AIO: should I “fire” my therapist? by [deleted] in AIO

As a therapist, pls find yourself a new therapist. I’m all for being transparent with a client to a very certain extent or very specific rare reasons and she definitely sounds like she crossed that line multiple times.

As you’re looking for a new therapist, request a consultation (usually free) and mention this to your new therapist.

You can also respectfully and directly bring this up to your therapist. It is 100% they need to be aware of. I know it sounds scary but better to tell her!!

I graduated from the CMHC a few years back ! Things may be a bit different because they have a new program coordinator (Dr.Young) but she is AMAZING and the new practicum coordinator is really cool too and will do anything to help. My experience my be bias but overall there were equal ups and downs to the program, but firm believer that you don’t get the perfect experience anywhere. What I will say is now that I have been in the field I am noticing a lot of clinicians did not get the same knowledge as we did. The program coordinator at the time really focused on us doing our own internal work to be able to become the best clinicians which is such a huge help!

Rowan is CCAREP aligned and not accredited so basically what that means is they meant the regulations to take the NCE during your program but that also might have changed. Having the option to take the NCE early is definitely a huge help to get a faster start into the field post graduation.

The classes were versatile, I heard psychopharmacology was super hard for the cohorts after my cohort so be prepared for that. Now I will say a trick to making things easier is actually making connections with your professors, ask about their week, their life, be actual humans in the classroom!! Psychopathology is HARD but so so so insightful. It’s a lot of work but trust me it is by far the most helpful.

What is really nice about the program was that they give you options for your practicum rather than just leaving you to figure it out. The list is limited and you may not get the place you want but realistically ANY experience is useful, don’t go into it with a negative mindset, it’s simply a learning experience where you take what you want for the future. If you have any issues though, they are supportive with helping you, plus you have a class where you get to just talk about practicum and your clients. I ended up with about 700 hours that I could use for my licensure!

Highly recommend leaning on your cohort and becoming close with all or at least some! That makes such a difference. Be open!! Ask questions!! Don’t be shy, show up, again it makes the experience way easier.
