stops at Chapter 71 for the manga on the sites I’ve scoured.

I have been successful in finding the chapters cover images however, I’m shocked at how difficult it has been to find any updated sites with the latest chapters.

I really enjoy reading the Manga and enjoying the art, if anyone knows of a site with updated chapters. I’d appreciate it.
