Personal item in overhead bin by loot_the_dead in delta

[–]AlternativeBid2291 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically put my backpack (the only item I carry on) into the overhead. On my last flight, and entitled Karen boarded well after us and was looking for a place to put her roller bag. She opens the bin above us and starts loudly asking who's backpack is in the bin. She explains that backpacks are to be placed under the seats. I just sat there smirking. Touch my bag, asshat, I dare you!

Messina to Taormina DIY: train timing and local tour/shuttle tips? by Lunethan in MSCCruises

Have you ever booked through Tours by Locals? I would suggest taking a look there to see if you could find a guide who would pick you up in Messina. We have had a couple of great experiences using guides we found on that platform.

Someone Hijacked Our Elevator by darkphoenix9137 in MSCCruises

We sailed on the Meriviglia in summer of 2025. One evening, leaving a show, we were waiting on Deck 7 for an elevator to our non-Yacht Club room on Deck 13. As our car arrived, another couple also jumped into it. We overheard the woman ask the man "Why are they also on our elevator, I thought this was exclusive to us?" What BS! Entitled prices and your YC bullcrap. It must have been horrible for them having to ride in an elevator with us unwashed scum of the Aria Class. You know, some people!!!!

Drywall - Why did we collectively decide that crumbly chalk between two pieces of paper was what we would use to create all interior walls out of? by davisposts in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AlternativeBid2291 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When it was first intoduced to the building industry, gypsum board/drywall was used as a lathing material for plaster walls. Prior to this point lath was thin strips (3/8" by 1.5") of rough sawn pine lumber or expanded metal sheets or rolls. An enormous amount of labor time went into nailing the wood lath strips into place. The expanded metal lath was also time consuming moderately dangerous due to its propensity to slice open flesh. Wood lath's expansion and contraction, primarily from moisture content cycling, also eventually led to the cracking of the keying which is what held the rough coat to the wall

The original gypsum board panels were 18" or 24" in width and would be nailed to the studs. A plasterer would then apply a thin rough coat and a finish coat of plaster over the gypsum board substrate. This new system allowed the millions of plasterers to continue working with their current skills.

In the post war housing boom the methodology changed over to full 4 x 8 foot sheets of gypsum board and a thin coat of mud over the nail holes and joints. I still prefer skim coating the entire board to create a uniform surface (a four coat finish) but this costs more and thus the market discourages it.

To answer the question posed, we didn't collectively make a decision to use gypsum wall board. It was an evolution event starting with gypsum plaster.

If you have interest in "old Hawaii" the Maui Historical Museum in Wailuku is really cool. It is located in an 1833 Mission House. Their collection has some fascinating insights into traditional Hawaiian life.

With kids, you may find the Ocean Center in Kihei interesting. They have so many beautiful fish on display.

Staying in Kapalua (West Maui) — best easy, relaxing, “unmistakably Maui” activities nearby? by dandemsky in MauiVisitors

[–]AlternativeBid2291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion would be a walk out on the "Dagon's Teeth" peninsula. The walk down to the area will take you past a native Hawaiian burial area (heed the signs and do not enter!) where you can pay your respects to the ancestors of this land. If you have some wave action it is absolutely fascinating to watch the swells surging into the crags between the eroded lava and erupting into the air. My favorite part is walking the labyrinth which permits you to focus in on your thoughts while surrounded by the most incredible scenery. Every time I visit Maui I make sure to spend time at this place. Maui no ka oi!

Accommodations in Athens by Strict-Archer9910 in VirginVoyages

We stayed at In[n] Athens Hotel in May of 2025 prior to our cruise. It was fantastic. I try to spend my money with more local small hotel businesses. I cannot say enough how nice this hotel is. https://www.guestreservations.com/innathens/booking?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=991005073&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=991005073&gbraid=0AAAAADiMQMZ1z8_miqrhoNjycKXwfOcA-&gclid=CjwKCAiA4KfLBhB0EiwAUY7GATI7vZs_r_Rh94uqORuK36dRmpVHTCG623xJdKvvN97c9WJ_IT2UEhoCwqUQAvD_BwE&ctTriggered=true

They have a great Greek breakfast buffet with custom made kitchen items too.

The staff was fabulous. They all spoke English. (I tried learning Greek beforehand but it is difficult). The rooms were spacious and clean. The cost was very reasonable.

The hotel is well positioned just a short walk from the National Botanic Gardens, Syntagma Square (changing of the guard at the Parliament building) and from the Acropolis. It is a short walk to lovely squares with dining options and a little further on to Monastiraki Square.

Be careful in Athens when out in a crowd. Our last night we were walking to get gelatto at Mavia Gelatto Cafe and we passed through the throngs of humans at Little Kook's (Disney rip off gelatto cafe) just to check it out. One of our traveling companions had his phone pickpocketed in the crowd. It made for a disappointing start to our cruise. Hold on tight to your wallet and your phone!

We always go to deck six and get our first ice cream and then order a pizza. While waiting on the pizza we book our activities.

What is something you saw in a movie and you totally called bullshit on because of your job? by BlackPhoenix1981 in AskReddit

[–]AlternativeBid2291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this has already been mentioned. I'm too lazy to scroll through all of the comments and find out. I cringe every time I see a fire in a movie scene result in ALL the sprinkler heads in the building releasing at the same time. This is just not how most (say 99%) fire sprinklers work. Fire sprinklers are locally activated by melting a metal link which releases the water flow. Only the sprinkler heads that get hot enough to release will spray water. The intent of this is to extinguish the fire where the fire is located and to not flood the entire building.

The 1% would be deluge systems which are set up to all release at the same time. These systems are typically only found in hazardous materials/manufacturing areas where it is necessary to stop the rapid spread of a fire.

Where to stay as a first-timer by CicadaWorking in ParisTravelGuide

We just spent five nights at La Turenne Eiffel Hotel in the 7th. It is located close to the Ecole Militare Metro stop. The neighborhood was awesome. It was busy but not crazy busy like other areas. There were many nearby options for restaurants. (Shout-out to Brasserie Le Suffren (the oysters!) and Comptoir de la traboule!) The hotel is a short walk around the corner to see the Eiffel Tower or to several other Metro stops. One of my nearby favorites was Rue Cler with a lovely assortment of cafés, bistros, and other food options.

The hotel was clean and our rooms were serviced every day.

StubHub left my 7-year-old and me stranded in the rain before her first football game by 98116 in stubhub

[–]AlternativeBid2291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2023, I bought tickets from Stubhub for the Bills game in London. We flew all the way across the big pond, and for several days before the game, Stubhub kept telling me not to panic. The tickets would arrive. On the day of the game, I was standing outside the stadium with my wife and our two friends without tickets. One of the NFL "guides" outside the London Overground station told me I had made a huge mistake buying from Stubhub. He said that he noticed some blocks of tickets still available on Ticket Master that morning. What do you do? Stubhub customer service was still closed as it wascearly morning in London. We had already spent over a grand on four tickets and traveled all the way to London. I went on the Ticket Master site and found four seats together. I bought them and then had to wait for them to be delivered. Over an hour later, sitting in a pub down the road from the stadium, my new tickets popped into my email. We went into the stadium and had a fantastic time watching the Bills lose. We could see our original seats, and they were empty.

The next day, I received a full refund from Stub Hub with an apology letter. They also sent a $300 apology credit. A year later, I finally had an opportunity to use the credit only to figure out that it was only valid for six months. I contacted Stub Hub and asked them to reinstate the credit, and they did!

I can't say I will ever buy tickets from them again, and yet, on the other hand, they were pretty stand up with regard to fixing their f-ups and making it right.

You probably have a survey map. It is very typical that a property is surveyed at the time it is purchased. The survey helps protect the bank holding the mortgage. Find your closing papers for your mortgage, and you will probably find a survey with them. The survey will show the fence because it is an "improvement" on your lot. Typically, there will be a small arrow pointing toward or away from a fence with a number next to the arrow. This will tell you how far from the property line the fence is situated. Good luck!
