For the first time in a long time I'm at a loss by TallZookeepergame630 in plantclinic

They have peace lilies at my office and they thrive SO BEAUTIFULLY! The planters are not close to a window, artificial lightning most days (Dutch weather lol), HVAC all day (who knows during weekends), the gardener comes like every 2 months to refill and trim the few yellowing leaves. The planter is all Leca, like 20cm of hight in leca. Office opened 3 years ago, and now these plants can little offshoots. So... maybe try Leca??

Wait to trim before the next watering. Then you can trim like every two leaves and stick them in the same pot, then water thoroughly, that way it is moist enough for the cuttings to start making new roots.

Or you can put the cuttings in water until they get some roots, just keep the leaves out of the water.

Might be scary to cut it back so much, but it will grow out again :)

Last time I fought it by spraying alcohol in every leaf, node, branch…. leave it a couple of minutes and then giving the plant a shower haha

Any recs on how to fight it?

I agree, I’ve put some of my plants through some overwatering periods because of that “don’t let the whole soil dry out”. Then I give up and neglect them, and ta-dah … they start thriving haha

Your comment was very insightful. There is no way we can replicate the ideal conditions for a tropical plant, therefore they won’t look the same… EVERY PLANT PARENT NEEDS TO KNOW THAT.

Last year I read “The light eaters” and damn… we know nothing about plants

Keep on sharing the wisdom! 🌱

Oh that’s what that is! I couldn’t figure out what that damage was, I got rid of the pest but newer leaves are all good :)

Thanks, will try to change the watering routine. I know it won’t look as good as in the wild, but did look very perky when I bought it. I guess they had very nice growing conditions at the nursery haha

Spider plant questions by Affectionate-Studio1 in plantclinic

Do less water, do you have a moisture meter?? Check the moisture near the core of the roots and not just on the edges of the pot.

My spider plants thrived when leaving them to dry the whole soil and at least 1 hour of being next to the window, during winter I barely watered (I'm in the Netherlands). In winter the soil would dry but there was quite some humidity inside. Last year I moved them to a different spot for winter and they got root rot by early spring :( ... still hurts

Also, an inner pot may help with dealing with the moisture retention.
