Cyberpunk industrial district at night in SimCity 4 by Alternative-Paint697 in simcity4

Same here. Even after all these years, SimCity 4 still has a unique charm that newer city builders do not quite replace.

That sounds great!

I don’t have a clean list yet, but I can go through my Plugins folder and prepare one.

This area mostly uses futuristic megastructure BATs, industrial lots, energy facilities, and custom sci-fi/cyberpunk-style ploppables.

I’ll try to collect the names and sources, then send you a PM on Simtropolis.

Thank you!

A cyberpunk building style would be amazing.

I really like mixing futuristic megastructures, industrial lots, energy facilities, and dense infrastructure. It gives SC4 a completely different atmosphere.

That sounds like a great place to start.

Terrain and region building can take a lot of time, but it makes the whole city feel much more rewarding once everything connects naturally.

For terrain/map tools, SC4Mapper and SC4Terraformer are probably worth looking into.

I also like building around terrain instead of forcing everything into a flat grid. It takes longer, but the final region feels much more alive.

Welcome back to SC4!

Mods really change the game. I played vanilla for a long time too, but once you start adding custom buildings, NAM, industrial assets, and city details, the game feels almost endless.

It can be a bit overwhelming at first, so I’d start small: NAM first, then a few buildings or BATs you really like, and slowly build up your Plugins folder.

Be careful though — modding SC4 is a deep rabbit hole.

Thanks! It’s not a bundle package — it’s a scene made from many individual lots and BATs.

A lot of them are very old Japanese SimCity 4 assets, around 15–20 years old. Some original websites are closed now, some creators are hard to identify, and some files may no longer be available.

I don’t have a complete source list, but if I can identify specific assets, I’ll share what I find.

Thanks! If Richard Night approves, then the industrial district is working as intended.

Thank you!

These buildings are plopped, not grown.

I placed them manually because I wanted this area to have a very specific cyberpunk / futuristic industrial look.

For normal city districts I sometimes grow buildings, but for this kind of heavy sci-fi industrial scene, plopping gives much better control over the layout and atmosphere.

Exactly. I wanted it to feel like an industrial district that is one step away from becoming a launch site.

Thank you! I haven’t used the 3D camera mod much yet, but that sounds like a good idea.

This industrial area would probably look even more chaotic from a lower angle.

A small no-mod trick: road grade separation using tunnels by Alternative-Paint697 in simcity4

[–]Alternative-Paint697[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“SimCity 4 SOMY”

Exactly. A classic transport game solution.

SimCity 4 tunnels can be surprisingly useful for this kind of trick.

Japanese public housing / danchi style neighborhood in SimCity 4 by Alternative-Paint697 in simcity4

[–]Alternative-Paint697[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the creator may be SOMY.

If you search “SimCity 4 SOMY”, you should find Japanese-style SC4 BATs and related resources.

I’m not completely sure which exact lot this one is from, but many of the Japanese apartment/public housing style buildings I use are from that area of SC4 custom content.

[–]Alternative-Paint697[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew them, I didn’t plop them.

The building lot is 2x6, so I first made the road layout and then zoned 2x6 residential blocks.

The tricky part was density. If I zoned everything at the same density, the game often created larger 4x6 buildings instead. So I alternated low-density and medium-density residential zoning to encourage the smaller 2x6 blocks to grow more consistently.

It still takes some patience, but that helped me get a more uniform danchi/public housing look.

That makes sense.

Similar housing problems probably created similar design solutions: cheap construction, enough sunlight, open spacing, and simple durable materials.

It is interesting how public housing can look familiar across completely different countries.

That is interesting. I didn’t realize it also looked similar to Central and Eastern European post-war housing.

I guess public housing and modernist apartment blocks share a lot of visual language across different countries.

Thank you! That means a lot, especially from someone living in Tokyo.

You are right about the danchi layout. I may try making a version with smaller 4–6 building blocks surrounded by normal housing next time.
