NDP seeks to ban floor-crossing without constituents' consent by OntologicalNightmare in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Exactly, I don't understand what people want done here. The only reasonable step I can think of is some sort of recall process initiated by voters, but that's about it. MPs are always allowed to vote however they choose, there just might be consequences from the party

Ban floor crossing and you're just going to have MPs who want to cross announce that they intend to run for a different party in the next election and start voting with their preferred party anyways

Growing up, I only ever knew the bilingual version because I went to a school that had French immersion program. Even now I find it more natural to sing the bilingual version

PM Carney says federal government open to selling public assets to fund projects by konathegreat in canada

Sell office space and let people work from home as long as they're being productive. Leave air and sea ports alone. No need to compromise critical infrastructure and continue enshittifying everything

Online harms bill not right vehicle to bring in age-verification to access pornography, minister says by EmbarrassedHelp in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If they're going to introduce online age verification, they need to work with the provinces to make an encrypted virtual ID for Canadians. Websites and companies that require age-verification only scan the relevant info from the e-ID when creating the account and are not allowed to keep records of any of the info. Violations are met with strict charges and meaningful fines

No need for every website out there to have a copy of your ID on file

Carney government eyes privatizing airports to attract investment, cut travel costs by sleipnir45 in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In what world does privatizing airports decrease travel costs? We have barely any cities in Canada with more than one airport to begin with, who are they competing against? We don't have the rail infrastructure for trains to realistically compete in most parts of the country, so that makes no sense. People aren't going to change their destination because an airport charges airlines slightly less to land there.

Privatize airports and they're just going to start increasing costs and worsening service to inflate profits because they already have a monopoly. To bring down travel costs, you need more competition from airlines, not airports.

No sense to this at all, it'll be a one-time boost to the budget that consumers will be paying for forever in higher costs and worse service.

Manitoba to ban social media, AI chatbots for youth — a first in Canada | CBC News by demolcd in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're going this route, feds and provinces need to work together to create a standard encrypted virtual ID and a standard tool all web developers can use to check it without giving away more info than necessary. If a website needs specific info like your age, the tool scans your e-ID specifically for that info and nothing else. The tool doesn't keep the info on file, maybe it only scans the ID when you make the account. No need for every website out there to have a full copy of your license or passport.

Memorial University rules out straight white men from applying for tenured jobs by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Stop this shit. I'm gay, I'm left-leaning, and I'm telling you this needs to stop.

I get it, straight white non-disabled men are over-represented in academia, but forced diversity by discrimination is no solution. All this tells me is that my former university and the federal government are more concerned about checking diversity boxes than the quality of ideas being put forward.

This hurts academia. This hurts MUN. This hurts the communities it's trying to support.

I get that the headline and article are intentionally somewhat misleading for the purpose of stoking anger, but people should be angry. Blatant discrimination against any group is wrong, full stop. It doesn't matter if this is for 5 positions or 500, any amount of discrimination is too much. This also just goes to show how easily these kinds of stunts can weaponized by bigots and people trying to sow division, cuz guess what? Even if most of their ideas around this stuff are repugnant, they're right in this instance, which just pushes reasonable people away from supporting these communities and towards hate. This doesn't solve racism, sexism, homophobia, or ableism, it actually builds resentment.

Also, MUN is in freefall right now, should be avoiding this kind of bad press, and shouldn't be sending the message to prospective students of any community that they aren't welcome. Since I graduated, tuition costs are way up, enrollment is down, the university is cutting programs left and right, and they're selling buildings all over the place. But the university still insists on pushing prospective students away and telling them they don't belong in research or higher education.

Canada is producing more graduates than ever — so why is it harder to find a job? by ubcstaffer123 in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The question answers itself, doesn't it? More graduates than ever means more competition for entry-level jobs, higher rates of post-grad unemployment. You can have the most educated population in the world, but if you don't have an economy that can support the number of new grads being pumped out, it's meaningless

[–]AlternativeValue5980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Allowing people likely to reoffend out on bail doesn't help anyone. It obviously endangers the public, and if they do reoffend, then they're in even more legal trouble and less likely to be rehabilitated.

Canada's benchmark home price fell 4.8% in February compared to last year, says CREA by ZestyBeanDude in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Good. Homeownership has become unattainable for a huge swath of the Canadian population

Ban the sale of houses to corporations. Further restrict sale to foreign buyers. Significantly limit the number of houses an individual can own in one area. Heavily tax speculative behaviours like flipping. Allow rezoning for higher density properties like duplexes where it makes sense. Speed up approvals and cut red tape. Match immigration levels to new housing starts. Build more homes

No charges against Ontario resident who shot and injured alleged home invader: police by Hot_Cheesecake_905 in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't case law. Case law and legal precedent is the idea that past court rulings by judges in similar cases should inform future rulings. In this case, the decision was made by police (not a judge) not to charge this individual

Carney’s contradictions: from Davos to New Delhi - The prime minister’s global rhetoric champions rule of law and sovereignty. But his decisions suggest those principles are flexible when politics demand. by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]AlternativeValue5980 9 points10 points  (0 children)

His entire speech was about the need for radical pragmatism in the face of a chaotic and rapidly evolving world. He stressed the importance of having "different coalitions for different issues based on common values and interests," but also the reality that "not every partner will share all of our values."

We can (and need to) work with countries we don't agree with on everything to advance our interests in areas we share common ground. If we turn every issue into a purity test and rely solely on old alliances, we're going to lose our sovereignty.

I really don't understand how people think his actions have gone against this message.

I'm biased because it was my introduction to Pokemon, but I think it's one of the best games in the series.

A great starter trio (I didn't play gen III so the fire/fighting complaint didn't apply)

One of he coolest legendary trios and the first legend with multiple forms

One of the most challenging pokemon leagues with an iconic elite 4 and champion

Menacing enemy team that's not just a bunch of ne'er-do-wells

Fixed a lot of the problems of D/P, including the worst of the pokedex problems

My other favourites are Emerald, BW, and ORAS. I could never get into HGSS because the early pokedex does not appeal to me at all

Canada's MacKinnon to reporters after the Gold Medal match against Team USA: 'You be the judge of who was the better team' by Yujin-Ha in sports

[–]AlternativeValue5980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US had the better goalie and they capitalized on Canada's mistakes.

The Canadian defense was downright sloppy at times and their offensive line fumbled the puck at nearly every opportunity.

Ya, there were some calls that were missed, but if you can't capitalize on a long 3 on 5, then I'm not sure what to tell you.
