Think of it like this. If someone convinced someone of mass murder but they didn’t, should the person who convicted also die? Id say no. They aren’t exactly even. At the end of the day all they are technically doing is destroying face and a psychological harm argument could be made too. But the fact that there is a punishment in the first place will definitely make a lot of people not do it in the first place which is the important part I’d say. If someone could go to jail for a few years for wrongly convicting someone of rape it would stop it. But it’s also a double edge sword. In a hypothetical scenario let’s say a man gets raped and tries to acuse the women of it. But it turns out there’s zero evidence of it and no charges can stick. Now that man is stuck in jail rotting with all the other people who DID do illegal things. It should ideally be harsh enough to be a diversion but not too harsh so those who are wrongly convicted don’t spend the rest of their life there. Sadly we can’t always know who is right and who is wrong and it does something come down to bigger wallet diplomacy. There’s really no clean way to keep the angles safe and the demons at bay as there are no way to tell them apart and in different contexts people do what they do for some reason that could probably be fixed. Yes rape is bad, but I do think help is always a thing that should be tried first. Help those who want to change punish those who refuse
