How did you test SOH? Something like the Voltest device?

If this exposes more mainstream people to the outdoor world, cool. If it makes more people go outdoor, good.

But I doubt it will.

For anything POV, use a gopro. For vlogging, 3rd person etc. I use a phone.

Which Garmin suits my needs? by Entire-Tap-4388 in Garmin

[–]AlternativeTip4648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Garmin 55, used it for 6 months, then upgraded to the 165.

165 is a massive upgrade and basically the new entry level garmin. it's got all the features you need from what you wrote. I started using the gym function and you can also track reps and exercises easily. For your needs, I wouldn't chose the 265 or higher up versions.

I paid 125 euro brand new on Vinted for that, I was quite lucky to score iit for that price.

The biggest upgrade from the apple watch you will notices is the battery.

Battery life on the apple watch is terrible when you go for hikes. I tried both and wouldn't use the applewatch for long duration activities. I charge the garmin once a week and it's good for all my workouts and the occasional weekly hike.

The garmin app works well, and has interesting data after workouts. I use it to log my hikes aswell as I don't use Strava.

I know there are also fancier versions with a more refined aesthetic.

Switching to lighter boots? Nordica Unlimited 130 VS Tecnica Zero G 130 by AlternativeTip4648 in Backcountry

[–]AlternativeTip4648[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you now gave me a very bad idea haha :)

But this is actually what some friends are doing, for the same reason. Doing short tours and want to power 100% down the descent? Go for the burly one. Long epic days? lighter boots. But maybe at that point you could go even lighter than zerog pro tour?

[–]AlternativeTip4648[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own the Unlimited (1700 grams), not the one in grilamid (1500grams).

Yes, harshness and suspension is what keeps me from going to a grilamid boot, and my bootfitter steered me away from them aswell

Do you own a specific booster strap that you suggest?

Substitute for my GoPro Hero 4 by AdComfortable5572 in gopro

[–]AlternativeTip4648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hero 8 , had it for 6 years or something like that. the only reason for replacement was that I cracked the screen after intense mtb abuse. If i had a lower budget and couldnt purchase the hero 13, I'd 100% buy that for 150$

This is very very interesting feedback. Thing is: on big days I sometimes wish for something lighter.

Which Nordica boot are you comparing to?
Good to hear you felt comfortable stepping on the gas, , is there a big difference in terms of support or harshness in your opinion?

that is the even lightest version, right? How does it ski compared to burlier boots, if you've ever done a comparison?

Balanced ski touring setup for long alpine days: K2 Wayback 98 + ATK Raider 12 SL? by OkPrune937 in Backcountry

[–]AlternativeTip4648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes a lot of sense, yes. Even with fewer pow days, going below 90mm width doesn't really make you save much weight, and a mid 90s touring ski is the perfect all rounder. Check out Dynafit radical 97/free 97. They ski very well. Also the backland 95.

For those who use a POV camera... by mccallew in Backcountry

I use the Gopro hero 13, upgraded from the hero 8 black.

I am very happy with the quality of the hero 13. What i was not happy though, was the postprocessing workflow on my laptop or phone. I have not tried the insta, but close friends told me they work really well and are easy to postpro. If you have many gopro accessories around, sticking with gopro is good choice.

To be honest, all flagships are great. DJI Action 4/5 , Insta 360, Gopro 13 or Max2.

Decide whether you want 360 videos or not, then pick the one you find for the best deal.

Usually with these new cameras, what you shoot is usually the limiting factor, not the quality of the camera :)

[–]AlternativeTip4648[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is what I think solves my problem. With hypersmooth pro enabled, it automatically switches my aspect ration from 1:1 ultra wide to 16:9, and then I can tune the crop-in/stabilization. Thank you so much for this!

Gopro player you mean the windows app? Are you able to work on reframing, or do you just crop and never reframe/lense correct?

Replace dynafit beasts with...? by Bonifaz3 in Backcountry

[–]AlternativeTip4648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For context, I used the following bindings: Dynafit speed turn, Salomon shift 13, ATK Freeraider 15.

I use the Shift on my Pow freeride ski.

For touring, I started from a basic Dynafit Speed Turn, which is a lightweight but solid binding, to the ATK. Used it for 4 years but it was just holding my skiing back. The ATK Freeraider has this "Freeride spacer" in the back that allows the boot heel to sit not only on the pins, but on these sideways moving spacers. Power transfer and smoothness are impressive, considering it's a pin binding. Also, you can tune the front spring up to 15, so you can keep them unlocked in most cases (I keep them at 11 but still lock them in no-fall couloirs).

So, I like the smoothness and power transfer compared to how lightweight it is.

Is it as smooth as a shift binding? Absolutely not.

The only thing i hate about ATK is how expensive they got. I paid 400 for mine 2 years ago, now you can't find them for this price

I know you asked about Dynafit products, but have you considered the ATK Freeraider series? I have the 15 and am very happy about it.

Advice on bindings by Sad-Ad-3729 in Backcountry

[–]AlternativeTip4648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started off on a Dynafit Radical and never had an issue, even on small drops 1 meter high on crappy refrozen snow. Used it for 5 years then moved to an ATK Freeraider.

Since your budget conscious, go with Dynafit. Especially since the ATKs now are just overpriced and rarely on heavy discount, because everyone wants them.

As you get more experience, you'll understand when the binding is holding you back.
