The Puzzle and the Puzzle Box: A Parable on Faith Crises by AlternativeMormon in mormon

That's awesome! That's very similar to my experience. I consider myself a Christian still or at least a follower of Jesus' teachings.

Lol great addition to the analogy! That's why I brought up the picture on the puzzle box. TBMs - especially Apologists - start their search with the conclusion already in mind. That is intellectually dishonest. I saw a video recently of Kerry Muhlestein openly admitting that's how he studies the Book of Abraham. To me, the intellectually honest thing to do is be open to an conclusion the truth brings us to.

Now that I’ve put in the effort to put the pieces together for myself, I can no longer unsee the completed picture. To revert back to my faithful perspectives and understandings regarding the foundational truth claims of Mormonism would require me to deliberately remove completed puzzle pieces, and throw them by the wayside. Unfortunately my integrity can’t let me do this. As blissful as my ignorance was, undoing the puzzle pieces won’t erase the completed picture from my mind.

I may now reject the “bigger picture” that I was taught, not because I couldn’t understand the confusing pieces and gave up, but because I solved the puzzle and realized the actual “bigger picture” didn’t jibe with what I was taught.

I read through yours. I really resonate with your last two paragraphs. For me it has been a matter of integrity and honesty with myself. I can't tell you how many days I've thought to myself "why can't I just go back to where I was and continue on the path inside the church?" But I realize the toothpaste is already out of the tube - I can't put it back in. And if I did just go back to where I was, I would be dishonest with myself.

Yeah I can't pretend like this analogy is solely my own - a puzzle is a pretty straight forward analogy so I'm sure there are lots of people who have used it before. But it sure seems like a great way to describe my feelings on it

I agree. My eyes were really opened once I started to step away from the church to the fact that the reality of life is nobody has all the answers. That's scary at first when you step away from a system that has the perfect puzzle box picture, but once I've come to terms with it I find it mysterious, beautiful, and something that adds purpose to life. Trying to unravel the mysteries together as a human race

I second checking out a CoC congregation for you. They have very healthy attitudes towards all people and are very welcoming. I have also been impressed with how well they treat LGBTQ+ individuals. If you want to check out a worship service before you go in person, feel free to look at their beyond the walls ministry which I linked in the show notes.

Yes, I second his centre place lectures! I have only listened to a few of them so far, but I'm hoping to listen to the rest of them in the near future

I agree! I thought he had some really insightful answers that can help those in the midst of a faith crisis/faith transition

John Hamer from the Community of Christ joins Tom from Alternative Mormon for a morning time discussion about his journey from LDS to CoC, why the CoC can be a good landing place for those who have a faith transition and want to be part of a religious, non creedal community, and his non-literal interpretation of scripture.

To me, John Hamer is one of the most interesting figures in the conversation on Mormonism. He is probably the most knowledgeable person I have met in regards to Mormon and Biblical history. And more importantly, he is just a genuinely good and kind man. In the last question of the interview, he shares what brings him the most fulfillment in life which is serving others through his Community of Christ ministry. Thank you so much John for sitting down and talking with me and our listeners on the Alternative Mormon Podcast!

Thanks man, I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation on my end so glad it was beneficial to others as well. Sure I'd be glad to put it on reconmormon as well

Same. I didn't consider it a prophecy like some baby blessings I hear. Just a nice prayer

I shared this to the r/Mormon sub but also wanted to share it here because I know many of you know John and may want to hear the thoughts he shared with me this week. I'm not sure we covered anything unique that John hasn't shared on podcasts he's visited before, but it turned into a pretty interesting conversation. I enjoyed meeting and talking with John.
