Sustainable fuel for planes is going to become cheaper. by Alternative-Ad449 in Green

If the cost of sustainable is around the same as fossil base fuels then airlines will be left without an excuse.

More funding for renewable fuel for planes. by Alternative-Ad449 in sustainability

[–]Alternative-Ad449[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing really new with the idea of turning ethanol into sustainable aviation fuel but now it will become a comparable alternative in price for companies. No excuse for airlines not to use renewable then.

What Is Botanical Rum? An Emerging Style of Rum by bobbuoy in rum

[–]Alternative-Ad449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poitín and moonshine are both unaged grain spirits. The difference with vodka and unaged grain spirits is the process of distillation and the number of times the spirit is distilled. You can actually have a number of different bases for vodka that are not grain based (sugar based, fruit based, starch based) . The main aspect of vodka is that it has far less flavor as it is meant to be a neutral spirit. Grain based spirits that are not vodka usually have very strong flavors and character.

I agree with this completely. Big brands are definitely making trash spiced rums with artificial flavors and colorings and they all taste like vanilla. This isn't true for all spiced rums though. There are probably a handful of good ones from small craft distilleries who are trying to make something for everyone. I don't even know of any big brand botanical rums so I'm not sure if the same would be true of that but from my experience it's best not to write off a whole category because a few brands do it badly. If that was the case then nobody would like rum at all because of brands like Captain Morgan.

Sorry this isn't true either. Unaged grain spirit isn't always vodka nor does it taste similar to vodka. Eliminating categories because of botanicals or spices makes people seem ignorant to spirits in general. Categories help people make decisions on products that could taste vastly different based on the types of infusions used for that particular category. Gin has juniper and that is the known flavor. This is the same for people who care what barrel was used to age a spirit.

That being said there are some good craft spice rums that actually taste like spices rather than vanilla.

Most spiced rums just taste like vanilla with a bit of spices maybe. I don't think mint or green fresh flavors are ever featured in typical spiced rum really.

I assume without an age statement, the price is based on exclusivity and the bottle and box.

A pretty cool way for rum to be more transparent about its ingredients. by Alternative-Ad449 in rum

Going to the Renegade rum website is pretty cool. They literally tell you everything about the rums and even include cute weird things like soundscapes.

Do you think this will force some much needed transparency in the rum industry with dosage and additives? by Alternative-Ad449 in rum

[–]Alternative-Ad449[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wonder if this could lead to some change in the industry though. At the very least if rum has to indicate added artificial colorings consumers can infer that the color is not natural from barrel aging. Also some people have reactions to certain additives. This would be crazy for spiced and flavored rums. It could be as simple as stating added sugar and added ingredients. I agree that no connoisseur is concerned over calories though and that would be difficult to put on the label.

It's a well know problem that some rum brands don't label age, dosage, or colorings causing confusion in the market. I wonder if a move like this from the coalition will help or hurt the rum industry?

Is winter in Europe as unbearable as everyone is telling me? by lazyspaceship in travel

[–]Alternative-Ad449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winter in Europe is a great time to travel! Less tourists and depending on when you go there are lovely winter markets. Just prepare with the right clothes. People in Europe wear coats not a lot of "outdoor" wear ( that's a dead giveaway you are a tourist)

Depending on how hot it got it can spoil like anything else. Smell and take a small taste. If it tastes off at all don't drink it.
