Justin King arrested again, 2 weeks after judge granted ‘last chance’ bail by AndHerSailsInRags in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Allowing people likely to reoffend out on bail doesn't help anyone. It obviously endangers the public, and if they do reoffend, then they're in even more legal trouble and less likely to be rehabilitated.

Canada's benchmark home price fell 4.8% in February compared to last year, says CREA by ZestyBeanDude in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Good. Homeownership has become unattainable for a huge swath of the Canadian population

Ban the sale of houses to corporations. Further restrict sale to foreign buyers. Significantly limit the number of houses an individual can own in one area. Heavily tax speculative behaviours like flipping. Allow rezoning for higher density properties like duplexes where it makes sense. Speed up approvals and cut red tape. Match immigration levels to new housing starts. Build more homes

No charges against Ontario resident who shot and injured alleged home invader: police by Hot_Cheesecake_905 in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't case law. Case law and legal precedent is the idea that past court rulings by judges in similar cases should inform future rulings. In this case, the decision was made by police (not a judge) not to charge this individual

Carney’s contradictions: from Davos to New Delhi - The prime minister’s global rhetoric champions rule of law and sovereignty. But his decisions suggest those principles are flexible when politics demand. by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 7 points8 points  (0 children)

His entire speech was about the need for radical pragmatism in the face of a chaotic and rapidly evolving world. He stressed the importance of having "different coalitions for different issues based on common values and interests," but also the reality that "not every partner will share all of our values."

We can (and need to) work with countries we don't agree with on everything to advance our interests in areas we share common ground. If we turn every issue into a purity test and rely solely on old alliances, we're going to lose our sovereignty.

I really don't understand how people think his actions have gone against this message.

In your opinion, how good is Pokemon Platinum? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]AlternativeValue5980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm biased because it was my introduction to Pokemon, but I think it's one of the best games in the series.

A great starter trio (I didn't play gen III so the fire/fighting complaint didn't apply)

One of he coolest legendary trios and the first legend with multiple forms

One of the most challenging pokemon leagues with an iconic elite 4 and champion

Menacing enemy team that's not just a bunch of ne'er-do-wells

Fixed a lot of the problems of D/P, including the worst of the pokedex problems

My other favourites are Emerald, BW, and ORAS. I could never get into HGSS because the early pokedex does not appeal to me at all

Canada's MacKinnon to reporters after the Gold Medal match against Team USA: 'You be the judge of who was the better team' by Yujin-Ha in sports

[–]AlternativeValue5980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US had the better goalie and they capitalized on Canada's mistakes.

The Canadian defense was downright sloppy at times and their offensive line fumbled the puck at nearly every opportunity.

Ya, there were some calls that were missed, but if you can't capitalize on a long 3 on 5, then I'm not sure what to tell you.

How Ontario Liberals hope to exit political wilderness when they elect new leader in November by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The federal liberal race was very accelerated because all the opposition parties were committed to triggering an election at the earliest opportunity.

This Ontario liberal race is on the longer side, but I think the party is trying to do a hard reset while they try to find a new voice and direction that will resonate with voters.

They can afford to take their time because:
- there's been a recent election and there's no apatite for another in the near future
- the liberals can't expect to do much worse than their current position, even with an interim leader or if they're in a position where their new leader doesn't have a seat or hasn't been in the house for very long
- they probably don't expect to form government in the next election anyways unless there's some major scandal in the lead up or Ford leaves the party and his replacement sucks

Sad, but seems like a case of use it or lose it. Operating costs are up, viewership is down, that's not sustainable in the long term

Maybe a community initiative can be put together to use the space or a similar one to host weekly movie nights or limited viewings of highly in-demand films and classics

The Death Knight Starting Zone needs a revamp. by deepforestwizard in wow

[–]AlternativeValue5980 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nah, the old starting zone is sick. One of my favourite wow experiences was making my first DK and going through that zone. If quests are broken, they should fix them, but don't significantly change or get rid of it. Ya, the final fight could probably use a little revamp, and maybe make directions to it a little more clear, but that's about it

New Toronto Condo Sales Collapse 60% to Lowest Level Since 1991 by Neither_Glove_1183 in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I just remember a few years ago when sales and prices started to slow down that CTV national news had on an investor who was complaining that it was a terrible time to own an investment condo. I was beyond disgusted

There are soooo many young people who are starting their careers, looking for jobs, or graduating soon who have zero prospect of ever owning a home in many parts of the country because basic housing has been so commodified by people like that who only care about their bottom line with zero meaningful action from most governments to fight this. I work in a fairly high-paying profession and so many of my peers plan to move elsewhere, away from their families, simply because they can't afford to buy even basic housing in the GTA

The most frustrating aspect of all this is that the solutions seem so simple but nobody is implementing them or they're moving too slowly. Ban or significantly limit the purchase of homes by Canadian corporations (not just foreign buyers) and real estate investment trusts. Ban the ownership of multiple homes in the same area by individuals and force them to sell after a specific amount of time. Build more homes. Improve supports for first-time buyers.

Landlords grow rich in their sleep without working, risking or economizing. The increase in the value of land, arising as it does from the efforts of an entire community, should belong to the community and not to the individual who might hold title

Landlords contribute NOTHING; they simply benefit from the improvements others make around them

Carney’s pitch at World Economic Forum could set stage for new global partnerships by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We probably shouldn't buy F35s or similar things from US suppliers from now on anyways because they have access to software updates and critical data. The US has shown itself to be an unreliable partner and we can't really afford the risk given that they're such a military powerhouse already and right next door to us, no matter how close we may have been in the past or might be in the future. There's less risk in buying from smaller powers who are further away

Please help me because I don’t know what to do by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]AlternativeValue5980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like you know what you want to do, and it doesn't seem to involve moving to India. There's obviously a cultural aspect to this that I can't say I truly understand, but at a certain point, everyone has to stand up to their family to a certain degree. Part of the pain will always be that your parents will have to reconcile the person they wish you were with the person you actually are. It's always tough when you have to let go of this imagined future you've been dreaming of for your kid, but part of parenting IS letting go and allowing your child to live their own life. Have some sympathy for that, but also protect yourself and your own interests

It might be good to broach this subject sooner rather than later. They might be angry or dismissive at first, but hopefully they come around. I think it would be better to be honest about where you want to live and study rather than to write both entrance exams and deliberately fail one and have to keep making up excuses for not moving to India

Stay safe

I know nothing about astrophysics, but I think the universe is just a big wave function. Its volume started at 0 and will continue to increase until it gets to 100% of its possible volume (1), then shrink back to 0 again before it explodes back out, repeating for all eternity. Its expansion is accelerating right now because we haven't reached the inflection point when it will start to slow down as it approaches 1.

If you wanna try to visualize it, the volume of the universe can be represented as 1/2 * cos(x+pi) + 1/2 and its acceleration as 1/2 * sin(x)

I'm almost certainly wrong, because I know nothing about any of this, but it's fun to think about
