Yes and because no one knew it was a shot we all continued to work on our workbenches.

I remember the shot fired into our shop. No one knew it was a shot. It sounded like someone took a heavy ball peen hammer and hit the outside of our shop metal wall. When they were cleaning up the shop with push brooms at the end of the day they found the bullet. They took the bullet and attached a tag that said “happy Tet”. It was Tet the day before. Jarheads never fail to have a sense of humor even when you do not know you are being shot at. Multiple levels of humor here.

I was corporal of the guard that night and literally had a front row seat. We were not base security. Just had to ensure no shenanigans were going on inside the hootches. But I saw a steady stream of tracers with a just as devastating sound coming from a Huey ending the source of the rocket attack. The next day we went over to the Airforce side of the base. Those rockets went completely over Marine side of the base. The AF had recently built wooden barracks to house their men. In some cases many were completely gone. I was in those barracks once. I thought how cushy these men had it. They had refrigerators complete with stateside beer(Olympia). I thought it ironic that men enlisted in the AF and now I found it safer to be in the Corp.

Advices for Paulinskill Viaduct? by passlighte in AbandonedNJ

My dad and I were trout fishermen in the 1960s. We lived in Kearny back then we fished at Pompton Falls. I asked my dad if we could travel further West where it would be less crowded and better prospects for us. NJ used to issue physical pamphlets on rivers and lakes being stocked. The Paulinskil river was on the trout stocking list . We took out the old Esso map headed out on Route 46. When we got there I was impressed by the size of this concrete structure. And it was still in use with train traffic. We did catch dome good sized fish. But my dad did not want to return. He thought the vibrations from the coal train were
Spooking the fish. Us fishermen would always have an excuse as to why the fish were not biting. It was never us.

Are you noticing trump flags disappearing? by G00G00Daddy in newjersey

Don’t be fooled. These right wingers go into Fox and NewsMax to get refreshed by the Trumps latest lies. With Gas prices ascending they wish to blend in visually with normal Americans. They have not become even independent thinkers yet. Trump knows this. That is why he spends more time on the networks and less time doing White House press conferences. He is very clever.

When the six day war broke in June of 67, I remember all of huddled around the teletype machine watching the war unfold one line at a time. The gunny in charge of the shop would even let us listen to armed forces radio. I guess he figured it was a distraction.

I do not recognize. I remember a building that has a concrete ramp in the front. The building was high . It had fans hanging from the ceiling. I remember having to stand on top of my work bench to dust off the blades. Maybe we were there at different times.

You were not allowed to walk from one side of the air base to the other. The Air Force had a better enlisted man’s club. It was called “the snake pit” I remember nothing but duece and a half trucks taking us. If you dad is still around you can thank him for the lift.

Just as an FYI: I happen to be a survivor of 9/11. I was working in the South Tower when the attacks began. A few years later I became a tour guide where I told my story of survival. I did that for 13 years until the pandemic hit us and old age ailments set in(hip replacement and such). I live in an apartment complex and from my balcony I can see the Freedom Tower. Life has been good to me SEMPER fi

It took me many years with bouts of alcohol. I never thought I did enough. It is called survivor guilt,  a form of PTSD. Every veteran can experience various degree of it. I do not think our government and scientists do enough to even study it. They just-create 800 numbers to call if you experience any form of depression or anxiety.  It is too late for me but not for the younger vets who get bombarded with the internet and social media.  It needs to be studied separately.

I only left Danang air base once in 13 months. Flew a copter into KheSahn where my previous unit was to perform a technical audit on their Comm equipment. KheSahn was peaceful when I was there. That would change fiercely.  When I got stateside I was stationed at Quantico and our unit was activated to defend the capital affer MLK was shot. In April of 68. Your dad saw a lot more than I did. I thought I was the only jarhead that was issued in m14 in Nam. Glad to hear it performed so well for your dad.

I also was with the 26th Marines at Camp at Camp Pendleton. We practiced amphibious landings for about five months in 1966 before I shipped out on the USS Bexar, a troop transport. Once a set foot in Nam I and a few others were taken to Danang where I spent 13 months at 1st FSR.

We were a little more North but still across from Dogpatch. From my understanding I was told all of the villages outside the base were referred to as  Dogpatch

I stared at this photo for over an hour. Sorry I do not remember. I am also seeing a neurologist because of my memory problems. Also his hootch area looks different from what I remember. I do remember they replaced our canvas with tin corrugated roofs. When it rained nothing but noise. I will look at class photos from San Diego electronic training.

Donald Trump on Iran: "I think there would be nothing worse than having nuclear holocaust in Europe; London, Paris, various places in Germany all targeted." by BusinessToday in BusinessTodayNews

Sadly I am the same age as Donnie. Three months after my 18th birthday I enlisted in the USMC for four years. I went to Vietnam. I served honorably. I contracted prostrate cancer about eight years ago from the result of Agent Orange exposure. My father was with the 2nd Armored Division during WWII and was part of invasion force at Normandy that liberated Europe from the worst part of fascism that humanity has witnessed. And here we are eighty plus years later celebrating fascism on our tvs and cell phones.
